Ocean Front Cliff House

Bedrooms 1
Space 92 m²
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

About the property

Oceanfront 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom

We are renting our Ohana (i.e. guesthouse). It is attached to our home, but doesn't have any shared walls. It is separated from our home by a breezeway and lanai. It has a private entrance and covered parking. The Ohana is approximately 1000 square feet which includes: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living/dining space and kitchenette, but the best part is the view!

The property is conveniently located with a private driveway and gate directly off Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 19). The home is surrounded by 3 acres of tropical flora with no other home in sight. Extremely private, yet easy to find and located 13 miles from historic downtown Hilo and 15 miles from the Hilo Airport.

About Sandy & Bob Nutt

We are originally from California, but have always had a love for Hawaii. I spent childhood vacations visiting my grandfather in Maui and we've been coming to the Big Island to visit my father since he retired here in 2000. My husband and I are both serving in the US Navy.

Sandy & Bob Nutt purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Sandy & Bob Nutt chose Hakalau

For us, it was all about the view. We love waking up to beautiful sunrises over the water and seeing waves crash along the rugged coastline. We hope you will come stay and fall in love with it like we have!

What makes this cottage unique

Our managers, Sandy & Bob are very attentive if you need anything during your stay.

Great Place in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We spent three nights at the Cliff House during the last week in September 2017. We have been to Hawaii many times, and stayed in great places, but the Cliff House tops them all. The location is perfect, high on a cliff overlooking the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by lush green vegetation. The house itself is modern, spacious, with all of the amenities you may want, located on a large lot, away from neighbors. There is no light pollution, so the night sky is spectacular. We loved our stay!

Owner's Response: You are so right about the amazing night sky. With zero to low light pollution, the visibility is incredible especially to watch meteor showers, just spectacular. We too kept coming back to Hawaii until we moved here. We do hope you get to come back again to enjoy our beautiful ocean views and stroll once more through the property. Aloha and A Hui Hoa (until we meet again)

Private house and well appointed.

Owner's Response: We're glad you enjoyed the privacy that the property and cottage offer. Mahalo for sharing with us as to why you only gave us 4 stars, which was due to the rain. We know that rain can change activity plans but it also keeps everything lush and green along with making the waterfalls magnificent. We hope you both enjoyed celebrating your birthdays on the island. Aloha and Mahalo

Our Second Stay at the Cliff House

  • 5 of 5

We were thrilled to return to the Big Island and the Cliff House after several years. We rose each morning between 5am and 6am to see the sunrise over the water. What an amazing way to start each day. And it is the perfect spot for yoga and meditation!

At night we looked up at the stars...and enjoyed the roar of the water and sounds of the coquis.

We enjoyed many special treats on the Hilo side...the farmers market with delicious rampertab, passion fruit and papaya...a delicious meal at Moon & afternoon at the Tropical Botanical Garden..and walk around Akaka Falls.

We also journeyed to the Kona side with stops at Hapuna Beach...Holualoa to see art and friends and more.

Such a delight to enjoy the beauty of the Cliff House. Thank you Sandy and Bob!

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to have you back and to see that you had such an amazing time again. We too get up early for the same reason, you must be turning into a local, haha. It seems like no matter how many times you come to the island, there is always more to discover or do over again. We hope to see again in the future. Aloha and Mahalo

Peaceful ,beautiful ocean cottage.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved this quiet ,beautiful retreat from busy city life.

We had great sunrises in the mornings, and the full moon and stars, after dark. We saw whales close by. So pretty,

It’s close to botanical garden ,Hilo and all kinds of very interesting island life.

Owner's Response: That sounds like song lyrics, 'I have the sun in the morning and the moon at night'. It's always so special when we get to see the whales, especially the young ones leaping into the air. We hope you took home some great photos. Aloha and Mahalo

Great way to end our visit

  • 5 of 5

Quiet, except for occasional pounding surf, which was great.

Comfortable, and easy travel to Hilo, Moana Kea and points north.

Owner's Response: That's cool, literally that you went to the top of Mauna Kea, there's still snow up there. We're glad you you enjoyed your stay, location and that you were found everything to be comfortable. We hope you get to come back again some day. Aloha and Mahalo

I reviewed some of our favorite local attractions on gogobot so you can check those out and you can see what other people are saying about them. Locally, I think the little town of Honomu, and Akaka falls are must sees (located approximately 2 miles from our house). If you want to do something adventurous try ziplining (we recommend Skyline Akaka Falls - also located in Honomu). Downtown Hilo is 13 miles away and has plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, museums, and other outdoor activities. The nearest airport is 15 miles away, also in Hilo.
