About Sandy & Bob Nutt
We are originally from California, but have always had a love for Hawaii. I spent childhood vacations visiting my grandfather in Maui and we've been coming to the Big Island to visit my father since he retired here in 2000. My husband and I are both serving in the US Navy.
Sandy & Bob Nutt purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Sandy & Bob Nutt chose Hakalau
For us, it was all about the view. We love waking up to beautiful sunrises over the water and seeing waves crash along the rugged coastline. We hope you will come stay and fall in love with it like we have!

Very peaceful and beautiful
We were very pleased with our stay at the Cliff house!
Our manager Sandi was the best! If we had any questions she was always there to help us .
Great place to escape to
Best location for disappearing from the world. Lots of interesting places close by. See the general store in Papa aloa for the best local meets and nice locale by the sea. Music and great food and local beers on tap. The only thing we noticed was the lack of water pressure for the shower and a relatively uncomfortable bed (too firm for our liking) otherwise the property is a great place to hang out and just enjoy the slow island pace and wonderful ocean views. If you want to unwind and forget the rest of the world and your own problems then here you go.
We too have enjoyed the food at the Papa'aloa General Store. There's also a new pizza place just a few minutes down the road in Honomu. With more cruise ships passing by this time of year, it makes the ocean viewing even more interesting. I will look into the water pressure problem as I thought we had taken care of that. Aloha and Mahalo
Ocean Front Cliff House, Indeed!
It's a stunning property, with the ocean cliff view, spacious lawn with fruit trees, a well-kept guest house, and no hint of neighbors. The big two-sided living room window faces the sunrise. The stars in the sky are spectacular, partly since this is 15-minutes away from town and the island regulates light pollution.
Constructive feedback: For the driveway gate, a key-lock would be better than fumbling with the combination in the dark.
We're so glad you enjoyed the property while celebrating your 10th anniversary. Yes, star gazing in the yard is spectacular with the pitch black sky at night. On top of Mauna Kea are telescopes that are used by many countries to study the heavens. The light pollution is keep down, plus the island uses special lighting on the streets to aid the telescopes. It's quite amazing if you ever get a chance to go to the top of the mountain. The reason we use a combination lock is so that you can arrive at any time that's convenient for you without having to meet up with me first to get a key. We hope you took home some sweet memories. Aloha and Mahalo
Everything is just as advertised
Quiet with just the sound of waves and maybe a few passing vehicles.
Close (but not too close) to Hilo, dining, gardens and activities.
Perfect for two adults that want to decompress.
Having some time to relax and listen to the ocean is something we all need to do, so we're glad that you were able to do that. Please come back any time. Aloha and Mahalo.
This was our second time at this property and it was as lovely as ever. The sunrise and large yard with lots of area to explore make it a great place for our base of operations while on the Big Island..
It's always a pleasure to have you back again. We're so glad that you enjoyed the property just as much as the first time. Hawaii is addictive with all it's beauty so we hope you get to come back again. Aloha and Mahalo
Beautiful and peaceful
We loved our stay at the beautiful and peaceful Cliff House! We had 9 days to explore the east side of the island. The Waipi’o Valley (from the overlook) was grand, the ocean at Laupahoehoe Point was wild, Akaka Falls, Rainbow falls, and (our favorite) Hawai’I Tropical Botanical Gardens were awesome, Hilo has some good food, and Punalu’u (Black Sand Beach) was invigoratingly windy with regal resting sea turtles. It was always special to come back to our Cliff House refuge. We loved the daily tropical showers, the sounds of birds, frogs, and the ocean at night, as well as the cool breeze. Sunrises and sunsets were very pretty. We gave ourselves plenty of relax time, just to read, watch the ocean, and enjoy a peaceful spot. Good Memories!
It was certainly a pleasure to host you both as you celebrated your 21st anniversary. It sounds like you got to see quite a lot of the island and went to many of our favorite places. There's so much to see and do here, that's why it's called the Big Island. lol Enjoy your wonderful memories you made and we hope that you get to come back again some time. Aloha and Mahalo
I reviewed some of our favorite local attractions on gogobot so you can check those out and you can see what other people are saying about them. Locally, I think the little town of Honomu, and Akaka falls are must sees (located approximately 2 miles from our house). If you want to do something adventurous try zip-lining . Downtown Hilo is 13 miles away and has plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, museums, and other outdoor activities. The nearest airport is 15 miles away, also in Hilo.
