About Flor, John Ecklund and Martha

John and Martha and Flor manage the amazing Finca Ogawa where my wife and I have built two great cottages - Cuccina and Alma. Read Raman Voorhis' FO review and you will get it.

Why Flor, John Ecklund and Martha chose Cuyo

Last February my girlfriend and I spent a weekend at Finca Ogawa. We had just spent several weeks travelling in Salta, living like gauchos, and we were in dire need of some R & R. Once we arrived in Valle de Uco, we hopped a cab that sped us towards our destination as fast as an old car can go down dirt roads. A few missed turns and course corrections later, we found ourselves strolling down a fruit-tree lined lane with grape-laden vineyards stretching across the fields before us. We had arrived at Finca Ogawa, and my word it was gorgeous. A farmhouse is situation in the middle of the property that doubles as reception and winery. John, a wonderful man and proprietor of Finca Ogawa, met us here to give the lay of the land and the keys to our dream that was the next few days. Casa Cuccina.

We spent our afternoon walking the property, picking peaches and apples from the trees as we went, drinking wine that came straight from the vineyards surrounding us, and in general relaxing in our comfy home. After an amazing, hot shower we took a walk down the road to the community that lives a half mile from FO to rustle up something for dinner. With a full chef’s kitchen at our disposal we decided to make some pasta primavera and a lemon-glazed chicken for dinner. We had already picked our full of herbs, tomatoes, squashes, and zucchinis from the gardens and only lacked a chicken and spaghetti. The husband and wife run market in “town” had everything we needed, but the chicken wouldn’t be slaughtered till later so I had to come back for that. Another great bottle of FO wine and the sun setting on the mountain peaks truly made this an evening I will never forget. Oh, the garden grown dinner was delicious too. Raman & Lauren

After a great nights sleep on the best bed I’d seen in my travels of Argentina, I got up early to grab some eggs from the chicken cages, more tomatoes and herbs from the garden, and a basket full of raspberries from the berry patch to ma

Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 5 nights in Casa Alama and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We loved being able to cook for ourselves, in the well equipped kitchen and on the wood fired BBQ. Fresh eggs daily pick your own vegetables and raspberries and an honour system wine store. Does it get any better than that? We picked apples and cooked them with plums and local honey, and fed all of our compost to the chickens. The friendly Greyhound dog made frequent visits; it loved to come to "our house" for a snooze in the sun. John and Martha were perfect hosts, giving advise on wineries to visit, John said "just tell them you are staying at Finca Ogawa and they will open the doors for a tour" and it worked. They are we known and liked in the area. Morning views of the snow capped Andes from the porch were hard to beat. We are already planning a return trip and will stay a week next time.

Casa Alma

  • 5 of 5

I could easily spend a month here! Of all the places I have visited, this is the first place I have said that about. We had spent a week in BA and only five days here. Wish we had spent less time in BA and more time here. The place is amazing. The houses are unbelievable. We had a difficult time finding the place. It was night and raining. The signs need to be updated because they are fading or covered with branches. There was no one there to meet us, which was a bit upsetting. The owners did arrive shortly after we did. They were friendly and it was a very nice touch to be given a bottle of their wine. They had Tito show us to our place and said they would be around the next day. The beds are fantastic. We did have a small leak in the roof and we lost power a couple of times but they don't usually have rain like we had, so I assume this was a rare occurrence. I do suggest they supply candles or flashlights just in case. The kitchen was beautiful and well supplied. They even had staples there for us, such as coffee, sugar, cereal, salt and pepper. I would suggest supplying ovenmitts and instructions on how to use the oven itself. We did miss having a toaster but we improvised with a small grate we found and used this over the gas element. The oven was difficult to use because we had never seen one like it before. It only had one element on top but seemed to cook very quickly. Instructions would have been very helpful. We would have appreciated having someone available to answer our questions. We did not see the owners the next day. We did get to chat with John briefly the following day and he suggested a restaurant for us to try. Casa de Uco. It was truly a fantastic dinner. Thanks John. We were able to try our hand at our own asado because each Casa has their own BBQ. The weather cleared and we woke up to the snow topped Andes right outside our door. Breath taking! They have a Cantina with many delightful treats available. They make their own jams from the fruit on the property. We were given instructions to a little grocery store very close to the Finca. They had everything anyone would need. We had to leave very early in the morning to catch our flight and we could not find anyone to give our keys to. The Cantina that is usually open was locked up. Wished we were given check out instructions. Few complaints. Hope to go back soon. Loved our stay!

Weekend Relaxation -- a review by Raman Voorhis

  • 5 of 5

Visit to La Cuccina

Last February I spent a weekend at La Cuccina with my girlfriend; we had a fabulous time. The properties surrounding the house are a magnificent collection of vineyards, orchards, and open fields. However, the house itself is what truly made our stay fantastic.

The awesome, downy beds were the best I’d slept on while travelling in Argentina for six months. The showers had great pressure and very hot water. None the less, our favorite part of the house was the open main room with a chef’s kitchen on one side and a covered patio that looks out on the snow covered peaks of the Andes on the other side. Complementary wines from the host and access to his vast gardens, orchards, and fresh eggs made everything all the better. I haven’t felt as relaxed on vacation as I did at La Cuccina in as long as I can remember. I just might not leave next time I stay at La Cuccina!

Best regards,

Raman
