Rustic Beauty On Quiet Pond: 3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 5

Ideal spot for couples, families and friends to escape from the buzz of civilization and just relax in the private, wooded setting or experience a whole host of area activities and sites that are just a short ride away. After visiting our cottage, we think you'll want to make it an annual vacation destination.

Summer guests may enjoy swimming, fishing, canoeing and frog catching in the quiet, trout stocked pond. In the fall, you'll find a dazzling display of fall foliage and plenty of festivals and community activities. Winter skiers and outdoor enthusiasts - bring your ice skates, skis, snowboards. Pat's Peak is only 5 miles away and many other ski areas are just a short drive.

The rustic beauty of our getaway on French Pond has a peaceful ambiance and relaxing charm, but offers easy access to many area sites and activities.

Here is an email we received from a previous guest...

'Our time at the pond was heavenly and provided a rest that we all really needed. Thank you for giving our family such a beautiful place to unwind and reconnect. My husband had been hesitant to leave his busy practice but after a couple of days realized he was in the exact right spot.'

Less than 1.5 hours from Boston, Henniker is a charming college town nestled along the Contoocook River with it's own covered bridge right at the village center. As you familiarize yourself with Henniker, you'll be delighted by the warm, small town atmosphere. Explore the quaint eateries, the century old pharmacy/toy shop or grab a bite at Intervale Farm Pancake House & Ice Cream Stand. In the colder months, you can enjoy winter fun at Pat's Peak Ski Resort just 5 miles from your doorstep!

Entering the cottage, guests are greeted by floor-to-ceiling windows providing a panoramic view of the pond. The rustic entryway features the cabin's original hearth (decorative only), vaulted ceilings and a bookcase filled with games, books and DVDs.

Off the entryway, there is a full bath with shower. Moving into the cottage, the entrance opens up to a Great Room with open concept. The living room, furnished with a comfy overstuffed couch and chair, features a TV, stereo and BluRay/DVD player.

Facing the pond is a bright and airy sun-room with wicker couch, chair and settee. The sun-room flows into the fully equipped kitchen with an expandable dining table (seats 8), refrigerator, stove, microwave, and coffeemaker.

An oversized deck extends the entire length of the cottage with a large staircase which leads to the small, private beach area and dock. Below the deck are a canoe and paddle boat for guest use.

Master Bedroom (sleeps 2):

Queen bed, water view, attached 1/2 bath, walkout to deck, ceiling fan, TV/DVD player, closet and antique dressing table.

About Linda Thomson

Although my family is currently living in Pittsburgh, we are originally from New England where we have a very large extended family. We love the peace and quiet of mornings spent on the deck of our New Hampshire cottage watching the wildlife and listening to the sounds of nature. Every summer we have a big BBQ and fireworks display on French Pond to share our favorite spot with family and friends. We have also spent many winter vacations skiing (the boys prefer snowboarding) at Pat's Peak and ice skating on the pond. We travel back home as often as possible; but unfortunately we don't get back often enough which is why we've decided to share our cottage experience with others. It's such a great place to create truly special memories - I know you're going to love it!

Linda Thomson purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Linda Thomson chose Merrimack Valley

Less than 1.5 hours from our home in Massachusetts, the cottage was a perfect spot for our family to get away from our daily routines and reconnect. We fell in love with the rustic beauty of the cottage and the picturesque pond. It immediately struck us as a great family vacation home.

Henniker is a charming college town nestled along the Contoocook River with it's own covered bridge right at the village center. We love the warm, small town atmosphere including the century old pharmacy/toy shop and the small businesses where you'll find the owners behind the counters. Being a family of skiers and snowboarders, it's an added bonus to have Pat's Peak Ski Resort just 5 miles from our doorstep.

We fell in love with the cottage and the town and have been blessed with some wonderful family memories of our vacations on French Pond.

What makes this cabin unique

When you first walk into the cottage, you're greeted with a panoramic view of the water and woods. You're struck by the beauty of your surroundings. It's so relaxing to sit and listen to the call of the loons or soak up the brilliant colors of the fall foliage as you sip your morning coffee on the expansive deck overlooking the water. The pond offers a lot of activities from fishing and swimming, to canoeing or simply bird watching. The rustic beauty of our getaway on French Pond has a peaceful ambiance and relaxing charm, but it also offers easy access to many area sites and activities.

Henniker is a great place to relax and get away from it all or enjoy an action filled vacation. Stroll the streets or trails along the river, enjoy a summer concert on the green or spend an afternoon playing golf, take a hike through the lush trails or ski one of the area mountains. There is a lot to see and do around Henniker. Its central location makes it a great place to use as your home base while you explore New Hampshire.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Wow! What a fantastic place. I lived in New Hampshire for four years and truly miss it. The cabin was the perfect place to stay while visiting friends. Thank you so much for sharing your home with my family.

New Hampshire's state capital is less than 15 miles away with interesting shops, eateries and site-seeing. Shopping: Main street has a few cute shops and a rather large quilting store. Large retailers (Walmart, Target, BestBuy) can be found in Concord along with a shopping mall and movie theater. Outlet shopping is less than 40 minutes away in Tilton, NH.

Restaurants: Intervale Farm Pancake House is a favorite stop for Sat or Sun breakfast. Housemade maple syrup is available to take home. Daniel's Restaurant and Pub, located right on the Contoocook River, offers a nice selection of entrees and an extensive cocktail menu. For a very casual meal, St. George's Cafe is a great sandwich stop.

Loved our stay

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time on French Pond. The view was amazing coming from the all glass front. Loved the fire pit at night! A nice quiet get-a-way.

Would stay here again.

French's Pond Cottage

  • 3 of 5

We loved our stay in NH, however; the cottage needs to have some updates. Lighting seemed to be an issue for some of us older guests, as did the low to the floor toilets. The amount of space is adequate but flooring improvements would be beneficial. The furniture and bedding were excellent! The view of the pond could not be better! We would recommend this cottage to those who are "totally" outdoorsmen, but not so much to those who prefer the city.

Great Cabin, a little more attention to detail would be appreciated

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is extremely well located on a very quiet pond yet is only 20 minutes from the shops and restaurants of downtown Concord. The cabin's grounds give a very secluded feel, you can barely see the neighboring cottages and you are surrounded by woods. It has sandy entrance to the lake so it's perfect for little kids but the dock/raft is in deep enough water (5.5 feet) that bigger kids can jump off - lots of fun. Paddle boat, canoe, and kayak, great stuff. The Cabin itself is very charming, it has a great rustic feel with knotty pine everywhere. Absolutely gorgeous views of the lake and lots of natural light through the floor to ceiling picture windows. It is small though, there is not a lot of room for clothes, dishes and the like.

I do the think there could be more attention to detail. When we arrived, neither grill had been cleaned. I cleaned the gas grill before my first use and the grease pan spilled out on the deck, YUCK! I then had to clean that as well. I realize it's the renters responsibility, but the maintenance people should still be told to do it in case the renters don't - and many won't. The boats had no ropes and no bailing scoops, so it was a bit difficult manage them. The rudder of the paddle boat did more harm than good. The ceiling fan in the master bedroom was broken, which was replaced by tiny little standing fan. There were some old fishing rods just kind of standing in one corner. There was very little extra TP and PT. The cabin costs 1,200 dollar per week, details like this should really be taken care of.
