About this property

Lake House Benalla- Late Sunday checkout available upon request

Located in the centre of town but with the feel and privacy of a farm house the Lake House allows you to drop a fishing line on your doorstep whilst watching the sunset. Sitting on a beautiful half acre property flanked by verandas, sash windows and a calming sunroom, the Lake House provides relaxing accommodation complete with 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The large living room and separate dining area provide grand spaces to relax with friends and family complete with designer sofa that seats 10 in front of the open fire place.

With an Edna Walling garden and Lake views it has had many notable guests in its time including Edna herself.

We offer generous king beds and king singles with high quality linen will ensure a good nights sleep only to be woken by kookaburras, ducks and church bells- yes church bells still ring in Benalla.

The original art deco features adorn the house with original ornate bathroom remaining in great condition. The kitchen has everything you need including baking items if you choose to indulge in some old fashion country style cooking.

Coffee and the local pubs are a short walk. The town's aquatic center with both indoor and outdoor pools is literally a stones throw away. Within 400 meters you will be able to visit the Art Gallery, Botanical Gardens and join the famous Street Art trail. A 5.6km walking circuit around the lake is something to aim for each morning complete with outdoor gym stations.

The Benalla region includes wineries, golf, Winton raceway, Winton wetlands, the gliding centre, ballooning, historical tours, museums and of course check out Ned Kelly country. If you wish to bring the bike Benalla has many trails of varying degree of difficulty. If that's not enough we'll give you local knowledge of where to spot koalas, kangaroos and platypus.

Recreational activities include lawn tennis and croquet club at end of the street, (honesty box for fees) barefoot bowls and drinks with locals on friday nights (100m down the road), unlimited golf on a great course with kangaroos at low cost.

The configuration of rooms is:

Bedroom one- King size bed in large room. Can arrange fold out beds for children by prior arrangement at extra cost
Bedroom two- King size bed in large room. Can arrange fold out beds for children by prior arrangement at extra cost
Bedroom three- Double "Laura Ashley" bed
Bedroom four- 2 King single beds with 1 single trundle bed

Maximum occupancy is 14 using 3 fold outs and 2 trundles. Maximum Adult occupancy 10.

Pets are welcome via pre-arrangement but we ask that you keep them outside as some of our guest have allergies and our house has carpet. There is a small enclosed area we suggest you leave your pet in if you leave the house which is away from the neighbours. If your dog loves a swim we suggest you bring some old extra towels- it will get muddy. Note there is hedged fencing on the property but clever dogs can find their way out if not in the enclosed area. Guests are responsible for cleaning up after their pets. There will be extra cleaning costs should any signs of your furry friend be left behind so please check all outside areas. The off lead area of the Lake Benalla walking track is fantastic.

Children most welcome. They'll love the garden, and close proximity to pool, skateboard ramp, parks, library and fishing. However, please be vigilant as this property is surrounded by waterways that are especially a risk to wandering toddlers.

NOTE: Our home is suitable for small family and friend gatherings. Our neighbours have feelings too.

We ask that you treat our home as if you were the next guests and leave it the way you found it.

There is cctv security outside the entrances to the property .

We've travelled and lived all over the world and in Melbourne when returning to Australia. We love the seasons , being in the outdoors and going on holidays with friends and families.

Benalla is the gateway to the north east so we know we are always a short drive from something going on in the region. Being only 2 hours easy drive up the highway from Melbourne it was a perfect and easy spot for us to enjoy country life.

Why they chose this property

Lawn tennis courts, outdoor pools, lakes and botanical gardens its all here. Church bells ring and people turn out in droves for festivals or the local football game.
Benalla is close to a variety interest areas including the Alps, wineries, rivers and a 2 hour drive to Melbourne. Its history is rich as its the natural surrounds. Its full of surprises and interesting people. There is always something to do for the curious and enough natural beauty to sit back and not do a we mention the great weather (usually)

What makes this property unique

Our home has a significant history and unique location in Benalla.

Situated on Lake Benalla it was once owned by the Ledger family who were major patrons of the town. They are predominately known for donating the largest private collection of art in Australia to the town and contributing to the construction of the Benalla art gallery that houses it. The Ledgers also commissioned Edna Walling to design the garden that exist in almost original form today. Views of the lake and gallery are available and the Edwardian home has been lovingly maintained.

The garden is alive with bird life including various parrots. Water birds including ducks and pelicans can be seen on the lake and the trees are constantly changing with the seasons.

The house has numerous vantage points for viewing the lake and garden including patios, large verandah and custom built sun-room.

This house was built at a time when things were built to last. Double bricked makes climate control a breeze, soaring ceilings, ornate windows and attention to detail throughout. There are signs of art deco craftsmanship throughout the home.

The large inviting living room with open fire, french doors off the dining room to outside patio all add to the charm.
