About this property

Downtown Historic Area, Arts and Crafts Cottage PREMIER HOST SINCE 2013

We are honored to have over 200 VRBO published "5 Star" Reviews since we began operating in 2013, and, proud to have been a Premier Host since 2013 - status recently stripped due to reservation request by returning guest, requesting dates six months out for dates that we would be out of town on, but had not been blocked on calendar yet. We are exceptionally proud to provide a quaint, clean, and comfortable cottage that we would want to stay in ourselves!! Spend some quality time in our sweet little town, Black Mountain, North Carolina - The 'Little Town That Rocks". From our quiet historic neighborhood, it is only a quick, three to five minute walk to our "main" street, State Street, in downtown Black Mountain. Come and explore the cute shops, nice restaurants, and fun bars....notice the rocking chairs along the way, in our cozy town that is called "The Front Porch of Western North Carolina."

Hattie's is located behind our home, though you have absolute and complete privacy and sole use of the entire beautiful backyard. Most times, you will not even know if we are home. The driveway and path to the cottage is gravel. For those with mobility issues, this may not be the place for you because of the gravel drive/pathway.

This cottage has one bedroom and bathroom with full size tub/shower separate from the main living area of combination living room and kitchen. A full kitchen -- fully equipped with complete sets of dishes, glasses, utensils, and appliances including dishwasher, full range/oven, full size refrigerator, and microwave. You will find most everything you need for cooking; pots/pans, cooking utensils, serving dishes, storage containers, baking sheets...this kitchen is very well supplied for cooking meals. Gas "wood stove" fireplace that is perfect for that cool fall or winter evening, hardwood flooring with rugs, lovely covered porch off the bedroom overlooking "secret garden" backyard oasis with chairs and table and bamboo blinds for even more privacy if desired.

Enjoy your morning coffee or evening cocktail from the covered deck overlooking our backyard with a pond feature and small waterfall....if you decide to sit by the pond, become completely relaxed as you watch the gold fish swim around the beautiful water plants. The sound of many species of birds and the gentle breeze blowing through the trees will calm you and one can't believe we are so close to town. Listen to the wind chimes and watch hummingbirds buzzing around, birds bathing in the upper pond, and squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks running around the grounds. In the evening, you may hear our owl and frog that are living in our backyard this year. We know you will enjoy our "little bit of heaven" at Hattie's Hideaway. We have had two couples become engaged while they were staying at Hattie's Hideaway; the proposal was presented in the sweet and wonderful backyard while the couple was enjoying time together there....we are honored they chose Hattie's for that special moment in their lives!

On a cool evening, enjoy another amenity in the backyard; sit by a fire in the outside fireplace (no smoke wafting in your face like a fire pit!) provided with wood and even set up for your evening each day! You can roast marshmallows/hot dogs with provided skewers in the cottage. A lovely outdoor patio for your use with a table and umbrella, chairs, rocking chairs under cover from rain, gas grill, and a hammock. Have your lunch or dinner in the lovely backyard on the patio.

All quality linens provided. ** We replace our higher end linens every two years** Keurig coffee maker (new 2021); your first morning's K-cups and a nice selection of tea bags are provided along with milk/sugar. Free WiFi, 39 inch flat screen television, full-sized kitchen appliances (refrigerator with ice maker) and washer/dryer (with all needed laundry supplies) in the cottage basement. Any and all starter supplies provided (trash bags, dishwashing liquid as well as dishwasher detergent, plastic wrap/aluminum foil/storage bags, picnic basket and supplies like paper plates/disposable cups/plastic flatware, basic spices/oils for cooking/grilling, paper towels, toilet paper, facial tissues, bath soap, basic small sized toiletries for one day in case you forgot to pack something, bug repellent spray, sunscreen....all this and we provide many other amenities for your use such as hiking sticks, backpack with first aid kit, beach towels, bathrobes, umbrellas, blanket for picnics, camp chairs, travel coffee mugs and water bottles for you to take to concerts, hikes or a day trip to Biltmore Estate, Blue Ridge Parkway, or NC Arboretum.

Please note that Hattie's Hideaway is located behind our home in Black Mountain and we are full-time residents.

In January 2020, we completed some updates to refresh the cottage including interior painting, then completed exterior painting (2021) and this year, 2022, we have replaced living room furniture with two new chairs with ottoman and a new sofa, as well as a new Serta mattress for the queen bed as well as new linens (we replace all sheets/towels every two years) new pots and pans, etc. We try to always be mindful of our guests' comfort and keep a close eye on the quality and condition of the furniture and supplies in the cottage. We want to always be certain that we ourselves would love to stay at Hattie's Hideaway and be comfortable spending time there!!

I clean Hattie's Hideaway myself and I follow all recommended safety guidelines in cleaning the cottage using Lysol and Clorox products and wiping down all "touch" spaces along with thorough comprehensive cleaning; in addition, I shampoo the rug and clean the upholstered furniture every month, or more often, if there has been a spill. We do not allow animals so as to maintain an allergy free zone as best we can, additionally, we ask our guests not to use strong fragrances or cooking spices inside the cottage.

We hope that you will love Hattie's Hideaway and our truly special backyard, as much as we do! We thank you for your consideration and thank you in advance for your business -- Pam and Worth

Fantastic!
This was one of our best stays and we've stayed in a LOT of places. The cottage is absolutely adorable and perfectly appointed. Lush thick bath towels, super comfortable mattress, pillow cases were IRONED, lovely furniture. We had all the accoutrements one would need. Small, yet perfect for two. And the grounds, OMG, just wonderful. We enjoyed morning coffee and a little reading in front of the fireplace in the backyard as we listened to the water gurgling from the lovely pond. The owners Pam and Worth are more than precious. Graceful, attentive, engaging, respectful, full of knowledge and suggestions. The location is in the historic district and minutes from a walk to downtown. There's a wonderful bakery across the street which proved to be a tad problematic for my hips but oh, so, so good. The town and neighborhood is so sweet, the people are beyond friendly. Honesty, the entire area is stunning nestled into the mountains with views at every turn. We enjoyed live music and a beer at the White Horse, a really cool little venue. We're vegan and between Black Mountain, Asheville and grocery stores we had plenty of options. We're also trail runners and the trails are next level, albeit not for the faint of hearts; it's a mountain town after all. If you run, hike or walk, check out Black Mountain Running Company. Great service. Asheville is 15 minutes away so very convenient. We saw a great play and enjoyed some amazing food and beer options as well. We'll be back no doubt. God willing, we'll move there someday.

Truly perfect!
The host was amazing, welcomed us upon our arrival and set perfect fires up for us both nights. The cottage was so clean and comfortable, coffee all ready to go and comfy bedding, towels etc. they even had cream and sugar so we didn’t have to go to the store! The back yard area was a perfect nature area with chipmunks and bunnies running around As well as all kinds of birds to watch right off the cute little deck that overlooked it all. The location was easy walk to downtown and lake Tomahawk. Honestly couldn’t have asked for a better weekend getaway and would definitely go back!

Returning visitors to a special place
Pam is the ultimate host! She and her husband have thought of everything that you could possibly need for a wonderful stay. The cottage is the most well stocked and cleanest of any place we have stayed. All my husband and I needed to bring was a suitcase with our clothes. It is cozy and quiet, yet conveniently located and an easy walk to all the shops and restaurants in town. In the evenings, we would sit out by the outdoor fireplace enjoying the sounds from the little pond. We had a lovely time and I am certain we will visit again.

Perfect Quiet Hideaway Cottage in Town
We LOVED our stay at Hattie's Hideaway. It was one of the best VRBO experiences we have ever had! The cottage was a perfect size and the hosts have thought of everything guests could possibly need or want during their stay. Plus, the location is convenient to the heart of Black Mountain dining and shopping as well as the Lake Tomahawk city park. We parked the car when we arrived and walked everywhere else the rest of our visit. This cottage will NOT disappoint!

We both moved back to the Asheville area in the early 1990's, where I grew up and Worth spent his summers as a child. We absolutely love Black Mountain! It brings back all of those wonderful memories of growing up in a small neighborhood! Kids riding bikes, sitting on our front porch greeting passers by, walking our dogs in the evenings, visiting with our neighbors, taking a walk down to the ice cream shop or sometimes hearing the ice cream truck drive through the neighborhood! We invite you to come and enjoy our little town and bring back your own childhood memories - or - create some new memories at our sweet Hattie's Hideaway!

Why they chose this property

Located in a sweet historic neighborhood situated in the lovely small mountain town of Black Mountain! You can take a leisurely stroll to downtown shops and restaurants, or you can take a walk to Lake Tomahawk just five minutes (4 1/2 blocks) away. Hike great trails or go paddle boating in Montreat, play golf at the Black Mountain Golf Course, enjoy tennis & basketball courts or take a swim at the pool all located at Lake Tomahawk, take a drive into Asheville, or one of the many lovely towns situated around Asheville such as Brevard - Waynesville - Weaverville, or explore the Blue Ridge Parkway--- all of these are located from 2 minutes to 45 minutes away! During the winter months, skiing, tubing, and snow boarding only about 45 minutes away in Madison County. During the summer months, go boating, fishing, swimming in lakes located just 30 to 45 minutes away in neighboring counties of Henderson and McDowell. Western North Carolina provides opportunities to do just about anything you are interested in!!

What makes this property unique

If you want to just get away from it all, you can spend some restful time reading a book sitting by the pond, napping in the hammock, preparing a fun, gourmet meal with someone you love, or watching some television curled up on the sofa in front of the gas wood stove! There are lovely views from the porch off the bedroom, in the winter there are short range mountain views --- the backyard is private and unbelievably quiet for an in-town lot. We believe that Hattie's and Black Mountain offer anything that you might want to do or can serve as your home base as you head out daily to further explore Asheville and Western North Carolina.
