About the property

3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 8)

This stately, 3 bedroom and 3 baths, home rests on the lush 82 acre Whiffletree Farm. The farm and home provide a serene setting rich in history, agriculture, and natural beauty. Guests can enjoy the sense of being far from the busyness of city/suburban life, yet only 2 miles away from Old Town Warrenton, Virginia. Whiffletree Farm also allows guests the opportunity to delve into agro-tourism: gain exposure to sustainable farming, study resources (videos, books, articles) provided in home library, and purchase poultry, milk, eggs etc. from the farm store run by the farmers themselves, Jesse and Liz Straight.

History: For at least 80 years of the 20th century Whiffletree Farm was dedicated to horses and specifically, fox hunting. The Warrenton Hunt still rides the property and the hunting hounds (50-60) are kenneled next door. Celebrities like John and Jacquelin Kennedy and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor attended cocktail parties at Whiffletree as part of the social scene surrounding the 'Hunt.'

Agriculture: The farmers, Jesse and Liz Straight, raise pastured broiler chickens (and turkeys), free-foraging pork, grass-finished beef and pastured laying hens. Their farming method of using intensive rotation grazing creates a happy and healthy environment for the animals, improves the fertility of the land and provides more nutritious food for customers . Their cattle are 100% grass fed and their turkeys, broiler chickens, pigs, and laying hens are raised on fresh pasture, non-GMO feed, no antibiotics, no chemicals on the ground, and no toxic chemical washes when they are processed. All this work, precision and care, not only help keep animals, the earth and people healthier it also results in distinctively rich tasting food.

Natural beauty: There are lovely walks about the farm, near the stream or down by Great Run and bike rides along the lane. And just a stone’s throw away guests will find a variety of the many great things Virginia’s rolling hills and vibrant culture has to offer: the historic town of Warrenton (2 miles), the storied battlefields of Culpeper and Manansas (15 miles), Virginia’s great wine trails- vinards/wineries- (8 miles), the Blue Ridge Mountains and Skyline Drive (24 miles), the Town of Little Washington with it's famous Inn (17 miles), the Ashby Inn in Paris, Va.(20miles) and many more sites.

And lastly, in case hikes, bike rides and walks don’t satisfy your exercise needs, Warrenton has a large aquatic center with a competition pool, hot tub, water park with slides and workout facilities. Golf courses, a tennis club and a yoga studio are also just within a 10 minute drive. But don't overbook yourselves. The house, the farm and the grounds are special.

We spent a week here with our 5 little kids. This was hands down our favorite vacation! The kids loved exploring the farm, swimming in the creek and riding bikes up and down the long drive. The house was beautiful and very well equipped with everything we could possibly need. We enjoyed day trips to D.C., museums and battlefields. Our favorite part was meeting the kind people who work the farm and the owners of the property. Thanks for a great vacation!

Elegant but also fun for kids!

  • 5 of 5

The house was so beautiful, and we were pleasantly surprised to see a few items from the working farm in our fridge including fresh sausage and eggs! Breakfast was awesome. My son had a great time watching the animals on the farm from our porch. I was worried that the animals might wake us up in the morning but they were far enough away to not be a bother. Having a pack and play in the house also made it so easy to travel as a family. I would definitely recommend this rental to others. We had a blast!

My daughter and her friends stayed here in preparation for her wedding. Words cannot express how special this setting was for everyone. Breathtaking experience! To be on a working farm in such a lovely home was a combination that was simply exquisite. Thank you for making this possible!

Wonderful house and property for family gatherings!

We rented this house for visiting family and held a graduation party there. The home and setting is beautiful and was perfect for entertaining. It is a nicely refurbished house and everything works well and we didn't have any issues. We will definitely rent this property again!!

All the romatic notions you have had about a farm come to life

  • 5 of 5

My family and I were fortunate enough to spend a couple of days at the Whiffle Tree Farm in Warrenton, VA last month. The gentle sloping road into the property sets the tone for your stay. As soon as you pull up to the impressive house, you suddenly realize that the air is clean and does not smell what you’d think a farm should smell like, despite the 50 head of cattle a few dozen yards away. Maybe, I am just used to immediately putting the windows anytime I pass by an industrial farm to save myself and my car from the strong stench.

The house has been remodeled beautifully and maintains all the old charm of its rich past with newer features. You’ll find all the modern comforts like Wi-Fi, Krueg coffee maker (along with a pot) a flat-screen television, a Jacuzzi, etc. We spent afternoons taking in the bucolic scene from bike rides around the property and checking out the livestock. And evenings were spent relaxing on one of the several porches enjoying the springtime breeze, or from the large swing that hung from the old oak in the front yard.

Jesse, the owner, has no problems answering any questions you have about the operation and will happily show you how the whole operation runs. My two kids are beach bums from San Diego, and they could not get enough of the rooster that strutted around the property or the cows and their expressive faces. You can even buy what is produced at the farm store, (steaks, bacon, eggs, chicken, etc.) which also features products from other nearby farms. Our family loved having breakfast each morning, which featured farm fresh eggs, fresh sausage, and freshly baked bread at the long rustic table while watching the farm go about its business, which had been doing long before we awoke.

We were there only two nights, but it felt like more in the best way possible, because we seemed to do so much each day. Downtown Warrenton is only a couple of miles away, where you’ll find a local brewery and eclectic shops. However, we never felt the need to venture from Whiffle Tree, let alone turn on the television. I look forward to making this trip a part of our family vacation each year.
