About Paula and Dan
Hello. My name is Andy and I have a ten year old daughter named Hana. We love our paradise in nature and feel surrounded by serenity, beauty and an energy that is powerful and unique to our property. I have always had a passion for the ocean, exotic fruits and for gardening so this organic orchard on the ocean was the perfect find in 2009. I love adding new and more interesting specimen Palms, fruit trees, coffee, nuts, spices, cocoa and flowers such as vanilla bean orchids to the nearly 5 acre retreat. My latest interests are Dragon fruit, Hamakua coast coffee, rare orchids, heliconias and spices like true cinnamon and cloves! I am also interested in the medicinal benefits of various botanicals and I have a background in science as a doctor of Osteopathy board certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. We recently created a common room(check with Paula for availability) for people to meet from around the world, to talk, read, meditate, receive massage (several therapists available) or do yoga. This is the 'Zen Space.' Consider organizing your own healing retreats here at Hale kukui ) I am most at home in nature. I am a world traveler and have never seen such beauty as I do at Hale Kukui and I have seen nature at its finest in Switzerland, Fiji, CA, New Zealand, Bali, Europe or Australia. I also love where I am from in New England. I grew up in Maine where people are down to earth like they are in this historic part of Hawaii.
Paula and Dan purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Paula and Dan chose Honokaa
I have never seen anything that compares to all that Hale Kukui has to offer and would prefer its charm to any BNB or 5 star hotel that I have ever stayed at in the past years of travel home and abroad.
What makes this Cottage unique
You will feel at home, but more relaxed than ever, not just as a guest but as an integral part of Hale Kukui's natural earthy beauty with ocean, cliff and waterfall views that are second to none. Caretakers Paula and Dan are eager to help with any questions or special needs during your stay and they live in on site. We enjoyed our stay here. Had a fun little hike around the property. The cottage is a no frills experience. Lots of frogs singing at night and a little warm, but it was pretty much what we expected. Loved the area.
Peaceful and beautiful
Enjoyed the view and the location.
Cozy cottage with fresh fruit and coffee.
Great place to unwind and relax. Thank you ! We will recommend to our friends.
The property was not exactly what we had expected. It seemed that it was perched on a cliff overlooking Wapaio Valley But it was set quite a ways back, although the View was spectacular. The outside deck was in great need of paint with boards that were rotted. I happened to look under the bed and it was very dirty. It was hot with no air conditioner, but it did not say it had one so my bad. The area and the black sand beach was spectacular. We went 3days in a row.
Jane the owner was very nice.
Thank you for the "heads up" underneath the bed. The dust bunnies have been taken care of.
I do apologize for the appearance of the lanai/deck. We are just starting our slow time and that's we begin to repair, replace and repaint. We are a small operation so things do not move as quickly as we'd like or as a resort or condo situation.
I'm glad you did appreciate the view.
Waipio Valley, salsa and geckos
Paula and Dan are a wonderful couple with an amazing rental. They are both conversational, nice and thoughtful on places to eat and visit. The cottage is clean, peaceful, and has everything you need for enjoyable stay. The view was our leading reason to pick this location and it delivers. You will find yourself watching the coastline and waterfalls throughout the day and night for the different palate of colors they present. Couple this with the faint sound of a ukulele we heard on a few nights and the place becomes surreal.
Paula picked some fresh fruit (papaya, avocado, lemons, oranges and limes) before our arrival and placed them into a basket in the cottage. Later we picked up some tomatoes, onion and cilantro from the market to make our own version of a Hawaiian salsa – magnificent! During our stay, we made lemonade from the large lemons found in the orchard.
Although not native to the island, the day geckos were a fun, pleasant surprise. They are pretty animated chasing each other back and forth on the decking, rails, and gutters. They have clear, vibrant colors that ended up in a lot of our pictures. The geckos love the banana blossom over the tub and papaya.
Recommendations: visit the local Vanilla Bean farm (ticket includes an amazing lunch), in Honokaa visit Gramma's Kitchen with an appetite well before 3pm, get your super hike down to the Waipio Valley beach early before the crowd and mid-day sun.
My husband and I stayed here this week for a few days, and we loved it. We stayed in Kona the first half of our trip and wanted to stay somewhere on the northern end of the island to see Waipio, Hilo, and the Kohala Coast. It’s a little far from the Kohala coast and Hilo, but it’s very close to the Waipio Valley hike. We enjoyed the drive to the property from our days’ activities because it was fun to see the smaller country towns of Waimea (loved The Brewhouse and The Fish and the Hog and the Farmer’s market on Wednesdays) and Honoka’a. We felt like we were on a peaceful retreat. The frogs chirping and the rain falling at night was so fun to hear. And waking up to that gorgeous view in the morning is amazing. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting gorgeous views and something a little different from the ordinary.
Great location! Views spectacular. Walking distance to Wiapio valley. Paula a wonderful host.
