Built on a hill, this stone town house is right outside the old city walls (dating from the 2nd century B.C.) of Historical Centre of Cortona, an old city founded by The Etruscans, the ancient civilization that built Rome. Cortona is conveniently located in a 1,15 hrs drive from Florence, 2 hrs from Rome and Pisa International Airports, 30 mins from Perugia (in Umbria) and Arezzo, 45 mins from Siena, 35 mins from Montepulciano, 1hr from Assisi (Umbria) e Montalcino (where the famous 'Brunello' wine comes from)...all the best sights of the famous Tuscan countryside, with yellow sunflower fields in the summer and multi colored trees in the spring!

Cortona is famous as the inspiration and setting for the book Under the Tuscan Sun, (that later became a movie) written by USA writer-novelist Francis Mayes. It also homes a branch of the Georgia University - USA, for artistic matters, since 1970.

About Mirko Tessandori

I'm a musician traveling the world, living between the US and Italy and I manage my family properties from wherever I am. I cherish the friendship we get to establish with our guests, that then become our friends and come back to stay with us! :-)

Mirko Tessandori purchased this house in 1948

Why Mirko Tessandori chose Cortona area

This was my great grand father warehouse, where he and his son (my grandfather) used to keep the wood for their work. They both were carpenters and made some of the furnitures in the apartment. It has a great view of the valley and it sleeps up to 6 people, so it's very convenient for families or friends and it's only 6 mins walk from the center Piazza della Repubblica!

Great Place!

My wife and I stayed in the apartment for 5 days. A beautiful apartment in a fantastic location for both Cortona and exploring other communities in Tuscany. The host was very nice and helpful for both check in and throughout the stay. I would strongly recommend the apartment.

Lovely house in nice neighborhood. Loved the the owners Vanna and Mirko. The property is very steep. If you have mobility problems it isn't a good fit, but otherwise it's wonderful.

Casa Di Pietra, Cortona, Italy, Tuscany

Honestly, I delayed writing a review about our vacation at this gorgeous, stone house because it would take writing a book to truly express the magical vacation my husband and I experienced. It was more than we could ever expect or dream!

To say the owner, Vanna, and her son, Mirko, are now considered family cannot begin to describe the warmth, comfort, and helpfulness they extend to you. We felt ease from the very beginning when Mirko responded (in written, perfect English--BTW) almost immediately to our "what's the cost" email request.

The location is absolutely perfect. For those of you who are looking for a beautiful, peaceful, relaxing view, you have it here. If you want to walk to the piazza, restaurants, shopping, and not bother with a car, you have it here. If you have a car and want free parking, you have it here. Plus, this doesn't even begin to tell you how clean, up-to-date, lovely the apartment is. The main patio is spacious with lovely plants that will delight you with the multiple colors, textures, and species.

As for our specific apartment, Casa Di Pietra, we had plenty of space--enough for friends to visit and stay with us for a period of time. It was furnished beautifully with a combination of antique-Cortona-Tuscany flair furnishings accented by new contemporary, clean-line, modern furnishings. The mattress was soooooooo comfortable. I didn't know it was possible to sleep all night without waking up one time (9 straight hours most of the time), and wake up with no back, shoulder or neck pain and actually feel rested. The extra room/studio was a soothing, peaceful room in which to read, listen to music, or look out at night to see the millions of stars in the sky.

Vanna's cooking class is a must; even if you don't want to take a cooking class, it's still a must. Why? Because the food is DELICIOUS! What an evening of pure pleasure we experienced from the sharing of knowledge, to the tastebuds being ROCKED to the realization of the beginning of a rest-of-our-life was incredible to say the least.

We love Cortona and it's people. We did not have one mediocre meal the entire month. The food is healthy, clean meaning organic or locally grown, beautifully presented and absolutely is the wine.

We didn't want to leave and will return to visit our Cortona family. After all, how often do you have the opportunity to visit heaven! Enjoy and delight in every precious second. Ciao! A presto!

A slice of heaven in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this fabulous stone house on our first (but most definitely not last) trip to Italy. As soon as I saw it on the internet I knew I had to stay here. The charm and character of the old walls are maintained but all the modern amenities are there for you. Your retreat from a busy day in the Val di Chiana. Mirko and his family were soooo welcoming. They went out of their way to make us feel at home. Any hiccups in understanding how things work in Europe were quickly handled by this dynamic duo and we were up and running in no time. Washing machines are tricky things over there!! The proximity of this home to the town was wonderful...outside the walls but easily accessible...ok, easily meaning steep but doable. The charm of the town is almost too felt like we were back in time. The food in the restaurants and the shopkeepers were both excellent. Make sure you bring good walking shoes or hiking boots, but remember you can stop and sit and have a coffee or a glass of wine anytime you need a rest. The view across the valley from the kitchen window in the house is .....well...magical. I hope you stay here on your visit as you will not be disappointed. The property is exactly as shown in the photos and the owners will make you feel like you never want to leave. We will be back. Ciao!

Perfect Tuscan vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this beautiful house to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and it was more than delightful! The home was spacious for 2 but will accommodate 4. We are very picky about beds and the bed in the home was super comfortable. The home has great modern amenities and the rustic nature of the wood chosen to compliment the stone work was breathtaking. The house is located just below the walls of Cortona. Be prepared to walk once there! We found Cortona to be the perfect place to explore shops, taste local foods and simply enjoy the beauty that surrounded us! Mirko & Vanna were gracious hosts and were always available to help with restaurant suggestions & day trips. Our Tuscan vacation was beyond expectation and will surely return!
