Built on a hill, this stone town house is right outside the old city walls (dating from the 2nd century B.C.) of Historical Centre of Cortona, an old city founded by The Etruscans, the ancient civilization that built Rome. Cortona is conveniently located in a 1,15 hrs drive from Florence, 2 hrs from Rome and Pisa International Airports, 30 mins from Perugia (in Umbria) and Arezzo, 45 mins from Siena, 35 mins from Montepulciano, 1hr from Assisi (Umbria) e Montalcino (where the famous 'Brunello' wine comes from)...all the best sights of the famous Tuscan countryside, with yellow sunflower fields in the summer and multi colored trees in the spring!

Cortona is famous as the inspiration and setting for the book Under the Tuscan Sun, (that later became a movie) written by USA writer-novelist Francis Mayes. It also homes a branch of the Georgia University - USA, for artistic matters, since 1970.

About Mirko Tessandori

I'm a musician traveling the world, living between the US and Italy and I manage my family properties from wherever I am. I cherish the friendship we get to establish with our guests, that then become our friends and come back to stay with us! :-)

Mirko Tessandori purchased this house in 1948

Why Mirko Tessandori chose Cortona area

This was my great grand father warehouse, where he and his son (my grandfather) used to keep the wood for their work. They both were carpenters and made some of the furnitures in the apartment. It has a great view of the valley and it sleeps up to 6 people, so it's very convenient for families or friends and it's only 6 mins walk from the center Piazza della Repubblica!

the best town in Italy, the best view, the best host

  • 5 of 5

This is our second trip to Cortona and we have stayed at Casa di Pietra both times. It's immaculately clean, well equipped and has comfortable beds.

The host, Vanna, will enhance your stay with her warmth & kind spirit. You'd be remiss not to take her cooking lesson, as it's a unique opportunity to see her cook local dishes & dine w views of the beautiful Val de Chiana.

Absolutely wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our home away from home! It was so cute, clean and just as promised. Do not miss the cooking class with Vanna. It was delightful, the food was fabulous and Vanna treated us like family. Cortona was wonderful! We visited 6 other Tuscany towns and we liked Cortona the best. Don't miss the fortress at the very top of the town or the museum in the center of town. The restaurants were fabulous. It was a delightful week from start to finish!

Great Place!

My wife and I stayed in the apartment for 5 days. A beautiful apartment in a fantastic location for both Cortona and exploring other communities in Tuscany. The host was very nice and helpful for both check in and throughout the stay. I would strongly recommend the apartment.

Lovely house in nice neighborhood. Loved the the owners Vanna and Mirko. The property is very steep. If you have mobility problems it isn't a good fit, but otherwise it's wonderful.

Casa Di Pietra, Cortona, Italy, Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

Honestly, I delayed writing a review about our vacation at this gorgeous, stone house because it would take writing a book to truly express the magical vacation my husband and I experienced. It was more than we could ever expect or dream!

To say the owner, Vanna, and her son, Mirko, are now considered family cannot begin to describe the warmth, comfort, and helpfulness they extend to you. We felt ease from the very beginning when Mirko responded (in written, perfect English--BTW) almost immediately to our "what's the cost" email request.

The location is absolutely perfect. For those of you who are looking for a beautiful, peaceful, relaxing view, you have it here. If you want to walk to the piazza, restaurants, shopping, and not bother with a car, you have it here. If you have a car and want free parking, you have it here. Plus, this doesn't even begin to tell you how clean, up-to-date, lovely the apartment is. The main patio is spacious with lovely plants that will delight you with the multiple colors, textures, and species.

As for our specific apartment, Casa Di Pietra, we had plenty of space--enough for friends to visit and stay with us for a period of time. It was furnished beautifully with a combination of antique-Cortona-Tuscany flair furnishings accented by new contemporary, clean-line, modern furnishings. The mattress was soooooooo comfortable. I didn't know it was possible to sleep all night without waking up one time (9 straight hours most of the time), and wake up with no back, shoulder or neck pain and actually feel rested. The extra room/studio was a soothing, peaceful room in which to read, listen to music, or look out at night to see the millions of stars in the sky.

Vanna's cooking class is a must; even if you don't want to take a cooking class, it's still a must. Why? Because the food is DELICIOUS! What an evening of pure pleasure we experienced from the sharing of knowledge, to the tastebuds being ROCKED to the realization of the beginning of a rest-of-our-life friendship...it was incredible to say the least.

We love Cortona and it's people. We did not have one mediocre meal the entire month. The food is healthy, clean meaning organic or locally grown, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious...as is the wine.

We didn't want to leave and will return to visit our Cortona family. After all, how often do you have the opportunity to visit heaven! Enjoy and delight in every precious second. Ciao! A presto!
