The idyllic terrace is partly covered by an ancient vineyard and is the ideal spot for sunbathing or simply relaxing, taking in the riveting fragrance of the orange blossom (in April) and the ever-changing colours of the spectacular mountains beyond. Right beside the sunny terrace there is a huge stone-built barbecue.

Inside you can enjoy a lovely intimate atmosphere within the thick-stone built walls in an authentic traditional southern Spanish style, with a pleasant indoor temperature all year-round. Both bedrooms, particularly the cozy cave-bedroom carved into the rock, are perfect for an enjoyable siesta on a hot summer afternoon and the open fireplace in the living room gives warmth in the winter evenings. In order to get to the cave-bedroom, you have to walk through the other bedroom. In addition, the house contains air conditioner and a heating system, Internet TV with free video library and free WIFI over the whole house and part of the Garden and pool area.

The new kitchen is fully equipped and has high standard facilities. You will have all that you need (for example, sharp kitchen knives, large red wine glasses, quality mattresses and bed linens, north European standard duvets and towels).

The private swimming pool (3.5x6.5m plus a shallow part, open from April to November) and the lawn area surrounding it are fenced and completely childproof. The lush garden with abundant green vegetation is entirely child-friendly and has a playground, tire swing and a rocking horse.

The property is located in the heart of the Alpujarras, in the green and lush south slopes of Sierra Nevada with its breathtaking landscapes and mild and sunny micro climate all year round. You will have the perfect opportunity to experience and enjoy the authentic and genuine Andalucia intimately, away from the busy touristic spots. Straight from the house, you can enjoy wonderful walks through the valley or up to the hills. By car, you can have amazing excursions to the high part of the 'Las Alpujarras' with its white and picturesque mountain villages or to the snow-covered peaks of Sierra Nevada. The mountain chain reaches an altitude of 3.484 m and is replete with a unique wildlife, beautiful rivers and pristine lagoons. The house is only 25 minutes driving distance to the coast, 40 minutes to Granada (one of the most beautiful and lively historic and cultural cities in the world) and little over than one hour to Sierra Nevada ski resorts.

Day trips can include beautiful destinations such as Cordoba, Ronda or Seville, or National Parks like Sierra de Grazalema, Sierra de Cazorla and Cabo de Gata.

Blessed with gorgeous weather all year round (including winter time), this region will give you an endless variety of activities and events: you can ski all the way from end of November to April; olive harvest for our own biological olive oil begins in December; almond flowering bloom starts in January; in March, Órgiva celebrates its patron saint with spectacular fireworks; during Easter time there are impressive marches and processions; the historical and revered orange blossom El Azahar occurs in April, filling the valley with its enticing scents; May is an excellent month to go hiking; Granada’s famous Féria with daily corridas de toros (bullfighting) happens in June; July and August vibrate with cheerful and animated village festivals; in September you can enjoy the warm waters in the stunning Mediterranean beaches; the Feria of Órgiva (harvest festival) happens in early October; and in November the local bars start to light their open fireplaces where people enjoy roasting chestnuts.

Whatever the season is, the region remains lively and vibrant with enjoyable activities. All over the year and across the whole region (mountains and coast), restaurants, cafes and beach bars by the sea are open and will give you the chance to experience our gorgeous gastronomical culture and the Andalucian lifestyle.

About Oliver Baun

I came across the Alpujarras by chance during my journey through Spain in the mid 80's. This was about the same time as the famous book writer Chris Stewart arrived into the area. Years later he published his bestseller ‘Driving Over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucia (The Lemons Trilogy)’ where he tells all these funny tales and amazing experiences he had in this very region. I also discovered the same sort of authentic unspoiled paradise as he did. Back then, south of Granada was very different to what it is now. The area was impoverished, there were not many cars around but lots of donkeys instead, TV was a novelty and people actually 'lived' in the bars. There was no VAT tax yet and no motorway for hundreds of miles. Granada was a day journey away and northern Europe a different planet. I was in heaven. I’ve been living in this area for almost 30 years and my children were born and grew up here. I absolutely love this region. Since then, I've been exploring the many things this area has to offer: hiking, skiing, cycling, snorkeling, biking, cooking, climbing and partying, of course. It´s my home and it feels like paradise!

Oliver Baun purchased this house in 1995

Why Oliver Baun chose Sierra Nevada

The privileged and quiet area set in absolute natural and private tranquility in a fertile valley and only 1 mile away from town (15-20 minutes walking and 2 minutes by car). This is the perfect location to explore the immediate wild surroundings, Las Alpujarras, Sierra Nevada, Granada and the Costa Tropical.

What makes this house unique

El Cura is a stunning, paradise-like Andalusian villa in a perfectly tranquil location with a gorgeous and lush Mediterranean garden, beautiful swimming pool area, cozy and comfortable indoors, a long sunny terrace and a breathtaking view of the mountains. Secluded and yet close to town, its quality standards, finishing details and comfort guarantees a lovely place for the whole family to enjoy a wonderful, fun and relaxing holiday.

Its special location offers the unique opportunity to discover the natural Andalucía with its ancient Moorish villages, mountainous landscapes, Mediterranean beaches, the mighty Sierra Nevada and the historic town of Granada among many other spectacular sites.

I am more than happy to share my knowledge gathered over the last three decades to give you suggestions on the best places to visit, the local foods to enjoy and all the unmissable activities you can experience in this Andalusian treasure.

Car: recommended

Cortijo El Cura is just 1 mile away from the town Órgiva, with easy access by car and it only takes about 20 minutes walk to reach it. The property is located in fertile valley of the Guadalfeo river within the south-faced slopes of the impressive Sierra Nevada and just 30 minutes away from the beautiful sandy beaches of the Costa Tropical.

This region is characterised by its lush Mediterranean landscape with diverse and fertile vegetation, Europe´s cleanest starry sky and over 300 days of sunshine a year.

Sierra Nevada provides the region with fresh water, which finds its way through the ‘Acequias’ all along into the terraced fields. Acequias are ancient Moorish irrigation channels built into the rocks which cross the hilts all over the region. There are amazing opportunities to explore the stunning nature with pleasurable walks and hiking tours.

The closest town, Órgiva, is a lively, southern Andalusian town, picturesquely situated in a large valley in the middle of a wild mountain landscape, surrounded by rivers, olive and orange groves between Granada and the coast. It has numerous street cafes, bars, restaurants, terraces, small shops, a weekly market and an old-fashioned market hall with fish, meat and vegetable stands. Órgiva also has supermarkets, organic shops, banks, a post office and an emergency hospital.

Only 7km away is the traditional spa-town Lanjarón, with its ancient but recently renovated baths offering various wellness services.

Granada is situated just 50km away from the house. Its marvelous and indescribable beauty with breathtaking Moorish-medieval palaces of the Alhambra makes this city one of the true gems of Europe.

There are three excellent golf courses within the radius of 30km from the property.

And there is also, of course, Sierra Nevada. This is Spain´s most modern ski resort and the one with the most sunny days in the whole Europe. It has an altitude between 2000m and 3400m over 110km of slopes. High snow, long and wide pistes, reasonable prices and a surprisingly comfortable atmosphere make Sierra Nevada an exceptional ski destination.

After a ski day, there will be a fire in the fireplace and a freshly squeezed orange juice waiting for you in the house. On request, you can also book an irresistible hot Finnish wood-fired sauna.

The privileged location of this property gives you the unique opportunity to choose between going skiing in the Sierra Nevada, enjoying the urban and cultural buzz of Granada, sunbathing on the beach, exploring the local nature or staying in the house having a barbecue in the garden.

The nearly 800-year-long period Moors and Arab culture has influenced the landscapes of Alpujarra more than any other Spanish regions. The culture of the Moors is reflected in the architecture as well as in the arts and crafts, music and cooking. But above all, the Moors cultivated the land, built terraces and irrigation ditches, and brought a variety of plants and fruits from the East that shaped the landscape until the present days. Órgiva is known for its millenary olive trees, some which were planted by the Romans, with their powerful, distinctive gnarled trunks. Today there is an interesting addition to the old traditional alternative culture of artists, craftspeople, organic farmers or shops, Arabian tearooms, yoga and flamenco schools and a Buddhist center.

Culinary highlights in Órgiva: Spain is a gourmet's paradise and a country that enjoys the pleasure of food. The cuisine of the Alpujarra lives from the natural flavor of its products due to the unique combination of different altitudes, temperatures, natural waters and microclimate. As such, its cuisine oozes of colorful and vibrant taste. There is a vast myriad of delicious stews (including the world-famous paella), air-dried mountain ham, salames, chorizos, mountain cheese, seafood, fresh vegetables, wine, Cava, Sidra, and other local dishes which are considered world-class foods. Many of these specialties are served as tapas (delicious nibbles that come with a drink – beer, glass of wine or sherry).

I would like to point out that as a house owner, I am very aware that our guests trust us with something very valuable, namely a part of their precious annual vacation. My job is to welcome them as guests, to introduce them into the house, to answer questions, to carry out repairs or services, to take care of the garden and the pool, or to do weekly work in the country such as pool maintenance and irrigating. In doing so, I take extraordinary care of the preferences of my guests, whether they are looking for more contact or prefer a completely undisturbed holiday. In this respect you and your holiday are guaranteed in very good hands.

Tranquility in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I left Canada for a month long vacation and selected Cortijo del Campo as a place where we could rest, travel around the villages, enjoy the local fare, be involved in true Spanish culture and be minutes away from town. This lovely home and location provided it all. We truly enjoyed sitting on the deck enjoying the scenery, listening to the birds, eating oranges and clementines right from the trees in the back yard. Many mornings we collected a dozen or so oranges and squeezed fresh orange juice. The home was well equipped, clean, the beds were very comfortable and even though it was chilly at night we had plenty heat to keep us comfortable. While we did have neighbours, they were a distance away and we were never bothered by noise. Oliver Baun, was always available to answer questions and make recommendations. He left a manual with easy to read instructions, restaurant recommendations, venues, maps, walking trails. We could be as busy or as lazy as we wanted. You are in the mountains though and because of my lack of research, I was not at first prepared for the mountain roads. I did however soon learn that the roads were well maintained and led to astonishing villages through landscapes, beautiful beyond description. I would recommend this rental to my friends and anyone who may ask.

Most tranquil and private close to town

  • 5 of 5

This is a perfect to get lost in the beautiful region of the Alpujarra, yet a short walk up a quant track leads you to the charming town of Orgiva.

Every detail is taken care of with Oliver's touches of hospitality, including a selection of good food in the refrigerator and a wonderful bottle of local wine to enjoy upon your arrival.

The pool area and grounds around the house are perfect to stay in all day, with bounds of fresh fruit to pick and eat. The house is most comfortable, with a delightful kitchen to cook great meals or simply make fresh coffee and pastries from the local bakery.

Anyone who is looking for a delightful getaway with the perfect balance between privacy and close proximity to Orgiva's charming town center will find this a perfect destination. One week here will bring many more to come...

Hidden treasure

  • 5 of 5

Oliver's sleepy hideaway could not have been more relaxing and enjoyable. The Alpujarra Region of Southern Spain ranks in the highest quartile of places we've visited all over the world, with the topography and warmth of the people as the most relevant points of enjoyment. The house is perfect for anyone who appreciates simplicity and warmth, while still providing all the conveniences of house rental. Access to the coast and mountains makes this place a must returen visit!

Beautiful, peaceful, stunning views, charming.

  • 5 of 5

Cortijo el Cura is a lovely rustic but beautfully appointed cottage. Sitting out on the terrace enjoying the stunning views with a bottle of the owner's homemade wine, some local cheese, ham and bread - simply heaven! The secluded pool surrounded by lush vegetation is a delight. It feels like a remote hideaway but only a short drive and 1/2 hour walk into town. The area is simply stunning!

A slice of tranquillity!

  • 5 of 5

Thoroughly recommend a stay here! Accommodation and facilities are excellent.

Such an idyllic place. Waking up in the cool, yet cosy cave was lovely. Picking oranges from the plentiful trees in the garden and enjoying freshly squeezed orange juice was such a pleasure! Days were spent lazing on the balcony and going for dips in the lovely refreshing pool or venturing out in the car for day trips to the beach, into the mountains and to the gorgeous Granada. Followed by blissful evenings spent outside by the BBQ eating paprika prawns and sipping a glass of wine.

This was our first family holiday with our little girl and we went home with many wonderful memories! Hopefully we will get a chance to visit again in the future!
