Description of Casa Acquafresca, near Orvieto, Italy:
This country house, renovated in 2001, lies among meadows and fields and is surrounded by oak and chestnut woods. Even in very hot weather, the walls made of local tufa stone guarantee pleasantly cool temperatures indoors. The spacious grounds include sun-drenched meadows with numerous old trees, the shade of which seems made for the siesta hour. The house has two storeys. On the ground floor there is a large kitchen with an open fireplace, a dining area and two splendid, spacious living rooms, from which three doors lead out to two terraces, one of which is roofed. A walled stairway leads up to the first floor, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms leading off a spacious corridor. The house is well appointed and elegantly decorated, with old Italian furniture tastefully blended with modern elements.
Leisure time and sports: In the immediate vicinity (7 kilometres) is Lake Bolsena, a large crater lake, whose very clean waters extend to a depth of 150 metres, offering wonderful swimming conditions, particularly on its western banks. Surfing and sailing are possible with good wind conditions, particularly in the afternoons. Boats can be rented (mostly sailing boats). If you wish, we can provide you with up to 4 mountain bikes at a cost of 30 Euros for each bike per week. Please make your request for the number of bikes that you need at the time of booking. You can go for particularly beautiful walks in the nature reserve of Monte Ruffeno, which can be reached in less than half an hour. And the chestnut and beech woods of 2000-metres high Monte Amiata, which lies mostly in Tuscany, are worth an excursion.
Culture: All the sightseeing available in the area will leave you no time to get bored! The only problem is choosing between the many Etruscan tombs and the impressive museum in Tarquinia (60 kilometres away), and beautiful towns within a radius of about 50 kilometres, such as Todi, Viterbo and Orvieto, or smaller places like Tuscania, Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano. Please feel free to contact us at any time for further information.
Sea bathing: Only 80 kilometers away, or a good hour´s drive along an interesting road, and you are on one of Italy´s cleanest beaches. In 2007 'L´ultima spiaggia', that is the last beach in Tuscany before the border with Lazio, was ranked in the highest category (along with only a few other beaches) by a well known environmental protection organisation. Here you can walk for hours along the beach, or enjoy delicous fish meals at a restaurant there (with table service or self service), or in the evenings, drink an aperitif as the sun sets behind Monte Argentario.
I stayed here with my husband and two of our friends for seven nights and we all had a lovely time. The house is beautiful and it is a great location very close to the centre of Orvieto. It was great to just relax and is also very good for seeing Umbria. I would definitely come back as it was one of my favourite places. The owner Veronika was always available via email and very helpful.
Three weeks in this wonderful country house made us fall in love with Umbria and Italy. The house is well equipped and on a beautiful acreage close to all kinds of interesting places to visit ... and at the same time offering the peace and quiet beauty or rural Umbria.
Our host Aledino, who lives on the site, made the stay a very special one. He and Veronika gave us great advice on places to visit and all the extra services that one would never expect - a drive and pick-up to the train station to solve the parking problem, a trip to his friend's restaurant for an unforgettable and wonderful meal ... and constant little surprises. He gave us a jar of lemon marmalaide he had just made, shared tastes of the first wine and left fresh tomatoes, peppers, etc to make our country stay so authentic.
We would highly recommend this as a truly special place to stay. The location, the house, the hosts, the whole experience could not have been better. We hated to leave!
Thanks so much for a wonderful time in Umbria.

We had a wonderful time in casa acquafresca. The owners and specially Alessandro gave us a warm welcome and made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The house is wonderful and in a very quiet and silent surrounding, a good start to see the beautiful places in the neighbourhood. Anything you want to know you ask the owners and they will give you lots of information.
The only thing missing is a swimming pool.
Alessandro and Veronika thanks and maybe we'll come back.

We spent our Spring Break here and had a lovely time. It is in a grat location for getting to the train station to go exploring to Rome or Florence. It was wonderfully peaceful!! We enjoyed our time immensley.
We had the opportunity to spend a week here. Our initial plans we're to use it as a place to rest between daily visits to Florence, Rome and the surrounding hill towns. After the first day we could have (and should have) just stayed here. It's so relaxing and well appointed that it became the best Italian experience for us. The host are very cordial and provided guidance on our ventures around the country side. They have done a terrific job on renovating the place so that you get a sense of the past with all of amenities and attractive styling of modern day Italy. Tranquil with terrific colors all day.

Casa Acquafresca lies 540 metres above sea level near Torre San Severo, a small village in the Orvieto area. The wooded hills west of Orvieto have a pleasant climate, and on hot days Lake Bolsena, only 10 kilometres away, is cool and refreshing. The intact natural setting without industrial development is ideal for those who want to rest and recuperate, while the numerous cultural attractions in the immediate vicinity, and indeed in the whole region, offer any number of amusements and recreational activities. Viterbo, once a Papal residence, is only 40 kilometres away, while Rome and Florence can be reached either by train or by motorway in one or one and a half hours respectively. Siena and Perugia can also be reached in about the same time. Orvieto with its magnificent cathedral was founded by the Etruscans, and has an intact mediaeval street plan. Apart from sightseeing opportunities and innumerable cultural events, Orvieto offers the chance to experience Italian small town life.
