About owner/property manager

I moved here 19 years ago from the Midwest. I built this cabin and barn from scratch and have enjoyed being here ever since.

owner/property manager purchased this cabin in 1994

Why owner/property manager chose Heron

This property had everything I was looking for, wilderness, water, fresh air, wildlife and trains.

What makes this cabin unique

It's unique because not only does it have the small town feel, it's close enough to larger cities if you need one and you don't have to drive very far for shopping, hospitals or whatever you might need. We like to say we are only 45 minutes from everywhere.

Peaceful, beautiful, fresh, clean, cozy, welcoming and a great value

  • 4 of 5

This was our third stay at Lonesome Crow with our hosts, Dona and Ernie Brown. The first two times we were on our way to or from Yellowstone or Glacier. This time we went out to specifically spend our week at Lonesome Crow. Dona and Ernie of course had everything ready. We were worried about making the eight hour drive from western Washington because the forecast said thunderstorms but it was only cloudy one day, the storms were toward the middle of Montana.

Great kitchen facilities, and the queen bed is one of the most comfortable I've slept in. There's even satellite tv if you can't go cold turkey from the rest of the world. I wish my wife Vicki couldn't get internet because her work just keeps bugging her on vacation. Also our little lab mix, Woody loves to go swimming in Triangle Pond as do we.

I regret having to write such a great review because it was our little secret but it's only a matter of time till the word gets out anyway. And Dona and Ernie deserve to have the truth written about their place, built by Ernies own hands, and there's a bigger place to stay dormitory style not fifty yards from the main house.

There you go you'll enjoy it if you stay. I love the sound of the train in the distance at night, under the spread of a thousand stars.

Pete and Vicki

Owner's Response: Dear Pete and Vickie What a nice review. Thank you! We are so glad you love it here and we are happy that we have a place for you guys to come to. Maybe someday, you'll come stay in the winter. There's nothing like a hot cup of tea, and a warm cozy fire, while you watch the Eagles soar over the river from the cabin. Also, Woody would love playing in the snow! We hope to see you again soon. Take care. Sincerely, Dona and Ernie

We had a fabulous time hanging out on the property. We were two couples and we each had our own"home" for the weekend, although we spent most of our time on the water! There is plenty of parking for toys; we had a boat and a horse trailer with lots of room to spare. The horses enjoyed their own stall and turn out. There is a pond about a mile away that you can ride, hike or drive to; we swam, kayaked and rode the horses there. We also hiked the trails right from the property, it was so peaceful! We are looking forward to making this a yearly vacation. The owners were accommodating and very friendly, lovely people☺

A wonderful getaway in the "big sky country"

  • 5 of 5

Ernie was waiting for us when we arrived, and immediately made us feel at home! He showed us around, told us a bit about the area and the property, then left us and advised he was only a half mile down the road if we needed anything. The first thing we saw upon looking around was a huge flock of wild turkeys! Their heads stuck up above the wheat in the field across the road, and when we went to snap photos, they started running across the road; what a sight to see!!

The main cabin has everything anyone could need including a washer and dryer! One bedroom, a fully furnished kitchen, comfy living room and nice deck overlooking the mountains. The living quarters above the barn were also great! There was a separate bedroom with one bed, and the main area had two large beds, a couch w/TV and a wet bar area; including a mini-frig and microwave; the only thing it didn't have was a stovetop. We were a party of 4 and had the entire ranch, so the lack of stove in the bunkhouse was not a problem.

We went for the Big Sky Blues Festival in Noxon, MT, which was a quick 6 miles away. The ranch itself is very modern, yet with a definite rustic feel; it's a perfect place for hunters and/or fishermen! Very quiet, other than the many long trains coming through; it gave us the immediate feeling of tranquility and restfulness. It's only about an hour or so from Sandpoint, with gorgeous scenery the entire drive.

The gravel road in front of the house made for a very dirty car, but the showers that came through wet down the road so the dust was not too bad!

All in all it was a fabulous four days and I would not hesitate to come back again; in fact, I can't wait to return! Hope to meet (Ernie's wife) Dona next time; she was SO hospitable on the phone!

Thanks for a wonderful vacation!

Wonderful Family Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

The description on this site does not do it justice! We rented both the cabin, which is the 1Bd/2Ba/full kitchen, and the "bunkhouse" over the barn which is another bedroom plus two queen beds in an open area, sitting room, convenience kitchen, 1 bath. We were a party of 5 (son-in-law/daughter + teenager, and 2 60+ ). The kids took the bunkhouse, we took the little house. We cooked our meals in the house and spent our evenings either sitting in the garden or on one of the decks. There is even satellite/Direct TV with a good smart TV so can sign into your Netflix/Hulu, although we did not find much time for that. Dona and Ernie are delightful hosts who went out of their way to welcome us on our Sunday PM arrival. The cabin has a deck with great views of the mountains, like being in a treehouse! And the bunkhouse also has a deck where you can look out over the fields and see deer and elk every evening. As other reviewers have mentioned there is also a very nice place to swim a short walk (or drive) away. This part of Montana is a nature lover's dream and you'll never run out of hiking, fishing, sightseeing. In the evenings you find out why they call Montana Big Sky Country as you watch the sky come to life with galaxies and millions of stars. The property is very well maintained with lovely grounds, and the hosts are very hospitable. They obviously care about their guests. Our only regret is we were unable to stay longer, but we will be back! My daughter and I are already talking about a mother/daughter trip bringing our horses since the barn will accommodate two.

Heron is surrounded by the beautiful Kootenai National Forest, and many areas to ride horses, off road vehicles and snow mobiles. It's peaceful and quiet.

Kootenai Falls is a must see while you are here. Just outside of Libby, MT. it has a suspended bridge that goes over breathtaking water falls: picnic tables, bathrooms and scenery you'll never forget. It's where The River Wild was filmed with Merel Streep.
