About the property

Secluded Mountain Ranch, Serene, Peaceful, Beautiful & ONLY 15 minutes to Cd'A!

This magnificent and spacious home has 6 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. The unique setting of this home is at the confluence of two streams and surrounded by pristine natural beauty to stir your heart. Like a painting come to life with romantic rock bridges, quaint stone steps and walls, lush pastures, fruit trees, flowers and jade-green ponds; this is a dream come true! This enchanting home is located at the gateway into the vast National Forest. This 150 Acre ranch is surrounded on three sides by U.S. Forest land; 2 1/2 Million Acres extending to Montana and Canada! There are deer, elk, moose, bear, wolves, bald eagles, wild turkeys, and ermine on or visiting this ranch; and we have maintained the property as a wildlife preserve. There are no visible neighbors and this is a place of serenity, peace and complete quiet except for nature!

The two streams are Marie Creek, which has high water in the Spring and early summer, along with several large pools of water and log waterfalls into mid-July. By early to mid-August, Marie Creek goes underground by the ranch. It continues to run above the ranch in the National Forest. Searchlight Creek runs the north-south length of the ranch and in front of the house. Searchlight Creek runs year round and is a perfect creek for children to play in the creek and the pools.

Home is 4,000 S.F with 6 Bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, 2 Stone Fireplaces and a great Western Decor!

Elk Mountain Ranch was homesteaded in 1908 and the Deed is signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, on display at ranch. The center of the current house was built in 1930, and retains much of the charm of that time period. The later additions are very western and rustic.

This family ranch was offered as a Vacation Rental beginning May 1, 2014 for the first time. The furnishings and décor are that of a high quality, Western motif reflective of the love we have for this beautiful ranch.

The ranch is 150 acres with access into the National Forest. You can pan for gold in the creek! We now have a fire pit and provide firewood for your use! You can bring your Mountain Bikes, ATV's, Snowmobiles or Cross Country Skis and stay for a fun-filled vacation summer or winter! We do provide sleds for our awesome sledding hill and snowshoes to use on the ranch or into the adjacent National Forest land.

Elk Mountain Ranch is also a private trout hatchery comprised of three separate spring-fed ponds where they are raised from fingerlings to full size adult trout which in turn, spawn, and continue the cycle. We provide trout food for our guests for which the trout which put on a spectacular show! We allow absolutely no fishing on the ranch and breaking this rule will forfeit one's damage deposit. Only the bald eagles and osprey fish unhindered; and we want our guests to enjoy all this majesty of nature.

About Michael Dickson

Elk Mountain Ranch has been in our family for over 40 years. My Dad was a German Artistic Stone Mason as is evident at the ranch. Our family immensely enjoyed and loved living at the ranch. We enjoyed foreign guests who came and stayed at the ranch, and it was such a wonderful experience, we decided to officially offer the home as a Vacation Rental. My parents lived there into their late 80's, as it was such a healthy environment. The ranch is now a wildlife reserve and timber farm. We live a short distance away which is convenient for care-taking the home and property. When you stay there, you have the home all to yourself!

Michael Dickson purchased this chateau / country house in 1970

Why Michael Dickson chose Northern Idaho

Elk Mountain Ranch is one of the most unique and beautiful properties in the Northwest. We found it amazing to feel so remote, secluded and peaceful and yet we could commute into Coeur d'Alene in 15 minutes for Shopping, Groceries, Restaurants, Church, Social Activities, Art Shops, the City Beach, or Silverwood Theme Park. In the photo we are tubing on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River which is just 25 minutes east, via Interstate 90.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

At Elk Mountain Ranch you can imagine it is 1906 and experience the peace and observe the wildlife just like the first pioneers did! ....If you'd rather golf at the World's only floating green, that is only 15 minutes away!....If you'd like a 'Cowboy steak' that is so huge you can't eat it all, that is 10 minutes away at the famous Wolf Lodge Inn & Steakhouse!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a family from Kanagawa, Japan who stayed at Elk Mountain Ranch before it was officially a Vacation Rental. We and our three children watched "Little House On the Prairie," and were intrigued with the American West. We contacted the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce looking for a recommendation of a real western ranch to stay at on our vacation. Elk Mountain Ranch was recommended. We stayed for 10 days and it was beautiful, memorable, and the best vacation of our entire lives. The owners even had Western cowboy hats, prairie bonnets and clothes so we could dress up and take pictures. We went horseback riding, hiking, enjoyed the ranch and the easy drive to Coeur d'Alene. It was an experience of a lifetime and we wouldn't trade the memories for a million dollars!!! We still keep in touch with the ranch owners and love them like family!! Thank you so much!

Beautiful relaxing area

  • 4 of 5

We shared our 50th anniversary with 11 family members at Elk Mountain Ranch. Everyone had a wonderful relaxing time. The property is lovely, setting the stage for a fun and relaxing time. We fed the fish in the fish ponds, road our 4-whellers on back roads, hiked and relaxed in the house visiting. The house sleeps 12 and had comfortable beds. It does not have air conditioning but has fans and did not get too hot for us.

Owner's Response: Correction; We do have Air Conditioning in the rooms which need it and the house stays comfortably cool in the summer because of the thick stone walls. I believe these guests used fans instead of turning on the A/C. We strive diligently for 5-Star Review Ratings and are disappointed when guests don't acknowledge our high standard of service we apply for our beautiful Elk Mountain Ranch.

Nice place to relax with family

  • 5 of 5

Lots of room to stretch out both inside and outside. Clean and comfortable place to stay. The kids enjoyed hiking, feeding the trout, catching frogs and just playing outside. There was plenty of shaded grassy area for our large party to comfortably relax. Susan and Mike are such thoughtful hosts. We were greeted with a tour and a well stocked pantry - an unexpected bonus since we didn't bring enough coffee!

Beautiful, unique, & inspiring

  • 5 of 5

The owners have a connection to this property that makes it special. Not only in the way they maintain the home and property but also in the way they want guests to enjoy their stay. We loved it. Our children loved it.

Our vacation to CDA was jam packed with daily adventures and one of our regrets is that we did not set aside an entire day to just enjoy the property. There is much to see and do.

Beds are comfortable. The house has lots of sleeping arrangements and we comfortably fit our family of 6 with our friends family of 5. The home is stocked with lots of extras like spices, pet supplies, toys, DVD videos, etc.

This was a special vacation for our family and our kids will never forget it.

A Beautiful Place, Rich in History

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect place for our extended family of twelve, who enjoys the out doors. We loved it! Mike and Susan were wonderful hosts. Susan shared a lot of her family history which made it even more special to stay there.

The lodge was spacious and quaint due to a series of additions that added rooms in a helter-skelter way, but we thought added to the charm in the beautiful setting. Having six bedrooms (plus a hide-a-bed), and four and a half baths was a definite plus. There was plenty of room for us to all be together in the main room or find refuge in a quieter place if needed. The kitchen space allowed several to work together for our meals. The cupboards were well stocked for us to use if we desired/needed. The dining room was adequate for us eat together as well as spread out a board game in the evening.

Those who liked to target practice enjoyed being able to do so. Feeding the "pet" trout in the ponds was a delight to many in our party. The "little people" thought the play room was a treasure trove of delights, and the costume closet provided much amusement.

The setting is beautiful, pressed up against the timbered mountains of National Forrest land. There is room to roam, ride bikes, find trails to access the NF.

We would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a quiet get away and loves nature.
