Overview

About the property

Secluded Mountain Ranch, Serene, Peaceful, Beautiful & ONLY 15 minutes to Cd'A!

This magnificent and spacious home has 6 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. The unique setting of this home is at the confluence of two streams and surrounded by pristine natural beauty to stir your heart. Like a painting come to life with romantic rock bridges, quaint stone steps and walls, lush pastures, fruit trees, flowers and jade-green ponds; this is a dream come true! This enchanting home is located at the gateway into the vast National Forest. This 150 Acre ranch is surrounded on three sides by U.S. Forest land; 2 1/2 Million Acres extending to Montana and Canada! There are deer, elk, moose, bear, wolves, bald eagles, wild turkeys, and ermine on or visiting this ranch; and we have maintained the property as a wildlife preserve. There are no visible neighbors and this is a place of serenity, peace and complete quiet except for nature!

The two streams are Marie Creek, which has high water in the Spring and early summer, along with several large pools of water and log waterfalls into mid-July. By early to mid-August, Marie Creek goes underground by the ranch. It continues to run above the ranch in the National Forest. Searchlight Creek runs the north-south length of the ranch and in front of the house. Searchlight Creek runs year round and is a perfect creek for children to play in the creek and the pools.

Home is 4,000 S.F with 6 Bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, 2 Stone Fireplaces and a great Western Decor!

Elk Mountain Ranch was homesteaded in 1908 and the Deed is signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, on display at ranch. The center of the current house was built in 1930, and retains much of the charm of that time period. The later additions are very western and rustic.

This family ranch was offered as a Vacation Rental beginning May 1, 2014 for the first time. The furnishings and décor are that of a high quality, Western motif reflective of the love we have for this beautiful ranch.

The ranch is 150 acres with access into the National Forest. You can pan for gold in the creek! We now have a fire pit and provide firewood for your use! You can bring your Mountain Bikes, ATV's, Snowmobiles or Cross Country Skis and stay for a fun-filled vacation summer or winter! We do provide sleds for our awesome sledding hill and snowshoes to use on the ranch or into the adjacent National Forest land. We now have 2 full size Tipis, beautifully hand painted with native designs which are great for photos, overnight sleeping, for children to play inside or for quiet meditation.

Elk Mountain Ranch is also a private trout hatchery comprised of three separate spring-fed ponds where they are raised from fingerlings to full size adult trout which in turn, spawn, and continue the cycle. We provide trout food for our guests for which the trout which put on a spectacular show! We allow absolutely no fishing on the ranch and breaking this rule will forfeit one's damage deposit. Only the bald eagles and osprey fish unhindered; and we want our guests to enjoy all this majesty of nature.

About Michael Dickson

Elk Mountain Ranch has been in our family for over 40 years. My Dad was a German Artistic Stone Mason as is evident at the ranch. Our family immensely enjoyed and loved living at the ranch. We enjoyed foreign guests who came and stayed at the ranch, and it was such a wonderful experience, we decided to officially offer the home as a Vacation Rental. My parents lived there into their late 80's, as it was such a healthy environment. The ranch is now a wildlife reserve and timber farm. We live a short distance away which is convenient for care-taking the home and property. When you stay there, you have the home all to yourself!

Michael Dickson purchased this chateau / country house in 1970

Why Michael Dickson chose Coeur d'Alene

Elk Mountain Ranch is one of the most unique and beautiful properties in the Northwest. We found it amazing to feel so remote, secluded and peaceful and yet we could commute into Coeur d'Alene in 15 minutes for Shopping, Groceries, Restaurants, Church, Social Activities, Art Shops, the City Beach, or Silverwood Theme Park. In the photo we are tubing on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River which is just 25 minutes east, via Interstate 90.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

At Elk Mountain Ranch you can imagine it is 1906 and experience the peace and observe the wildlife just like the first pioneers did! ....If you'd rather golf at the World's only floating green, that is only 15 minutes away!....If you'd like a 'Cowboy steak' that is so huge you can't eat it all, that is 10 minutes away at the famous Wolf Lodge Inn & Steakhouse!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a family from Kanagawa, Japan who stayed at Elk Mountain Ranch before it was officially a Vacation Rental. We and our three children watched "Little House On the Prairie," and were intrigued with the American West. We contacted the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce looking for a recommendation of a real western ranch to stay at on our vacation. Elk Mountain Ranch was recommended. We stayed for 10 days and it was beautiful, memorable, and the best vacation of our entire lives. The owners even had Western cowboy hats, prairie bonnets and clothes so we could dress up and take pictures. We went horseback riding, hiking, enjoyed the ranch and the easy drive to Coeur d'Alene. It was an experience of a lifetime and we wouldn't trade the memories for a million dollars!!! We still keep in touch with the ranch owners and love them like family!! Thank you so much!

Highly recommended for families and anyone wanting to get away from the city and enjoy nature.

  • 5 of 5

We met the owners upon arriving and they were very accommodating. My family had an awesome week vacation at Elk Mountain Ranch. We highly recommend this place to families. We live in Los Angles and the city of concrete. To go to a ranch filled with nature was a lovely opportunity for a family. The kids feed the fish, played in the fields and explored nature. The adults took lovely hikes along trails and sat and observed the wildlife. Birds, deer and butterflies abound. In the evening we made a large fire and had s'mores. Everyone went to bed happy and looking forward to the next day. There was plenty of room for people to find some personal space and then come back to interact with the family. Everything needed (pillows, blankets, towels, spices, pots, silverware) was provided and easily obtained.

Northern Idaho Great Place

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Elk Mountain Ranch. The setting is spectacular! The house provided plenty of room and the sleeping arrangements were well accommodated. But the best part is the outdoor space. Beautiful, just amazing! This is a perfect place for family vacations and/or groups. The house is rustic, but very comfortable. It does need some repairs and could stand some de-cluttering. I would have appreciated advance notice before the owner came to mow, since the noise of the mowers and other equipment was disruptive. But overall it was great!

Owner's Response: We are glad our guests had a "wonderful time at Elk Mountain Ranch!" ……. We keep the house in good repair, but a previous guest's child broke one of the large picture windows in the Great Room. It was a special order bronze 6' x 7' window and has taken several months to have made; and will be replaced on July 12th. ……. The walk in pantry is "cluttered," but most guests refer to it as "well stocked." ……. The ranch is constantly booked and we do need to mow the lawn once a week. Also, the flowers and lawn need to be watered. The fields especially around the fire pit, due to fire danger, are mowed once or twice a year. As needed, we will cut firewood to supply the woodshed for the house and the fire pit...….. A property this large requires constant care and maintenance. We strive in the off season to have all these things taken care of. Some work is on-going. In deference to our guests, we do not start any work before 11 AM and we finish by 6 PM, earlier if possible, on the one day we come out...….. We are pleased to share our beautiful and historic Elk Mountain Ranch with our guests and strive diligently for 5-Star Reviews.

A great place for our extended family of 10. Plenty of space. The creek and trout ponds provided lots of fun for the kids. The adults liked to sit out at night beside the fire. The owners were helpful and friendly. We would recommend this rental for your group.

Beautiful much needed vacation

  • 5 of 5

The owners are so nice. We enjoyed a lot of down time at their house. It was tough leaving. We got in so late that we didn’t meet them til mid week. The house is huge as it was just the three of us me my husband and our dog. We are already looking to book for January. Feeding the fish was my husbands fav part every morning. I still miss the smell of the fireplace. There are tons of options of walking around and food options in downtown area and the drive there is a very beautiful one. After one visit we are considering moving to the area down the road. The people are so nice and it’s so beautiful !!!!!!!!!

Peaceful Location

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay here. The property is beautiful and felt like we had our own little slice of wilderness to enjoy. The hiking and stream were great. Everyone enjoyed feeding the trout and looking for frogs. Great view from the fire pit to enjoy your evening hot chocolate or morning coffee. Susan and Mike were there to meet us and provide clear instructions about everything. They also provided some great hiking suggestions. Fun weekend!
