Overview

About the property

Secluded Mountain Ranch, Serene, Peaceful, Beautiful & ONLY 15 minutes to Cd'A!

This magnificent and spacious home has 6 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. The unique setting of this home is at the confluence of two streams and surrounded by pristine natural beauty to stir your heart. Like a painting come to life with romantic rock bridges, quaint stone steps and walls, lush pastures, fruit trees, flowers and jade-green ponds; this is a dream come true! This enchanting home is located at the gateway into the vast National Forest. This 150 Acre ranch is surrounded on three sides by U.S. Forest land; 2 1/2 Million Acres extending to Montana and Canada! There are deer, elk, moose, bear, wolves, bald eagles, wild turkeys, and ermine on or visiting this ranch; and we have maintained the property as a wildlife preserve. There are no visible neighbors and this is a place of serenity, peace and complete quiet except for nature!

The two streams are Marie Creek, which has high water in the Spring and early summer, along with several large pools of water and log waterfalls into mid-July. By early to mid-August, Marie Creek goes underground by the ranch. It continues to run above the ranch in the National Forest. Searchlight Creek runs the north-south length of the ranch and in front of the house. Searchlight Creek runs year round and is a perfect creek for children to play in the creek and the pools.

Home is 4,000 S.F with 6 Bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths, 2 Stone Fireplaces and a great Western Decor!

Elk Mountain Ranch was homesteaded in 1908 and the Deed is signed by President Theodore Roosevelt, on display at ranch. The center of the current house was built in 1930, and retains much of the charm of that time period. The later additions are very western and rustic.

This family ranch was offered as a Vacation Rental beginning May 1, 2014 for the first time. The furnishings and décor are that of a high quality, Western motif reflective of the love we have for this beautiful ranch.

The ranch is 150 acres with access into the National Forest. You can pan for gold in the creek! We now have a fire pit and provide firewood for your use! You can bring your Mountain Bikes or Cross Country Skis and stay for a fun-filled vacation summer or winter! We do provide sleds for our awesome sledding hill and snowshoes to use on the ranch or into the adjacent National Forest land.

About Michael Dickson

Elk Mountain Ranch has been in our family for over 40 years. My Dad was a German Artistic Stone Mason as is evident at the ranch. Our family immensely enjoyed and loved living at the ranch. We enjoyed foreign guests who came and stayed at the ranch, and it was such a wonderful experience, we decided to officially offer the home as a Vacation Rental. My parents lived there into their late 80's, as it was such a healthy environment. The ranch is now a wildlife reserve and timber farm. We live a short distance away which is convenient for care-taking the home and property. When you stay there, you have the home all to yourself!

Michael Dickson purchased this chateau / country house in 1970

Why Michael Dickson chose Northern Idaho

Elk Mountain Ranch is one of the most unique and beautiful properties in the Northwest. We found it amazing to feel so remote, secluded and peaceful and yet we could commute into Coeur d'Alene in 15 minutes for Shopping, Groceries, Restaurants, Church, Social Activities, Art Shops, the City Beach, or Silverwood Theme Park. In the photo we are tubing on the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River which is just 25 minutes east, via Interstate 90.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

At Elk Mountain Ranch you can imagine it is 1906 and experience the peace and observe the wildlife just like the first pioneers did! ....If you'd rather golf at the World's only floating green, that is only 15 minutes away!....If you'd like a 'Cowboy steak' that is so huge you can't eat it all, that is 10 minutes away at the famous Wolf Lodge Inn & Steakhouse!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are a family from Kanagawa, Japan who stayed at Elk Mountain Ranch before it was officially a Vacation Rental. We and our three children watched "Little House On the Prairie," and were intrigued with the American West. We contacted the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce looking for a recommendation of a real western ranch to stay at on our vacation. Elk Mountain Ranch was recommended. We stayed for 10 days and it was beautiful, memorable, and the best vacation of our entire lives. The owners even had Western cowboy hats, prairie bonnets and clothes so we could dress up and take pictures. We went horseback riding, hiking, enjoyed the ranch and the easy drive to Coeur d'Alene. It was an experience of a lifetime and we wouldn't trade the memories for a million dollars!!! We still keep in touch with the ranch owners and love them like family!! Thank you so much!

A Beautiful Place, Rich in History

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect place for our extended family of twelve, who enjoys the out doors. We loved it! Mike and Susan were wonderful hosts. Susan shared a lot of her family history which made it even more special to stay there.

The lodge was spacious and quaint due to a series of additions that added rooms in a helter-skelter way, but we thought added to the charm in the beautiful setting. Having six bedrooms (plus a hide-a-bed), and four and a half baths was a definite plus. There was plenty of room for us to all be together in the main room or find refuge in a quieter place if needed. The kitchen space allowed several to work together for our meals. The cupboards were well stocked for us to use if we desired/needed. The dining room was adequate for us eat together as well as spread out a board game in the evening.

Those who liked to target practice enjoyed being able to do so. Feeding the "pet" trout in the ponds was a delight to many in our party. The "little people" thought the play room was a treasure trove of delights, and the costume closet provided much amusement.

The setting is beautiful, pressed up against the timbered mountains of National Forrest land. There is room to roam, ride bikes, find trails to access the NF.

We would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a quiet get away and loves nature.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Mike and Susan were wonderful hosts. They have thought of everything you might need. The ranch is beautiful and spacious. More than enough room for the 13 of us. You never have to leave the ranch to find something to do. Feeding the trout was a big hit for everyone, as was spending time around the bonfire. We would definitely go back..What a great experience!

An Amazing Vacation At Elk Mountain

  • 5 of 5

This vacation was unlike any other we have taken... and we have taken many many vacations! The pictures do not do the property justice... It is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. The home on Elk Mountain is furnished beautifully, the kitchen is fully stocked with everything you can imagine and the views from the Great Room will leave you speechless. I only wish I was back there now with a morning cup of coffee in the Great Room looking at the mountains and wildlife. Mike and Susan, the owners, went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable, enjoyable and memorable. We did venture into the city and spent some time on the lake but we would have been content to stay on the mountain and enjoy the beauty around us. Many amazing hikes both easy and challenging, streams to sit in or just relax under any of the many shade trees on the property. I could go on and on but simply said... you will love everything about Elk Mountain Ranch!!

Wonderful place for a family get together! We had an amazing time...

  • 5 of 5

Our entire family, kids and adults alike, had such a great time staying at the ranch! We took walks, played in the creeks with kids, watched the deer and the turkey come in everyday. Feeding the big trout was a treat for all ages! We had plenty of space to spread out in the house and come together and play games both in the house and outside in the field. The kitchen had everything we needed and it was so nice not to have to stress about what we needed to cook for everyone. We're hoping to make a return visit in a few years! Thanks for sharing your wonderful ranch Susan & Mike. The East Family

Absolutely Stunning!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 11 stayed for a week, and had an absolutely amazing time! The view and property are stunning. "Do Not" expect a 5 star hotel because it's an old property, but this is a home, and vacation you will never forget. I loved waking up every morning to a cup of hot coffee, and sitting in living room listening to the creek, waiting for family to wake to start our day.

If you have kids that like to play hide n'seek, they will have a blast!! This house has more hiding places than I have ever seen.

We did experience a couple of mice and spiders in house, which crazy as it sounds made it exciting for my grandsons. Nobody should ever be upset if they see them while staying there because you are literally in the wilderness which brings things out~~it's "called nature".

We didn't get lucky enough to see deer or bears, but did see bald eagles, and wild turkeys. The pond with row boat and ability to feed the fish on property was so much fun.

The entire family thought it was so neat that there was dinner bell at bridge, and because my 4 year old grandson could not reach it to ring it, Mike surprised us and put an extension on string so my little guy wouldn't be left out.

We had a bon fire nightly while having s'mores, great quality family time.

I 100% recommend this as a vacation stay and if I could afford it, would be there yearly at a minimum!!!

Mike and Susan were so wonderful, took time to show us around and were a true delight.

This is a property I would be like Mike and Susan are, by treasuring it, and put all my love into it.

I LOVED OUR STAY!!

Thank you Susan and Mike for allowing me to have memories that will last a lifetime, and for being two wonderful people I'm proud to have met....

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review, we're always glad to know our guests enjoyed staying at Elk Mountain Ranch! With all the welcome guests this time of year, the multiple doors into the house often get left open which is why we are always vigilant about the unwanted guests who come in from the outdoors. We do strive to send any of them on their way! We always enjoy meeting our guests and making their stay here as pleasant as and memorable as possible. Warmest Regards, Susan and Mike
