My Name is Riona-Connolly Green, and I am a retired second-level teacher. I live here in Bru na Mara with my husband and my dog "Spot." We have a son and daughter who work elsewhere. My family started running Bru Na Mara as a guest house in 1933, and we re-opened as a high quality totally renovated Self Catering Accommodation centre in 2003.
While teaching offered its own rewards, in helping young people reach their potential over the course of the school year, operating holiday accommodation is very different in that every week new people arrive, usually desperately in need of a rest and relaxation, and at the end of their stay they leave transformed for the better.
Riona Connolly Green purchased this apartment in 2001
I grew up in this house, and running this business has given me the opportunity to meet and welcome people from all over the world, of all nationalities, and allowed me to share with them the incredible beauty of my native area which I so cherish.
I have travelled all over the world in the course of my life, and it's very rare to be able to find a place like Connemara with six entirely different types of landscape within minutes of each other. (Coastal, Mountain, Bogland, Lakeland, Fjord, Meadow)
So it is a matter of immense pride that people from all over the world come to the area I grew up in to enjoy it's unique culture and extraordinary natural beauty.
The air in Mace Head is so pure that it is the site of one of the most important atmospheric research stations on the European continent. The air comes directly across the Atlantic, and supports a wide variety of fragile and rare plant and lichen species. The proliferation of wild flowers and plants is extraordinary.
The Views from the premises include Mountains, Islands and Coast, and at night time, you can see stars. In fact you are so far from sources of light pollution that you can see all the stars. You are right on the very edge of the entire European landmass where it is possible to get away from the world if only for a short time, and get back in touch with the beauty of nature.
I can guarantee you, that wherever you are reading this, that the Carna area is about as different from where you are right now as it's possible to get. And Bru Na Mara is the ideal place to stay to enjoy this unique part of the world.
What an absolutely beautiful, spotlessly clean, and cosy apartment. My wife and I stayed one week and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves; beach walks, countryside drives and visiting county Connemara. Rionna is a delightful knowledgeable and lovely host. We highly recommend this place.
My Fiance and I stayed here for 3 nights over Christmas. We had the little apartment on the side which included a beautiful bedroom and en suite bathroom as well as a fully equipped kitchen and a really cozy living room. The apartment itself was immaculate and also decorated for Christmas for us! Riona went out of her way to welcome us and made sure we were taken care of the whole time. The location was fabulous for short trips around the Connemara area, I'd definitely recommend a car! The views were stunning in every direction.
Bru Na Mara is a very nice place for enjoying the sea, the air and the surrounding beautiful nature of Connemara. It is a beautiful and cosy location at the end of a little road. The seaview with some little isles is salving.
We felt very comfortable and being welcomed by Riona. Her information helped us to discover local places and to plan day trips in Connemara. We liked walking along the coastline behind the house and loved it beeing sometimes guided by her cute dog. We liked the landscape and the atmosphere very much, especially the bog with the sheeps, the coastline and the mountains. We enjoyed the daytrips to the Island of Inishbofin and a walk on Diamond hill or to some sandy beaches and also to Galway-City.
We appreciated cooking at home and to buy and taste the local products and also to go out to Pups and to enjoy the delicate seafood.
Staying there gave us great impressions!
A very nice place to stay. Very quite and picturesque. The hostesses are very hospitable. The rooms are comfortable and clean. Wi-fi is available. Probably, it is a little bit hard to find the way to the pier if you are traveling by the car.
Very highly recommended!
Very good holidays in bru na mara. Riona is very nice. All was super!!!!
I agree with all has been said in the reviews and don't want to repeat anything.-Having been here with my family in 1973(!) already and 5 times again since then I love the place, feel at home with the Connolly - Family. And I love the rough weather. " It is a soft day today" I heard when it had been raining. A few hours later the sun was very hot and we went to the beach close by. I loved to be shipped to the MacDarra Island by boat or stay at the harbour and listen to the quietness. Or walk - the last time with by own bike- around. When I had been here in 2009 after a long break the only thing I have missed was the smell of the turf - fire like in former times, already when you came to Rosslare by ferry-boat.
