I live in New York City and work at the United Nations where I am responsible for environmental programs for developing countries related to biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and mitigation, forest protection and sustainable energy.

The oceanfront cottage on Bowen Island listed here was passed down to me from my grandparents who bought the property in 1918 and my wife, Joan, and I bought the property next door on the water and built the first 'Platinum' green house on the island in 2009. So we have both a modern house and a vintage cottage to make available here.

Since my work and travels prevent me from spending as much time on Bowen as I would like, I am listing them on (website hidden) to make them available to others.

Jan Stevens is the manager for both these properties while I am away from Bowen and I will pass on requests for rentals to Jan.

Why they chose this property

My grandfather, Samuel Mack Eastman, discovered this spot on Bowen Island in 1918 when he came to recuperate from an injury sustained in World War I while serving in Canada’s army. He liked it so much that he bought this acre of oceanfront property for $300 that year! Mack and his wife Antonia built a cabin here and my mother, Isabelle, spent her early summers here from the 1920s on, and all of the summers of her later years. This was my mother’s favorite spot on earth. The ‘new’ cabin was built around 1950 and it continues to serve us well.

I have been coming to this place on Bowen since the age of two, and this is where I found my appreciation of nature, ocean swimming and interest in international affairs and environmental issues. I was also inspired to build my career at the United Nations to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather who devoted himself to world peace in the League of Nations in the 1920s and 1930s.

Subsequently, my wife, Joan, fell in love with this spot as deeply as my mother did, so we bought the acre next door to my grandparents property and built the first “Platinum” certified ‘green’ house on Bowen, which was finished in 2009. It is our other listing, the Eastman Waterfront Retreat.

In a few years this property will have been in my family for 100 years so our connection to this place is strong. Incidentally, as early notables in Bowen history, Mack and Antonia Eastman are referenced in both books on the history of Bowen Island and even in the historical section of the 2012 Bowen phone book!

What makes this property unique

Our Historical Waterfront Cedar cottage is only 9 minutes from Snug Cove by car or a 45 minute walk. It is easily accessible with a 2WD vehicle. For guests that are looking for privacy this property is secluded, surrounded by trees and on the water's edge. A peaceful retreat to the past.......a wonderful place to reboot your soul.
