About the property

Secluded, Romantic, Family Friendly And Cozy, Last House In The Valley.

Enjoy the privacy of the outdoors and be close to La Crosse for convenience! Here you can 'get away' from the world and enjoy the cozy and secluded comfort of the country. This is the last house in the valley and offers a serene view of the coulee. Deer and turkey will find their way to the field below the house and you will have the perfect sitting area to watch them feed and play.

In the winter, pack your cold weather wear and go for a walk along the creek or up the logging trail for a view of the coulee below. Bring your snowshoes for a winter walk. Or if you prefer, go sledding on the hill in front of the house. (sleds provided). What ever you choose to do, even if you stay indoors, you will enjoy the serenity of the valley.

If you like to ski, we are located just a few minutes from Mt. La Crosse.

If you are snowmobilers, the state trail is located less than a mile from the house and you can drive your snowmobile to the trail or drive your trailer to the trail, park and hop on from there.

We have a scenic cross-country ski trail, that is approximately a one mile loop.

In warmer weather, you can enjoy walks along the creek looking for fish and beavers or take a walk up the logging trail and see if you can spot a deer or other wildlife. Pack a picnic lunch and sit down by the creek and enjoy the sounds of water flowing over the rocks and the other sounds of nature.

At night, sit around the fire pit to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

If you want to venture out, La Crosse, Coon Valley, Westby and Viroqua are just a few miles away and offer various fun activities, dining and unique shopping. Or if you are looking for a drive and shopping through Amish country you are close to that as well. La Crosse also offers a wide array of dining venues, theatre, live music, art galleries and bars.

We are excited to announce that we added a new Bedroom and a good sized beautiful new bathroom in the lower level. The total for our home is now 5 Bedrooms with 2 King and 3 queen beds. There are three bathrooms, one in the master bedroom and also one on the upper level and the third large new beautiful bath in the lower level.

About Joan and Jerry

Joan and Jerry are local to the area and recently purchased the house and 10 acres with is attached to the family's original 100 acres of land. The property is will be drawn to look out the windows at the view! Being new owners...we are committed to making this a gem of a destination! We personally take each stay seriously and our goal is to make it the best experience possible for you.

Joan and Jerry purchased this chateau / country house in 2013

Why Joan and Jerry chose Central Wisconsin

This property is located on Joan's original family homestead. Joan's great, great grandparents came to Wisconsin from Germany and moved into Chipmunk Coulee in the late 1800's. Her Great Grandparents farmed this land and lived in the coulee, raising 7 sons. The historic hay barn that is located next to the house was built by her great grandfather and a neighbor in the early 1900's. The 10 acres of property was originally part of the family land and we are happy it can stay in the family! This land has been in the family for years and has provided us all with a lifetime of memories! We look forward to sharing the magic of Chipmunk Coulee with you!

What makes this chateau / country house unique

What is unique is that our last name is Unser, which in German means 'our'. We hope you enjoy your stay at Unser Haus!

Beautiful Private Location

  • 5 of 5

Everything was great for our stay except the weather. Due to the weather we didn't get to have a fire in the fire pit, but the garage was a great place for our group to gather. We had 9 adults and 8 kids under 18 for our weekend. The location is amazing and the kids enjoyed exploring the woods and the creek that runs through the property.

The house had just about everything we needed and we ended up bringing things that we didn't need to because it was provided. I would recommend asking Joan before bringing larger items just to make sure they are not available at the house. For example, we brought a flat, pancake type griddle, but there is one at the house so we didn't need to.

The place is a bit tricky to find and your GPS may lose signal before you get there. Make sure you write down what road to turn on etc, just in case you lose the signal on your GPS or cell phone.

Overall great stay for our family group for a good price.

Great space and calm setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a large group of 17 (adults and kids) and we had a great time! There was a bedroom for each family and plenty of space in the 2 living areas, kitchen and patio for "hangout" space. The kids loved the yard and it was nice to be away from it all but still close enough to go into town for certain things. Great visit!

Beautiful Home in a Peaceful Setting

  • 5 of 5

To start with, Joan & Jerry are great to work with. Communication was fast and easy.

Jerry met us at the house, showed us around, and shared the history of the property.

The setting is beautiful, and we enjoyed watching the deer, birds and raccoons. You feel so private there. It is a great place to unwind and relax.

The house itself had lots of space, and was beyond clean. We had to improvise in the kitchen once in awhile but nothing major, and there were plenty of plates, silverware, and glasses for our group. A nice set of pots and pans, cookie sheets, baking pans and a crock pot for cooking. There were basic spices, but a little flour or sugar would have been nice, but we had thought ahead and brought some. The beds were very comfortable, but we all wished we had our own pillows, but they are such a personal choice. The common areas were welcoming, but we seemed to spend most of our time around the dining room table which is very unique. We loved the Lazy Susan!

We had an operator error with the TV downstairs, but Joan came out first thing in the morning and fixed it for our guys. Cell phone reception was a little iffy, but we were on vacation. Because of rain, we didn't spend much time outdoors, but there was a lot of room for games.

If I could I would give Joan, Jerry and their beautiful home more stars! Thank you for sharing it with us. It was an honor to stay there. We hope to return again some time.

Great Place for reunion

  • 5 of 5

Only downside was the weather, but none of our activities were rained out. The flat-landers in our group just can't get over the views and the winding roads. They were intrigued by the "smoke" coming up out of the trees after the rain. Also the southerners complained about the cold. I think that is for us complaining about the heat when we are in the "south". Highly recommend for groups of 10 or smaller. The only downside was the gas grill which probably needs some new burners in addition to the starter.

We must be notified about the gathering at the time of booking, and also need to know the number of people that will be attending.
