About the property

3 bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath, Close to Hiking, Crafts, and Berea College, Sleeps 6-9

The home sits on top of a hill, features passive solar design with windows spanning the entire south side of the home with loads of natural light. The very open floor plan includes a great room (living room, kitchen, and dining areas), family room, and 2 full baths on the main floor with two loft beds (a queen and a king) that overlook the living and family rooms respectively. There are two additional bedrooms, also on the 2nd floor, in between the two lofts, with a total of 5 twin beds, along with a 1/2 bath.

This unique and admittedly quirky place is loaded with nooks and crannies. If you are looking for a fun place to stay, with beautiful views, close to hiking and outdoor activities, and within a short drive to lots of central Kentucky destinations, this is it!

About Shannan and Nathan Rome

We are the daughters of Richard Martin, a green designer/builder in the Berea area for more than 30 years who had a reputation for building high quality energy efficient homes.

Why Shannan and Nathan Rome chose Berea

Our family home, aka the 'Big Hill House' was the first ever built by Richard Martin, a green designer/builder in the Berea area for more than 30 years who had a reputation for building high quality energy efficient homes.

The house was the first house that Daddy ever built and our childhood home. Given the unique features of the house and the obvious sentimental value of the home, we have decided to hold on to the house as a vacation home for our extended family and and have recently completed a series of renovations to the house so we are excited to share it with you!

Beautiful Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay! We were 6 adults, 2 kids and a baby. Things were a big snug for us as some of the adults had mobility issues so needed to stay on the pull out sofas, but nothing that wasn't easily overcome. The cabin is lovely and clean. Plenty of towels!

We loved how open the floor plan was in the main area because even cooking everyone was together and involved. We spent tons of time just hanging out in the living area. It was wonderfully comfortable. We cooked every night. As is typical using someone else's kitchen there were a few improvised uses of items, but overall it is well outfitted. I would suggest bringing your own sharp knife if you plan to chop any large number of veggies.

Great girl's weekend retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin has real character and an interesting story. It was a comfy, warm, and welcoming place to relax. It's close to town but far enough out so it felt like a retreat. We loved sipping our coffee outside in our pj's. There was ample private sleeping space in the upstairs loft that was accessed by stairs that were a bit hard on old knees. The living room was a great gathering space but we could not figure out how to turn on the ceiling fan. We would certainly return again.

Very nice.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our family getaway in this cozy house in the Kentucky hills! The home had plenty of room for all 7 of us, and our 3 fur babies . The house is fun and amazing and fit our family's needs with everything handy that we could want. The beds are also quite comfortable. Hiking, canoeing, put-put golf and batting cages, shopping all within close distance. We brought our dogs and all 3 enjoyed themselves tremendously!! We'd love to come back again.

cute house

Nice clean house - lots of blankets & pillows!

We were pretty turned off & disappointed when we pulled up & the yard wasn't mowed, the grass was pretty high so our kids & dogs couldn't play in the yard too much.

Owner's Response: We're very sorry that the grass detracted from your stay. We contract with a lawn service that is supposed to mow every other week, which is typically sufficent to keep things looking decent. Our housekeeper made us aware that the grass had gotten long, following your stay. As you may be aware, there's been lots of rain here lately. Apparently, this has not only put the lawn service behind (as they couldn't get out to mow), but also caused the grass to grow really tall. Please know that this situation is atypical for us. Again, we are very sorry!

Cozy and full of character!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at The Big Hill House. We love all the little eclectic details about this house. It has so much character.

Shopping in Berea is unique...everyone in my family found something they loved(including my kids). We hiked to Anglin Falls (very close to the house). We also drove about 40 min to Flat Lick Falls. That was a lot of fun!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review and the return visit, Holly! Flat Lick Falls is still on our list of places to visit, but you've inspired us to go sooner rather than later.

Wonderful Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough about this wonderful, cozy cabin! It is a well-loved family home that we felt welcomed into. It was absolutely the perfect place for our girls-getaway. Plenty of beds, bathrooms, and hangout space. We loved the open floor plan, the wood burning stove, and the luxurious bedding on all of the beds. The house is secluded enough but still easy to get to. Don't miss the Anglin Falls hike or Tater Knob Pottery! Thank you Rome family for an awesome stay!
