Half Baths1
Space 157 m²

About the property

3 bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath, Close to Hiking, Crafts, and Berea College, Sleeps 6-9

The home sits on top of a hill, features passive solar design with windows spanning the entire south side of the home with loads of natural light. The very open floor plan includes a great room (living room, kitchen, and dining areas), family room, and 2 full baths on the main floor with two loft beds (a queen and a king) that overlook the living and family rooms respectively. There are two additional bedrooms, also on the 2nd floor, in between the two lofts, with a total of 5 twin beds, along with a 1/2 bath.

This unique and admittedly quirky place is loaded with nooks and crannies. If you are looking for a fun place to stay, with beautiful views, close to hiking and outdoor activities, and within a short drive to lots of central Kentucky destinations, this is it!

About Shannan and Nathan Rome

We are the daughters of Richard Martin, a green designer/builder in the Berea area for more than 30 years who had a reputation for building high quality energy efficient homes.

Why Shannan and Nathan Rome chose Kentucky

Our family home, aka the 'Big Hill House' was the first ever built by Richard Martin, a green designer/builder in the Berea area for more than 30 years who had a reputation for building high quality energy efficient homes.

The house was the first house that Daddy ever built and our childhood home. Given the unique features of the house and the obvious sentimental value of the home, we have decided to hold on to the house as a vacation home for our extended family and and have recently completed a series of renovations to the house so we are excited to share it with you!

Unbelievable Find!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Shannon and Nathan's house was one we will always remember fondly. The house is exactly as it is described; however, only when one is on site and actually stays in the home can the space truly be appreciated. It was loaded with loving care, pictures, family items, artwork, toys, videos, books, etc., we wanted to stay forever! While visiting Berea for the first time was really cool, and hiking in the area was loads of fun, staying at the Big Hill house and enjoying the light and the views of the mountains was what we enjoyed most of all. Thank you both for sharing your father's legacy with us!

Well laid out for large families, multiple generations.

  • 3 of 5

Lots of amenities from baking dishes to comfortable beds and a swing. Grand kids loved exploring all the hidden places for reading, napping or a good talk. Grown ups enjoyed open kitchen/living/dining so we could be together during meal prep. A lot of road noise diminished the pleasure of sitting out to enjoy the mountain view and the stairs were very steep. The Ark Encounter will certainly bring us back to Kentucky for future visits. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. We're glad you enjoyed your time at the Big Hill House, despite a few of the house's perceived shortcomings. You can definitely hear cars from the road, which sits below the house, when you are outside. And the stairs are definitely on the steep side, which we are sure to mention to each and every guest, in case that presents an issue.

We loved the house - it had all the essentials for our stay! The house is super cute and furnished well! They even had dog bowls for our furry family member!! :) Very clean, nice linens, comfortable and homey! Thanks for a great experience! Berea is an adorable little town -we enjoyed the shops in town and hiking nearby!!

Great spot for a getaway

  • 5 of 5

We just left this house and cannot say enough about how much we loved it!! The house is so unique, comfortable and well equipped. This house had everything you could possibly need. The beds were also very comfortable. You can tell that this is a house that is well loved and cared for by its owners and I am so thankful that they share it with the rest of us. Will definitely be back!

Beautiful cabin is a great home base!

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! We wanted to visit Berea and do some hiking, and this was the perfect home base for both. The cabin was so lovely and clean and well-equipped--it had everything we needed. The view from the master bedroom was beautiful, and there are so many beds! We hiked the Pinnacles and Anglin Falls--both of which were challenging but doable for a relatively fit beginner. Also don't miss Sunday brunch at the Boone Tavern Restaurant--it's amazing. If we're ever in the area we will definitely stay again. One word of caution: some local raccoons stole a pair of our hiking boots off the front porch, so don't leave any valuables there!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay at the Big Hill House. And thanks for letting us know about the boot stealing racoons! We'll see if we can't round them up and find them a new home, far away from the house.
