About the property

5 Bed, 4 Bathroom, 2 Kitchen Home With Pool And Dramatic Ocean Views

A Home as sensual as its setting - avant-garde minimalist architecture (Metropolitan Home of the Year) in the heart of Manuel Antonio!

Villa CalaLuna

Perched on a steep tropical hill-side above the Pacific Ocean, just minutes north of famous Manuel Antonio National Park, this stunning architectural gem showcases an inspired modern spin on Jungle Geometry: The Villa's spine - 2 immense almond beams - is supported by a double row of massive columns that march through the tri-level 'great room' to a panoramic window-wall, marking the increase in ceiling height from 14 - 24 feet, as the space steps down.

From the entrance porch, strikingly sculptured stairs either levitate to a lofty mezzanine and further up to the master suite and sun-deck above, or widen as they flow down to the kitchen/dining level and the living room below - always inviting to double as seating. The vast floor-to-ceiling glass facade opens to a water-edged living terrace shaded by 3 smartly suspended sails, while high cedar doors attend the side-wing-suite on the right side of the living room level.

CalaLuna was designed to be in tune with its tropical landscape - open to the sea breezes, the scent of ylang ylang trees and the ever-changing light of its rainforest environment. Rooms extend onto expansive balconies, patios and hammock-strung terraces, while the magnificent infinity pool is carved into the hillside and embedded in lush tropical vegetation - shimmering sea views from everywhere.

White walls and sand-colored polished cement floors are offset by playful splashes of color - sun-drenched orange, reds and fuchsia - black granite kitchen counters and richly grained native woods.

A haven completely calm and serene contrasting the abundance of the jungle’s greenery - boldly simple in its furnishings and always sophisticated in its fusion of honest materials and textures - concrete, steel, glass, granite, slate, flagstone and plenty of local hard-woods.

Minimal in decor and yet rich in space, light, ideas and imagination.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family of 6 brought my mom to Costa Rica to satisfy a lifetime dream of hers to visit the area and see the wildlife. We all were absolutely thrilled and amazed at the animals we saw right at CalaLuna! The second day of our stay we had no less than 25 squirrel monkeys on the back porch taking slices of bananas right out of our hands. We saw a baby sloth the very first day and he stayed in the same location outside the master bedroom all week. You will meet Eddie, the huge Spiny Back lizard that lays in the middle of the driveway all day long. Be wary of the capuchins -they look very friendly but when I saw one rip apart a coconut, I immediately gained a new level of respect. Do not worry about the driveway -it is a minor issue compared to the incredible views / wildlife / amenities that CalaLuna offers.

Can't beat the location.

The house is fantastic and the views unbeatable. The pictures are spot on. The location is great as you can get to anywhere you want quickly and a car isn't necessary as the bus is easy to pick up and get to town or the beach and Angie didnt mind calling cabs whenever needed. Our favorite part was the pool which is a jungle hideout and a great spot to see toucans, monkeys, sloths, etc. Chef Marisol is amazing and you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal for food. We had a couple slight concerns to start but Angie and Thomas are there whenever you need them and everything was resolved quickly. The drive away is steep as others have noted but nothing unbearable by any means. We hope to make it back!

Pura Vida

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed in Manuel Antonio many times but Villa CalaLuna along with the jungle and ocean view was amazing. Postcard views. You honestly feel like you are in the middle of the jungle and no other homes or building are around you. The pictures of the house on VRBO are exactly what you will see upon your arrival. The house has a modern design. Good amount of steps but we all achieved our fitness goal by noon. If you are looking for a relaxing, quiet, jungle, wildlife, amazing house than this is for you.

Scarlet Macaws flew over the house every morning and back over in the evening. If your a night owl, hang out on the terrace and listen to the howler monkeys until sunrise. A few capuchins stopped by one day for a quick visit and a peek through the doors. Squirrel Monkeys passed through at least twice during our stay. That’s just a few of the animals that are easily seen from the house. DON’T FEED THE WILDLIFE!!!

We had the chef for our arrival and they were worth every penny. The food was as good if not better than most of the local restaurants and huge portions. Enough for the next day. Highly recommend!

Can’t wait to go back.

We just returned from a visit to paradise!!!!

The house is architecturally beautiful. 3 air conditioned bedrooms with waterfall showers you will not want to get out of. The views from all the terraces are mesmerizingly beautiful. The sunsets are beautiful beyond description and we eagerly awaited the next one although we never wanted to wish away our exciting adventure filled days.We are a family of 8, 5 adults and 3 boys ages 9, 13 and 16 and every one of us loved all the expeditions from ziplining to river rafting, jungle hikes etc.. that we went on.

Thomas answered each and every question we had as soon as we booked, and when we got there Angie took care of everything from a

chef prepared meal which was fabulous, to all of our activities fromhandling every and any request from planning activities to troubleshooting house issues. She is unflappable and amazing and cheerful.

We all loved the property, but found the driveway challenging both up and down . This is not a property for those with young children or people with physical disabililities. There are no railings on the stairs and the drop offs are considerable.

Aside from that it is a dream come true and we all had an amazingly wonderful time. Pura Vida!!!!!

Pure Bliss

We knew going into this that this home was going to be absolutely beautiful. There were only 2 couples and we could have easily has a few more join us. I have to say this experience began long before we arrived. We worked with Thomas who got us set up originally and then Angie from the moment we got there until the moment we left.

We did take the Van Transportation to the home the night of arrival. We highly suggest this as we were tired from the flight and our driver took us to have dinner and got us to the home safely. The driveway is something to contend with for sure.

Angie and her son met us the evening we arrived to show us around, give us all of the information we needed and was there every moment we needed her. She arranged for a rental car to be delivered to the home and picked up when we were done. She gave us wonderful recommendations for places to see and eat. We had someone there taking care of the pool and grounds often as well as Angie!

Now to the actual house & Manuel Antonio. There is nothing that could have disappointed us about this home, the location or our surroundings. From the moment we walked in we were in complete euphoria. There wasn't a day that we did not get up, have coffee, enjoy the view and use the pool.

My husband and I took the upper bedroom which has the most amazing views ever. The sounds from the Howler Monkeys the first night was a bit intimidating but once we saw them and understood their bark is louder than their location we enjoyed every moment of it. No sloths at the house while we were there however we had a group of Squirrel Monkeys join us on the upper deck and play on top of and all around every level of the decks and awnings a few times.

We took advantage a few nights of having our dinner cooked for us. The chefs that joined us those nights were very friendly and the food was amazing. There was plenty left over for the 4 of us from two dinners for about 4 days of lunches and some dinners. We tried a few restaurants in the area and went to the Marina a time or two as well. We also drove to the small town of Dominical, this is an absolute must. We met and spoke with a few couples who have moved there and started their own businesses or are retired from the States or Canada. This little town was just what we were looking for.

We explored Manuel Antonio Park with a wonderful guide and enjoyed 3 different beaches close to the house. We will return! So far this has been the best!

Lovely home with superb views of the ocean. Spectacular architecture unlike anything one encounters in the USA. Impeccable concierge service. Not child friendly or handicap accessible

We had an exceptional time at Costa Rica!! Starting with this gorgeous house. It is centrally located and walking distance to restaurants and shops. Angie arranged all the excursions and restaurant reservations. She had an itinerary prepared for us upon our arrival. She is super helpful and accommodating. Definitely have Marisol cook dinner at the house, her cooking is better than most of the local restaurants. So much wildlife to see from the house, we saw a sloth, monkeys, hummingbirds and all kinds of beautiful birds. We will definitely return to Costa Rica. One of our best family vacations!!
