Overview

About the property

Sleeps 13 5 bedroom cottage in Culver

This large historic lake cottage was first built as a boathouse and fishing lodge around 1900. It sits right on the lake on a large piece of property in the middle of the historic East shore. Comfortably sleeping 13 people with 2 large dinning tables accommodating 20, it makes a wonderful space for families or groups of friends.

Lounge on the large screened-in porch, swim, sun, fish and play from the dock in waist-high waters, or dock your own boat if you like. We have a boat lift we can make available for rent if you like as well. We have water toys, floats and a kayak for your enjoyment. The lake is great for skiing and tubing, and the sailing & the sunsets can't be beat!

There is also a new cottage that shares the property and pier, and it is available for rent and sleeps 8 (see Ball Family New Cottage in Culver listings). You might want to rent both for an even larger gathering!

About Janet Starkey, Rich Starkey

The property was first bought by our grandfather William C. Ball from Muncie, during WWII while my father William (Bill) Ball attended Culver Military Academy and my Aunt Lucina Ball Moxley mourned the loss of her first husband to the war. My siblings, Julie, Chip & John Ball and myself, Janet Ball Starkey, purchased the property in 2009 from our father who owned and maintained it for over 30 years. We all have a long history of wonderful memories growing up spending our summers at the lake.

Janet Starkey, Rich Starkey purchased this house in 1943

Why Janet Starkey, Rich Starkey chose Indiana

My children, along with my siblings' children have also grown up with fond memories on the lake. I can honestly say all the cousins are more like brothers & sisters because of this lovely space that was provided for them during the summers. It's been one of the most valuable times spent together with family that I treasure dearly. I hope it would be so for your family and friends as well! By renting it out we hope to off-set some of the costs to provide future summer times at the lake.

What makes this house unique

From the large lawn, you can walk straight out to the dock with no steps (unlike many of the lake houses that have long walks down to the lake). Swimming is easy and is waist or chest deep at the end of the dock. Swing or nap in the lake side hammock & stargaze from the dock on our amazing clear night skies!

Family Reunion 2017 - Metsker Smith Story Axelrad Carpenter Brennan Rose Bayard

  • 5 of 5

The house is lovely. Large dining room table - for family to gather and play games. Plus an additional large family room with an additional table to play games. Great screened in porch. Rope swing was a big hit with the kids. Raft was the perfect hangout for adults and kids.

Hope to do it again sometime.

We enjoyed boating, riding bikes to town and playing cards at the long dinner table. The owner was just a phone call away when we had questions. Thank you!

Great Cottage for Family Gathering

  • 5 of 5

We filled this historic cottage with grandchildren and parents. Our goal was to bring them all together for lake based recreation and it was a great success. The cottage site is low on the lake so that there are no steps to negotiate. The shore is a low seawall with a sand/gravel lake bottom in which the kids willingly played. The big hits were the tree swing, the lake side yard for games, the upstairs dorm/library where the kids all slept, and of course the lake with the tubing and skiing. The house is spacious and the main room and especially were well utilized. Boating is great on Maxinkuckee and the east side is excellent for the sunsets. The exterior has been recently redone and gives an excellent appearance. The interior is vintage and comfortable and the owners were quick to address the minor issues we had and have plans to continuously update. Bottom line, a great place for a group to gather on a wonderful lake

Beautiful Historic Home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the main Big) home for a weekend retreat while visiting our son at Culver. The little cottage (not so little) is in back of main house - both homes are beautiful and well decorated.

There was a great breeze off the lake so we opened all the windows and doors to enjoy the fresh air.... we didn't need to use the AC.

The accommodations are elegantly rustic in design.... visibly pleasing to stroll through the historic halls and rooms!

Just bring beach towels, toiletries, hairdryer, food, napkins and (additional) paper towel ... they provide good soap and towels in all bathrooms and beds were made up with clean linens and blankets.

As for the kitchen towels and all essentials are provided as well, just be conscious that you may need to improvise if cooking for large group; there were pots for boiling, fry pans and smaller sauce pans for use but on an electric stove. We also used the bbq (coals), theremay have a gas grill but we found this one first. We found what we needed just keeping looking in the many cupboards. There were plenty of plates and serving pieces but as I'm writing this review I wanted to suggest to the owners that they want to add labels to cubbiards and drawers so people know where to look for items as there available and it would be a helpful guide for people to return items back to their proper place. You may need more silverware for larger parties but there is plenty of seating areas!

I'm sure if you let the owners know of your plans they will make sure you have what you'll need or they will let you know what to bring as they are very gracious people and readily available for questions which was wonderful!

We rented a boat for more fun on the lake and played in the water, it was easy to get in and out of lake for swimming and boat use.

Can't wait to rent again! Great place to relax and enjoy yourself but if you feel like grabbing a bit in town there's plenty of options, we loved Cafe Max and the Rootbeer Stand!

Historic home, plenty of room, beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for Culver Alumni Weekend 2017 with three families, all of whom brought small children. The house was the perfect size. Everyone was comfortable and could get away from the mele whenever they needed to. There are no fewer than three fridges, so plenty of room for beverages of all kinds. The building has miles and miles of historic character and is chock full of literature about the home and the area. The location is close to everything, especially the marina. The owners are wonderful hosts and made sure we were comfortable. I really can't say enough good things about this house.

Winchester Mystery House!

  • 4 of 5

If you are familiar with the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, you will know what I mean. This house is a bit of a maze of rooms...clearly there have been additions and remodels over the years. The interior has not been updated and some rooms do not have closets. One room (the big one upstairs with two beds) doesn't have a door. The large 4-room enclosed deck bedroom can only be accessed by going through the big upstairs bedroom. So, an unconventional lay-out. When we arrived there were several windows open and it was freezing cold. We were able to get the various heaters going and it did warm up eventually. I bet this is a really great house during warm summers, with lots of beds for a large group. Everything was clean and nicely welcoming. Thanks for having us.

Owner's Response: Dear Carolyn, I so regret hearing the cottage was cold no your arrival!! I know that was a chilly & wet April weekend & my housekeepers washed the windows & left a couple open on a warmer day, I greatly apologize! And yes our family's cottage was one of the original fishing lodges built in the late 1800's additional bedrooms were added in the 1930s. The large room you mentioned with the high ceilings and fireplace is the library. When our growing family exceeds the 5 bedrooms & 15 people we do have an additional bed in the library to accommodate our children. I do hope you had a good time despite any inconvenience! Warmly, Janet

Every Saturday morning there is a farmer's market in the quaint little town of Culver. Don't fail to miss the old root beer drive in, a Culver favorite for over 50 years! Not far from the area is Napannee, an Amish community with many shops and a wonderful restaurant
