About the property

Sleeps 13 5 bedroom cottage in Culver

This large historic lake cottage was first built as a boathouse and fishing lodge around 1900. It sits right on the lake on a large piece of property in the middle of the historic East shore. Comfortably sleeping 13 people with 2 large dinning tables accommodating 20, it makes a wonderful space for families or groups of friends.

Lounge on the large screened-in porch, swim, sun, fish and play from the dock in waist-high waters, or dock your own boat if you like. We have a boat lift we can make available for rent if you like as well. We have water toys, floats and a kayak for your enjoyment. The lake is great for skiing and tubing, and the sailing & the sunsets can't be beat!

There is also a new cottage that shares the property and pier, and it is available for rent and sleeps 8 (see Ball Family New Cottage in Culver listings). You might want to rent both for an even larger gathering!

About Ball Family

The property was first bought by our grandfather William C. Ball from Muncie, during WWII while my father William (Bill) Ball attended Culver Military Academy and my Aunt Lucina Ball Moxley mourned the loss of her first husband to the war. My siblings, Julie, Chip & John Ball and myself, Janet Ball Starkey, purchased the property in 2009 from our father who owned and maintained it for over 30 years. We all have a long history of wonderful memories growing up spending our summers at the lake.

Ball Family purchased this house in 1943

Why Ball Family chose Culver

My children, along with my siblings' children have also grown up with fond memories on the lake. I can honestly say all the cousins are more like brothers & sisters because of this lovely space that was provided for them during the summers. It's been one of the most valuable times spent together with family that I treasure dearly. I hope it would be so for your family and friends as well! By renting it out we hope to off-set some of the costs to provide future summer times at the lake.

What makes this house unique

From the large lawn, you can walk straight out to the dock with no steps (unlike many of the lake houses that have long walks down to the lake). Swimming is easy and is waist or chest deep at the end of the dock. Swing or nap in the lake side hammock & stargaze from the dock on our amazing clear night skies!

Wedding & Events & parties are possible when renting both properties

(512710 & 559346) and consent from the owner.

Additional fee @ $200 for additional 20, $500 for additional 40 people, $1000 for maximum of 100 people

Perfect location for a family summer getaway.

  • 5 of 5

This lakeside cottage is a perfect gathering place for a family. Lots of room in the yard behind the house for a badminton game, croquet or any activity that requires some space. Off the front is a good size patio to watch beautiful sunsets and all the activities on Lake Maxinkuckee. Easy access to the lake for adults and kids alike. Each of the guest bedrooms is a nice size . The master bedroom suite is substantial with a fireplace and large bathroom. Off the the master is a sleeping porch perfect for guests of all sizes with a great view of the lake. I could go on and on about how wonderful Aubenaubee Lodge is for a family vacation. Swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, you name it.

The town of Culver is lovely with some very good restaurants like Papa’s and the Lake House.

In addition to all of the space is the history of this charming lake house and the family who have spent many many summers here beginning in the early 1900’s who clearly care for this family treasure. The owners are so helpful and instantly available should you have any questions. All of my family agreed that we could not imagine spending a vacation on the lake in any other spot. It was simply perfect. I know we will return to this very special place.

Unique Lake House

  • 4 of 5

There is so much history in this house, and it definitely has that cottage look and feel, which we enjoyed. We loved our stay here. The close proximity to the dock and water (no steps) was great. We brought a boat and some SUP boards which kept us busy and out on the water. Our family has a history in Culver, so it was especially nice to stay in an original Culver family cottage and have easy access to the lake. The sunsets were beautiful, too.

Very Quaint & Roomy

  • 4 of 5

We rented this property for our daughter's wedding. It was a very small wedding and was an absolutely beautiful place for their wedding! Inside and out it is charming! They were married out by the lake and had their bride-groom dance on the dock with the back drop of a stunningly beautiful sunset! It was more than plenty roomy enough for those of us staying there - 8 adults and 2 kids. The owners were there when we arrived and were extremely welcoming and hospitable. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that we rented the 3rd week of October and given that we weren't able to enjoy swimming/lake activities. So I wonder if the rates should be somewhat reduced for "off season".

This home was literally a museum. We felt so fortunate to have come across your family heirloom!! We will always remember this trip. Thanks SO much, Janet, for allowing us to share your home for a couple days. My cousin painted a picture for me of a Ball Jar and it says "Having a Ball"...................The lake was gorgeous and so was the weather. Thanks, again!

Owner's Response: Wow, Thank you all so much! We love it when our guests can share what we love about our family's cottage! And thank you so much for taking such great care of the cottage while we were in San Francisco for our daughter's wedding! You are welcome back any time! Here's a story written about our cottage by a journalist we hosted a couple weeks ago if you're interested: Blessings, Janet

We enjoyed boating, riding bikes to town and playing cards at the long dinner table. The owner was just a phone call away when we had questions. Thank you!

Great Cottage for Family Gathering

  • 5 of 5

We filled this historic cottage with grandchildren and parents. Our goal was to bring them all together for lake based recreation and it was a great success. The cottage site is low on the lake so that there are no steps to negotiate. The shore is a low seawall with a sand/gravel lake bottom in which the kids willingly played. The big hits were the tree swing, the lake side yard for games, the upstairs dorm/library where the kids all slept, and of course the lake with the tubing and skiing. The house is spacious and the main room and especially were well utilized. Boating is great on Maxinkuckee and the east side is excellent for the sunsets. The exterior has been recently redone and gives an excellent appearance. The interior is vintage and comfortable and the owners were quick to address the minor issues we had and have plans to continuously update. Bottom line, a great place for a group to gather on a wonderful lake

Every Saturday morning there is a farmer's market in the quaint little town of Culver. Don't fail to miss the old root beer drive in, a Culver favorite for over 50 years! Not far from the area is Napannee, an Amish community with many shops and a wonderful restaurant
