Sleep Peacefully In An Old Stone Country Church House In The Pa Dutch Region.

Bedrooms 1
Space 1,100 sq ft
Property type cottage

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4 With Loft, Kitchen, Sitting Room, And Patio

Enter your private retreat across the same sandstone threshold that parishioners did since 1862 when the building was first built. The 2 foot thick stone walls block out the sound and stress of the world outside while you relax in the sitting room in front of a cozy fire. The main sitting room/dining area and small kitchen is decorated with a colonial touch. Mt. Culmen is the perfect place to stay for a few nights or a few weeks while you explore the area. It is ideal for those who like the welcoming feel of a bed and breakfast but want a higher level of privacy and independence. We prepare a light breakfast in advance, for guests to enjoy at their convenience. We live nearby, though not on the same premises. The bedroom with queen size bed, adjoining bath and a private sitting room are all located on the first floor. A unique spiral staircase leads to the loft overlooking the main sitting area. The two single beds provide sleeping accommodations for two additional guests, for a total capacity of four people. Children must be over the age of 10. Hand hewn, charred and rugged, a cross hangs above the fireplace as a testament to the Source of solace found by the original visitors to the building. It served as a church from 1862 until the mid-1960's when it was converted to a private residence. We purchased it at an estate sale in 2007 after a fire nearly destroyed the structure. After a complete renovation, we are delighted to share Mt. Culmen with guests from around the globe who come to be refreshed.Listen to the wind whisper through the pine trees while sitting on the flagstone patio. The old blacksmith's shop across the walkway gives a secluded feel to the westward view across the Weaverland Valley. Amenities include: Refrigerator, range/oven, microwave, coffee maker, DVD and CD players, alarm clock, gas stove, heat and AC, antique push-button light switches, paved driveway, patio table and chairs. There are three steps in the walkway, one step up into the guest house and the bathroom is handicapped accessible. At Mt. Culmen, sleeping in 'church' is required!

About Ronda

We both grew up in eastern Lancaster County just a mile from Mt. Culmen. Just a generation ago, our families traveled the neighborhood in horse and carriages, farmed the land and cut firewood in the hills. My husband has always been fascinated by local history, so the old stone church-turned-guest house fits our interest. I enjoy trying new recipes to share with our guests for their breakfast. Mt. Culmen is really a labor of love for us. Hearing how others have been refreshed, renewed and re-focused during their stay is what motivates us. Just as the building itself has been restored to a new use, so the cross above the mantle reminds our guests that God can restore broken and burnt-out lives and relationships.

Ronda purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Ronda chose East Earl

Mt. Culmen overlooks the valley where my husband's family has lived for generations.Since the 1700's when his relative and inventor joseph shirk created the first grain cradle. We had talked for a few years prior about setting up a guest house nearby our home. We even mentioned this specific property as we would drive by it regularly. When it came up for sale after the fire, we purchased it and began a total reconstruction, culminating a year later with an open house. We like things that have a story to them, and this property certainly fits. It has a small adjoining cemetery, presenting some unique challenges to the land acquisition and lot consolidation!

What makes this cottage unique

Most of all, Mt. Culmen provides a peaceful place of respite both to our guests and to us while we are maintaining it.

Country church turned cottage refuge

Loved staying here! Felt right at home. It was beautifully restored, maintained, and furnished. Also good eating with the homemade granola, oatmeal, fresh fruit and bagels. I would definitely stay here again!

We truly enjoyed our short stay in the Old Stone Cottage. After visiting the Lancaster area for many years we have found a restful , relaxing cottage that is truly worth a return visit. The owner was very attentive to our needs and the breakfast sandwiches were very, very tasty.

Loved it!

My college roommates and I spent the weekend antiquing the Adamstown Extravaganza. This cottage was a perfect homebase and provided a quiet retreat after a long day of shopping. I will be back!

A Spiritual Retreat

  • 5 of 5

The guest house is a perfect place for reflection and renewal - absolutely no distractions whatsoever! The cottage is charming and you are surrounded by spectacular beauty from the many pristine farms and countryside in the area. So very quiet and peaceful - a true labor of love by Keith and Ronda in the restoration of this old church! It was a bit of “heaven” on earth!

The mt. Culmen guest house is your own private cottage away from home. It is nestled among tall pine trees at the edge of a fertile valley farmed by industrious amish and old order Mennonites. Carriages and bicycles traveling past bring reminders of simpler times. Local attractions include the hope well furnace national historic site, a nearby amish bake shop, antique shopping in church town, historic pool forge park and covered bridge, shady maple smorgasbord and farm market and more. A small country church is within walking distance for Sunday morning worship. Outlet shopping at many of the nation's largest retailers is within easy driving distance in lancaster and reading. Located within an hour's drive to Philadelphia, Harrisburg or Hershey, mt. Culmen is the perfect retreat after a busy day exploring the region's many attractions.
