About Kit & Phyllis Barnett

Phyllis was born and raised in Homer where her parents owned and ran the Inlet Trading Post, now the Bunnell Street Arts Center. Kit hails from Scotland where he worked as a groundskeeper and gardener. His expertise has been a great boon to the Homer property! Recently retired from their lives of working in Bush Alaska during the winter months, Phyllis as a teacher, and Kit on the Maintenance & Operations crew, but always returning to Homer in the summer to enjoy fishing, gardening, hiking, and boating with family and friends.

Kit & Phyllis Barnett purchased this apartment in 1987

Why Kit & Phyllis Barnett chose Homer

The property, with its close proximity to town and the high school, its views and homey feel was the perfect location to raise a family. The home was purchased from the original owners and builders, Paul and Phyllis Banks who had raised their family here. 'The house has always had the feel of a home, it is comfortably cozy with wonderful light and the classic Homer views. This is what we want to share with visitors - a great place to stay while visiting and enjoying the delights of my home town.' ---Phyllis

What makes this apartment unique

Kit is constantly working on the grounds surrounding the home. It is an ever evolving mix of the practical and the beautiful, the groomed and the wild. Shooting Stars and Lady Slippers explode in the Spring; Poppies, Delphiniums, and Sitka Roses grace the gardens in midsummer; in August, raspberry bushes are loaded with berries.

The entry door for the Garden Retreat opens onto a garden of strawberries and Forget-me-not flowers while large white Pushki flowers crowd around the perimeter of the property.

All of this is set against the blues of the Kachemak Bay waters and Kenai Mountain's snow-capped peaks.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Taken from a guest review left in the apartment:

Thanks so much for letting us be your first guests at your Garden Retreat! We had a fabulous time, your place was most definitely a retreat for us - the bathrooms were great (having 2 was perfect), your kitchen so clean and easy to access, and the beds/sofa bed were extremely comfortable and accommodating for us. Thanks again for creating such a beautiful haven for my in-laws, husband, 2 dogs, and I! The view was spectacular and we even had a upfront & close view of a moose cow and her calf! We will most likely be staying again the next time we're here in Homer!

Great little place, very clean and comfy

  • 5 of 5

Loved staying here. It was really nice to be able to bring our dog along as this is a pet friendly rental. The first thing I noticed is how impeccably clean the whole place was. Comfortable bed and had streaming service in the living room. Would highly reccomend to anyone staying in Homer.

Cozy Homer hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Spacious and very well-equipped one bedroom unit. The unit has lovely views from its vantage point on a hill. We really appreciated the two full baths and washer & dryer. The wifi was speedy and we put the full kitchen to good use--love the gas stove & tea and coffee provided by the owners.

It was good.

  • 4 of 5

The house was sufficient for our needs. We could not locate the bicycles nor the outside trash container. I would recommend this property to others.

Great little spot

  • 5 of 5

Nice views, clean and simple, super comfy bed. Everything you need, plus a washer and dryer if it's an extended stay. Easy access to town. I'd have to imagine it's much better than any hotel at a similar place, plus you can bring your dogs. Only issue you might encounter would be if somebody is staying in the upstairs unit, as it might be a little noisy.

Would definitely stay there again.

Garden Retreat property offers easy accessibility to all the delights Homer has to offer. And Homer has so much to offer in addition to The Spit. . . year-round. The many fine restaurants are a definite must when exploring our town - a true culinary experience. There are several art galleries that offer unique, not-to-be-missed shopping opportunities with offerings from many of the local artists for which Homer is becoming famous. Old Town features new arts of both the culinary and visual kind, plus a bit of Homer history for you to absorb as you walk between the Old Town Art Gallery, the different eateries, and Bishop's Beach. There are multiple opportunities for beach walks . . . Diamond Ridge Hike ends on a beautiful and secluded beach when you might want some quiet time. At the Garden Retreat you are 100 yards away from a paved bike path that will take you through town and out to the Spit, or a vigorous walk up East Hill for some eye-popping views all the way to Mt. Augustine .
