'WINNER - Best Vacation Rental, Berlin'

Downtown city landmark near Checkpoint Charlie

Best location if you want to reach most attractions on foot.

The house, a protected monument of Kreuzberg in one of the most famous streets in Berlin, is firmly in the grip of uniqueness. Gutschow House, built in 1895, an important work of historicism (Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance), is due to the elaborate façade design, its location and its history, the symbol of southern Friedrichstr. It is the only hotel in this area that 100% of the second World War II has survived. A protective spell, perhaps because it was here from 1910 to 1990 the Mecca of the magicians through the magic headquarters of the world-famous magician Conradi-Horster?

In 2006, the Greens also conjured up a unique opportunity for the then tenants: the right of first refusal for the entire house, 21 apartments. But why has only a mother with two children made use of this right and pledged to pay an amount of millions that she did not have within 30 days? How could you stand up to gentrification? MyBerlinStyle is this moving Berlin past and present.

Reviews that ignite our passion:

'Feel the history; Love the Comfort 'by Curious Nellie:

'Six of us - women' d'un certain age'- stayed here at the beginning of this winter and werewolf all delighted with our choice. The building is beautiful Itself, redolent of end of empire flourish, while the apartment, with the gracious proportions of at Earlier era is warm and welcoming. We loved the beautiful original wooden floors, decorative plasterwork on the the bedroom ceilings, the sense of space, as well as the terrific shower in a stylish, modern bathroom. Our internal homemakers thrilled to the quality and solidity of the linens and general fittings (and dreamy beds). The kitchen is really well equipped so we did not just eat breakfast there but some prepared meals too, though there are some good restaurants close by. The main room and the bedrooms are really roomy, not even with 6 of us did it ever feel crowded. Marion, our host in Berlin, which welcoming and gave some really useful tips on eating out and things to do, and his welcome package which chosen with care - organic and delicious.

The location is great! so close to Museum Island did it makes a very comfortable stroll before a trip to the unmissable Pergamon. But if walking's not your thing then the wonderful Berlin public transport system is accessible only 2 mins away at the Cook Street stop. Another visit you must make is to the Jewish Museum Which is so only 2 mins walk from the building. This is a great city for history and culture fans, so get booking! you will not regret choosing this apartment as your base for your explorations. But first get fit and keep your luggage minimal; there are two flights to walk up. ' (Dear Curiousnellie, Apartments 11 and 12 have an elevator since 2014.)

Great Berlin Location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in this flat (Friedrichstrasse 17 Unit 11D). The location is excellent: easy walking distance to great retail and restaurants around the Gendarmenmarkt and the Kochstrasse U-Bahn station for anywhere else in Berlin you want to go. The flat is very spacious which allowed our two grown children to have their own bedrooms. You will be very comfortable here! The owner's rep is on site and will help you with any needs. The only warning is that there is no elevator, so carrying luggage up 3 flights of stairs can be a challenge. However, I highly recommend this location!

Worth the hike

  • 5 of 5

As we climbed the stairs to the room we dreaded our decision but that had to do with being 70 years old and suffering jet lag, but once we reached the apartment we fell in love. It was very spacious with a nice living area. The bedrooms were wonderful and we caught up on our sleep. We highly recommend this property to anyone but want to remind them there is no elevator. We would gladly stay there if we ever return to Berlin.

Nino and Marian were incredible hosts. We enjoyed every minute of our stay.

  • 5 of 5

Apartment is clean, comfortable and spacious. We stayed for a week and still has things to do in Berlin. Location is really good, just a 5 min walk from U-Bahn and within walking distance of many sights. Nino and Marian were very good hosta and were helpful in every way.

An Unusual Experience!

  • 3 of 5

Property is clean and centrally located. There is a very steep climb-up 3 flights. Bathrooms are huge. The furniture in the common area is uncomfortable and the trash room was crowded with boxes and trash. The beds are very comfortable.

The washer and dryer is more than adequate but there is an extra charge for each use. The kitchen area is sleek with nice appliances but

NO soaps or paper goods are present upon arrival -not even a dish towel. The stove was not unlocked for use.. We relied on the Internet to find instructions. The building has so much character but the apartment lacks a decorative touch. If English is your language you may have some difficulty dealing with the owner. Please read your contract VERY carefully.. The owners fees are yours to pay.. We enjoyed our stay in Berlin but this rental experience was difficult in comparison to accommodations in other countries.

Lovely apartment and great location--just make sure you can handle the stairs and heavy door!

  • 5 of 5

Hi -- first of all, the photo with the wood-patterned ceiling that I see in this review form is *not* the apartment we rented; we stayed in 11d and I believe this is 11c (which shares same suite entrance as 11d). Anyway, the apartment we stayed in was also beautiful and spacious--very contemporary/sleek--and the host, Marion (husband of Nino who is the wife!), was super nice and helpful. A few nit-picky cautions: (1) you can't stay here if you are not in good physical shape and can climb many flights of stairs with your suitcases--this is actually 3 landings up from the ground-level entrance; (2) these rental units of Marion and Nino are on the 2nd (really 3rd) level but everyone below is an owner--and they don't seem to take kindly to the presence of the tenants. We tried to be really, really quiet, but I know we still got the neighbors below us angry our first night when we started to try to unlock their door instead of ours. (3) the doors and locks system is difficult--front gate from the street is extremely heavy, and I needed the strength of two of us (or at least more than me) to get it open--and then there are three more doors to get through, all of which are kept locked and which you need to unlock and *lock* using the key (very time consuming/cumbersome). (4) the kitchen is not really set up to do real cooking there, as there are no oven mitts or kitchen cleaning sponges, for example (we bought the sponges and paper towels to serve our immediate needs though). (5) trash system is confusing if you don't read German, even though I must say Marion tried to explain to us when we first checked in. Overarching comment is that the place is very beautiful and in a great location (it was especially great for us to be staying just a block away from my daughter's NYU dorm), and the owners are super nice and friendly and helpful, and this is best for a family without young kids or elderly parents to stay in --given the doors and stairs situation. (Also there are only two keys, so you have to coordinate well with the other people in your party given that keys are needed not just to get in but also to get out!)

Came with group of 7, rented 11a & 11d. Clean, easy access, nice.

  • 4 of 5

Property is in questionable neighborhood but located 10-15 mins from nice area, shopping, restaurants. Came to run Berlin Marathon. Walking distance to & from start line.

Another unit had a late night loud party the night before Marathon and owner did nothing to shut it down. Be ready to pay additional tax once you're checked in.

Owner's Response: The guests first informed us next day about the party. We will stop any party that after 10pm disturbs our guests. Please do not wait, call us just minutes after is sure that the noise was not done by mistake. It is the first time in many years, that this happen, but there is no excuse to it. We apologise. The house rules are for everybody. As online stated, all our guests that are not traveling for business reasons, have to pay city tax.
