Overview

About the property

Between lake and river, sleeps 2-6, hot tub on a large terrace

Herrukot, our holiday home built in 2015, is located in a gorgeous isolated location right on the lakeside. The house contains two separate bedrooms, each with very comfortable beds that are 90x200 cm in size, a bathroom with a floor-level shower, underfloor heating throughout the house, living/dining room with a pull-out sofa bed for two, and a completely equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, a ceramic-top stove (4 hobs), and an oven. With a floor area of 66 sq.m, it offers a relaxing vacation. Wi-Fi is available at no cost, as well as bed linen, bath towels, and dish towels. The icing on the cake is the 60-sq.m wooden terrace with its own hot tub and a fantastic view of the lake, mountains, and the Hekla Volcano. The house is somewhat isolated, though because of its ideal location in the Southern Region, it is great for winter stays. The Northern Lights are a completely different experience as there are no lights from nearby houses. Our farmhouse is just 400 m away, you can certainly ride out from our farm. We're happy to help if you have any questions about your vacation. We have plenty vacation planning tips! We put a major focus on ensuring that your individual wishes are fulfilled, and are happy to help plan your excursions!

About Renate Hannemann

Our German/Icelandic family has lived on the Herridarholi farm, some 400 m from the holiday home by the lake. We run a guesthouse there during the summer, and offer riding tours. Our agricultural operation runs year-round, with sheep, horses, and dairy cows.

Renate Hannemann purchased this house in 2015

Why Renate Hannemann chose Iceland

Since Iceland is worth a visit even outside of the summer, we decided to offer vacations year-round as well. That's why we built a holiday home on the prettiest part of our 400-hectare farm, and so our Herrukot holiday home was born.

What makes this house unique

The isolated lakeside location allows for a relaxing vacation, especially when combined with the central location and the good access road. The house is so spacious and comfortable that even spending a day indoors when the weather isn't good is a fine holiday experience. The hot tub during a snowstorm or under the northern lights is an unforgettable experience!

The washing machine makes a family vacation easier, especially when travelling with small children. The view from the house is uniquely beautiful, right over the lake and the expansive landscape. You'll see the Hekla Volcano and, on a clear day, the peak of the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. The isolated location means that the Northern Lights are especially beautiful! Bird watchers will delight in the many bird species on the lake. The hot tub is a relaxing option for all our guests. Horseback riders can use our farm as a point of departure for their rides, and take long tours during the summer months.

Heaven on earth!

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived at the space we couldn't believe our eyes! The views are beautiful beyond compare. The house itself is clean, warm and designed beautifully! We had everything we needed in the kitchen, and the cookware was very nice.

The floor here is heated so walking barefoot, (which is customary in Iceland!), is a pleasant experience!

We can't reiterate enough, how beautiful the views are, and it is heavenly to soak in the tub while watching the northern lights, or to feel the wind flow from the north. You can also watch the sun set, and rise from the tub...sigh!

And the horses! Wow....

We really hope to return, as Herrukot feels like home to us now.... ❤️

Quaint little house with great views.

  • 5 of 5

Well stocked kitchen, unfortunately we did not use it as we were out most of day. Very comfortable beds. Centrally located to get to south Iceland attractions. Had a great time and would stay here again.

Great house at an even better location.

  • 5 of 5

The directions prior to arrival were good. And the house was easy to find. The house is clean, cozy and warm. In The hottub there is a great view on the night sky with minimum lights in the surroundings. Shops were nearby and all the tourist attractions were easy to get by car. We are deffinatively coming back to this amazing place.

  • 5 of 5

Spent six nights at this property and will certainly return in the future. The cottage is very clean and comfortable with everything needed for self catering - including a well stocked larder!

It is set in an idyllic location with picturesque views from every window.

Fabulous hot tub - ready for use at any time.

Well located close to lots of attractions.

We had the most relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Selfoss self contained cabin

  • 3 of 5

The location was ideal for day trips to Black Beach, The glacier and other wonderful sights such as waterfalls..

There was one clear night but no Northern lights , such a shame .

We went just before Xmas so we didn't see too much as there was only about 4 hours sunlight a day and we used this time to get out and discover the area, but from what we could see the surrounding area of the house was beautiful.

The house itself was well heated clean and neat but lacked ambience / character . The bed pillows were cushions , not proper pillows and very uncomfortable to sleep on. Unusually the cutlery drawer was in the cupboards above your head and I couldn't see into it to select utensils. Additionally, whilst there was a microwave, there were no bowls to cook vegetables , meat etc in it. Also there was no welcoming folder and we had to try and identify the wifi code from the back of the modem which had worn off. A few days later I found the folder under a pile of brochures under the coffee table. The wifi itself was very weak and we had to go in the car to pick up a better signal.

As an overseas traveller I note that leaving a local phone number to ring if any problems is quite useless. To make such a call would cost over £20 pounds, the cheaper alternative , a text may not be answered in time to be helpful.I am not sure how you overcome this issue, but as the house was isolated ,the day's VERY short and the weather appalling ,we were pleased we had no major problems.

The jacuzzi was clean and lovely to sit in.The drying room was helpful.

Overall the house was well maintained but ordinary and not well equipped. You need to do a food shop prior to arriving as there are no close food stores.

Owner's Response: Dear guests, I am sorry that your expectations were not quite fulfilled, and I am wondering if part of the problem were your expectations. Yes, the days are very short here in the winter time and our winter guests come here to enjoy the winter atmosphere, peacefulness and luxury of an open air hot pot in a stunning and private location. You were here for winter solstice, the shortest day of the year! The limited day light is of a special golden quality that some find especially beautiful. Northern Lights are not rare here, but you do need just a little bit of luck with clear skies and solar activity. The information folder which was lying on top of the coffee table when you arrived contains lot´s of helpful day trip information and local information also tells you that we live about 400m away from the house and that you are welcome to come by if there is any problem. Most visitors buy an international plan from their phone company for the duration of their stay. Text messages work more often than not and you could have send us a trial text. There is no microwave oven in the house, which is also apparent from the information on this internet listing, but there is a 4 ring ceran hob and a standard oven. The bed pillows are standard Icelandic pillow size, we are sorry that you found them not to your liking. If you had let us know we could have remedied the problem. As to the isolated location: it is one of the reasons for guest to chose our house: the fantastic views and the peacefulness. The directions we send to every guest clearly state that we recommend you do you food shopping on the way here. As you go on day trips you are always passing through one of the neighbouring villages which all have food shops. We are glad to hear that you had no major problems and that overall you liked the house and its location. We do strive to make everybody happy and ensure that every guest has the best stay they could have. We are always available and approachable at our farm about 400m away from this holiday house by the lake and we will do our best to address any questions or issues that may arise.

Herrukot, our newly-built and comfortable holiday home is situated right on the shores of a large lake. It boasts views of the lake, the constantly-changing landscape and the Þjórsa River, and also has horses! The Northern Lights in winter are simply unforgettable! The location in the central Southern Region means that plenty of great day trips are possible, for example to Geysir, Gullfoss, Thingvellir National Park, the Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull Volcanoes, Reykjavik, the Vestmannaeyjar Islands, glaciers, cliffs with flocks of birds, and the highlands of Landmannalaugar and Thorsmörk. Reykjavik is an hour's drive away, and contains numerous museums, galleries, churches, shopping centres, and whale-watching options. We offer short and long rides (even for beginners) through the constantly-changing landscape, over mountains, and along the rivers and lakes. We make sure our guests get an individual treatment! Our farmhouse is 500 m away and we are happy to help with any questions. We'd be happy to give you a view of the Icelandic farm life. We have 300 sheep, 120 Iceland ponies, 70 cows and steers, as well as cats, rabbits, and a dog. Very family-friendly!
