About the property

Between lake and river, sleeps 2-6, hot tub on a large terrace

Herrukot, our holiday home built in 2015, is located in a gorgeous isolated location right on the lakeside. The house contains two separate bedrooms, each with very comfortable beds that are 90x200 cm in size, a bathroom with a floor-level shower, underfloor heating throughout the house, living/dining room with a pull-out sofa bed for two, and a completely equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, a ceramic-top stove (4 hobs), and an oven. With a floor area of 66 sq.m, it offers a relaxing vacation. Wi-Fi is available at no cost, as well as bed linen, bath towels, and dish towels. The icing on the cake is the 60-sq.m wooden terrace with its own hot tub and a fantastic view of the lake, mountains, and the Hekla Volcano. The house is somewhat isolated, though because of its ideal location in the Southern Region, it is great for winter stays. The Northern Lights are a completely different experience as there are no lights from nearby houses. Our farmhouse is just 400 m away, you can certainly ride out from our farm. We're happy to help if you have any questions about your vacation. We have plenty vacation planning tips! We put a major focus on ensuring that your individual wishes are fulfilled, and are happy to help plan your excursions!

About Renate Hannemann

Our German/Icelandic family has lived on the Herridarholi farm, some 400 m from the holiday home by the lake. We run a guesthouse there during the summer, and offer riding tours. Our agricultural operation runs year-round, with sheep, horses, and dairy cows.

Renate Hannemann purchased this house in 2015

Why Renate Hannemann chose Southern Region

Since Iceland is worth a visit even outside of the summer, we decided to offer vacations year-round as well. That's why we built a holiday home on the prettiest part of our 400-hectare farm, and so our Herrukot holiday home was born.

What makes this house unique

The isolated lakeside location allows for a relaxing vacation, especially when combined with the central location and the good access road. The house is so spacious and comfortable that even spending a day indoors when the weather isn't good is a fine holiday experience. The hot tub during a snowstorm or under the northern lights is an unforgettable experience!

The underfloor heating in the entire house gives off a comfortable warmth even when it's cold out. The kitchen is generously equipped with all the necessities. The washing machine makes a family vacation easier, especially when travelling with small children. The view from the house is uniquely beautiful, right over the lake and the expansive landscape. You'll see the Hekla Volcano and, on a clear day, the peak of the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. The isolated location means that the Northern Lights are especially beautiful! Bird watchers will delight in the many bird species on the lake. The hot tub is a relaxing option for all our guests. Horseback riders can use our farm as a point of departure for their rides, and take long tours during the summer months.

Five of us shared this lovely cabin, and we would not have changed a thing! The location was breathtakingly beautiful and well-placed for day trips to rivers, waterfalls, geysers, national landmarks, and every stop on the Golden Circle. Oh, and the hot tub was heavenly! The hosts were kind and helpful! I look forward to planning a return visit! Thank you!!

Cozy, private location with great access to Golden Circle and Southern Iceland

  • 5 of 5

This property is a cozy, private cabin situated right on a small lake. Between its heated floors and solid construction, we remained quite comfortable regardless of what the weather threw at us. The property has a well equipped kitchen and has a good supply of pantry items left (I believe) by previous guests. The property is well located to serve as a base for exploring the golden circle area and southern Iceland. Despite it central location, it is still remote enough that we were able to see northern lights one night when the clouds cleared. Renate is a thoughtful owner who is clearly committed to her guests having a great experience. I highly recommend this property.

This is IT - everything we were hoping for, and more!

  • 5 of 5

We were VERY pleased with this rental! It was cozy and warm (we stayed in mid-January), very comfortable, well-maintained, well-stocked, with beautiful views, privacy, and was a perfect location from which to explore the Southern Region. We were never cold in the house; the heated floors kept the inside quite comfortable and were wonderful to walk on barefoot! We slept very well in the comfortable beds. We enjoyed the use of the hot tub every night...scurrying across the snow-covered deck to dip in and gaze up at the stars! (Who needs to go to the Blue Lagoon, when you've got "your own"!) On one of our nights there, we got to see the Northern Lights! (Hint: Many factors are involved in whether the lights occur...clear skies being only one factor. If you can visit "Aurora Reykjavik," right next to the "Saga House," in Reykjavik, you'll understand all this a lot more. At the very least, get the app "My Aurora Forecast & Alerts" and pay attention to the KP Index which will tell you the probability of seeing the lights. We saw them when the KP Index was 5. Be sure to look behind the house for them, too...we almost missed them, thinking they'd be all over the sky!) Regarding this wonderful rental property, just a few helpful notes for any non-European visitors who, like us, may not have experienced much European travel: 1) when the property states that there's a "coffeemaker," it's a French press; not something that plugs in; 2) If you like a washcloth when showering, bring your own; and 3) to operate the shower, the left side of the horizontal bar controls the water volume i.e. on/off, and the right side controls the water temp i.e. hot/cold. *Bottom Line: if you're looking for comfortable/well-appointed accommodations, privacy, in a beautiful location and away from city life and lights, with convenience to touring the Southern Region, at a great value, for an unforgettable experience, this place is IT!

Wonderful, warm cottage right on the lake

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 (incl two boys aged 14 & 16) stayed 5 nights in Renate’s cottage on the edge of the (at the time of the visit) frozen lake. It was January and freezing outside, but the house was wonderfully warm and cozy. The living room/kitchen was lovely with the views to the lake. Kitchen was well equippped incl oven and 4 burner stovetop. They seem to have thought of just about everything, including sharp knives (thank you!) Two cozy bedrooms, the 2nd one quite small with two single beds. But the big attraction is the large deck with hot tub, a magical experience to soak in 40 degree water while your head and ears are tingling with the cold and you look out to the lake and up to the stars. No TV, but we found we were only too happy to get away from TV for a week, giving the opportunity to listen to the howling wind and feel the elements for which Iceland is famous, and to read and play games in the evening after our daytime excursions. The internet works fine too, though not super fast. The house is very well located to explore the south of Iceland: easy day trips along Hwy 1 to Vik via Seljandfoss & Skogafoss waterfalls, Eyjafjallajökull volcano and Reynisfjara black sand beach; up to Gulfoss and Geysir & the gorgeous Secret Lagoon at Fludir (natural hot thermal pool); and in and around the National Park. Don’t miss the formidable Urridafoss waterfall just 10mins from the house on a side road back towards Selfoss. Also highly recommend the snowmobile tour from Gulfoss incl a visit to an ice cave with (1 hr drive away). We all loved staying here and would come back in a heartbeat.

Wonderful Stay

This property is amazing. Very secluded and relaxing but has everything you would need. The owners were even nice enough to give us a tour of the animals they have on their farm and it was very cool. Highly recommended. Thank you so much for a lovely stay!

Herrukot, our newly-built and comfortable holiday home is situated right on the shores of a large lake. It boasts views of the lake, the constantly-changing landscape and the Þjórsa River, and also has horses! The Northern Lights in winter are simply unforgettable! The location in the central Southern Region means that plenty of great day trips are possible, for example to Geysir, Gullfoss, Thingvellir National Park, the Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull Volcanoes, Reykjavik, the Vestmannaeyjar Islands, glaciers, cliffs with flocks of birds, and the highlands of Landmannalaugar and Thorsmörk. Reykjavik is an hour's drive away, and contains numerous museums, galleries, churches, shopping centres, and whale-watching options. We offer short and long rides (even for beginners) through the constantly-changing landscape, over mountains, and along the rivers and lakes. We make sure our guests get an individual treatment! Our farmhouse is 500 m away and we are happy to help with any questions. We'd be happy to give you a view of the Icelandic farm life. We have 300 sheep, 120 Iceland ponies, 70 cows and steers, as well as cats, rabbits, and a dog. Very family-friendly!
