Canal Side Apartment

This 2nd floor apartment offers fabulous 180 degree views of the canal and park from the living room/dining area. The Mondriaan is spacious and bright 2 bedroom apartment; the furnishings are of a relaxed contemporary style. There are hardwood bamboo floors throughout. The combined living/dining area has a table that seats four, a large sofa bed, arm chair, and a TV.

The kitchen is equipped with modern appliances (refrigerator, microwave/convection oven, dishwasher, ceramic stove top, and coffee maker) and the kitchen is stocked with all the necessary house wares. There is also a washer and dryer.

Please be aware that the apartment has steep stairs and that there is no elevator in the building.

Canal Side Apartment

The Canal View Apartments are located in the historic Jordan district on a quiet canal in the heart of Amsterdam. Most Amsterdam landmarks are within walking distance and there are many shops and restaurants just around the corner. There is an indoor swimming pool and health club just one short block away.

Canal Side Apartment is located on the second floor and has two bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with a king size bed.

Canal View Apartment is located on the third floor and has 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with a queen size bed.

The apartments are located in a typical 19th century canal house. It is spacious and has been renovated to include all modern conveniences and has a fully equipped kitchen. It is fully furnished and includes all linens. Goose down comforters, and an entertainment system are just a few of the amenities. Historical accents include stained glass en suite doors.

The Apartments offer your ideal home away from home in Amsterdam.

The apartments are a smoke-free environment.

ENVIRONMENT

We have also tried to factor in care for the environment when renovating and furnishing the apartments. Eco-friendly features including roof-top solar water and photo voltaic panels which provide part of the hot water and electricity used, low energy appliances, low energy lighting, double glazing in most rooms, hardwood bamboo floors in the Mondriaan apartment, eco-friendly cleaning and personal care products and some organic food products.

We require a cash damage deposit of 250 euro (per apartment). This will be returned during the check-out in cash.

About Bruce Haase

Dutch-American living in Amsterdam for the past 25 years. I have always traveled a lot for my work and holidays and have seen some great and some pretty bad accommodation. The small attention to detail is often the most important. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and different backgrounds. As I have always worked internatioally, I speak a few languages, including: English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Afrikaans, and some German.

Why Bruce Haase chose Amsterdam

We live on the ground floor and first floor of the building, and have slowly renovated it since buying it more than 20 years ago. The thing I like most about the building is the view. It has the charm of looking out on an Amsterdam canal with a quaint little marina on the other side of the canal, but what's quite unusual is that there's and a small park beyond that.which means that, at least in the summer, we don't see any other buidlings, just trees. This makes it very light and quiet. It feels like the best of both works. Because of course being in the Jordaan, there are literally hundreds of restaurants, cafes and galleries within a few minutes walk.

What makes this apartment unique

The property was built in the 1870's and renovated in the 1930's. The stained glass windows and sliding stained glass doors are all original. But while it maintains the charm of a traditional Amsterdam building, it also has all the modern amenities including double glazing, central heating, a modern kitchen and nice bathrooms. Tastefully furnished. The other thing, important to me at least, is trying to make the buidling as eco-friendly as possible. With a solar water heater, photo voltaic panels, and renovations that always take into account the planetary impact.

My wife, two daughters (13 and 10), and I spent a week in one of the Marnixkade Canalview Apartments in the fall of 2005. It was an absolute delight -- tastefully furnished, perfectly located in a quiet neighborhood within easy walking distance to the sights of Amsterdam, reasonably priced. But what made our stay special was the non-intrusive attentiveness of our host, who assisted us in many ways. Our stay was a perfect blend of the social connection one finds at bed-and-breakfasts and the privacy offered by big hotels. When we return to Amsterdam, we'll surely stay here. We VERY highly recommend it!

very nice apt. not so nice the personnel

All very nice perfect location all ruined by an east european accented lady who came for the check out inspection and found a toilet clogged. It was malfunctioning in the beginning but she retained the deposit. Strange that the first and only thing she checked has been the upstairs toilet as if she might have known...When renting better calculate the deposit as part of the price

Nice stay in the Jordaan

The apartment is as pictured and in a convenient location on the edge of the Jordaan. Bus and tram stops are within one block, and we walked to restaurants and tourist sites easily. The apartment is very clean and well maintained. There are two short flights of very steep stairs - pack light!

Although there is a sofa bed in the living room in addition to the king bed in the bedroom (actually two twins pushed together), it is not a good set up for four people because you have to walk through the bedroom to get to the bathroom and to the kitchen. However, it was spacious for two. It is quiet with a lovely canal view and the kitchen is well equipped for coffee and for cooking.

Reservation and payment procedures were confusing - once the reservation is accepted on Home Away, all further correspondence was with a group called Flat Reservations. However, we kept getting messages from Home Away asking for deposits and payments. We sent a deposit via Pay Pal, and then were required us to bring cash to pay the balance, security deposit and cleaning fee which was quite inconvenient. There was also some confusion about how much we actually owed because Flat Reservations was not including the 95 euro Home Away fee in their calculations (which was 95 Euros). We were also charged an additional 40 Euros cash for "early checkout" (before 9:00). Although Flat Reservations acknowledged that this early checkout fee was not disclosed on the Home Away website, they refused to refund it. I agree with another reviewer who says that this is an ongoing problem with Home Away rentals - owners adding fees and trying to make their nightly rate appear lower than it actually is. Unfortunately these types of administrative issues dampen enthusiasm to return.

Good points: quiet, comfortable, nice view and good neighborhood restaurants and near sites.

To continue with bad points. Stairs are very narrow and difficult to move luggage up two flights. They asked for 250 euro deposit on arrival, and the biggest deal breaker was a 75 Euro charge for early departure.

The stairs and extra charges woul keep me from ever renting this flat. It will also make me aware of hidden costs etc.

The best choice

We stayed in Mondriaan for 2 nights and it was the best decision we made during our whole trip. All the instructions for arrival were well communicated and the host responded to all our questions super fast. The apartment is lovely and homely. It had everything we needed. 5 stars for the cleanliness and attention to details. We would definitely like to return next year.

fabulous gem and great location

Perfect place for our brief city visit.

Very well appointed apartment, equipped with everything we needed. Nicely furnished &very comfortable. Quiet and private. Ideal location.

As many have commented, the stairs are extremely steep - especially if you have very large suitcases (we were traveling through Amsterdam on our way back to the US after a 2 week vacation in Europe, so we had very large cases!). That didn't deter us in the least, but it could be a deal breaker for some.

It really was lovely to stay in an authentic canal property away from the crowds. Easy access to the central areas and we loved to walk through the charming streets where we stumbled upon great restaurants and bars.

My only niggle is having to pay separate cleaning fees and an 'early' check out fee (for an 8am check out) - that seems ridiculous and exorbitant to me and I really do begrudge paying it. I feel that many property owners charge cleaning and other fees separately in order to make their per night price seem such a great deal. I really think they should just include all these extras in the upfront rental cost....that way comparing properties is far more exact and fair.

Would stay again if ever we returned as it was such a perfect location

Mondriaan Apartments are located on a quiet canal in the heart of Amsterdam's historic Jordan district, a vibrant area with many shops and dozens of restaurants within easy walking distance. You can walk to most of Amsterdam’s favourite landmarks and Central Station is about 15-20 minutes on foot.

It is also ideally situated, with tram and bus stops just 50 meters (about 150 feet) away. Tram 10 takes you directly to Amsterdam’s nightlife on Leidseplein (just 5 stops), while Tram 3 takes you to The Concertgebouw (Concert Hall) and many of the major museums (Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum). Bus 18 takes you, in 5 stops, to Central Station and Amsterdam’s emerging waterfront (Bimhuis, Jazz Hall, and Stedelijk Museum).

Although centrally located, the apartments' location across from a park and small marina provide a quiet and natural serenity you wouldn't expect in a city. Bike rental nearby. Paid street side parking is available.
