About Gary Nesseth

I have enjoyed the northern boarder lakes for many years. I was introduced to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area when I was in college. I have enjoyed this unique wilderness ever since. I am 58 and never grow tired of going to this wilderness, each time I go something new to see and discover.

Gary Nesseth purchased this cabin in 1995

Why Gary Nesseth chose Crane Lake

Because this property is a mile or two from the end of all roads it give me the feel of real seclusion but 4 minutes by boat from the bars and restaurants and my car.

It is the gateway entry to the Voyageurs National Park with the endless lakes to explore with my motorboat.

It is also one lake away from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area which is no motor area with mile after mile of lakes interconnected with short portages. It gives me the access to two of the most unique wilderness areas in Minnesota.

We loved the location and views! The dock is not too close to the cabin so you need to haul your stuff a way - uphill - but there is a cart to assist. The path passes very close to a neighboring cabin so you may feel a bit intrusive but the view is a different direction so it wasn't a problem. There is no ladder onto the dock so don't plan to swim there unless you have beach shoes to walk on rocks. The cabin is updated and comfortable. A ceiling fan offered a welcomed breeze in the eating area on a hot day. The beds and patio furniture are very comfortable. The shower is small but functional and the instant water heater was perfect since we didn't worry about running out of hot water for four showers after a day on the lake! The kitchen is well stocked but we had to be creative to open cans because the inexpensive can opener didn't work. The only issue we had was that the Wi-fi was not available for 5 of 6 days. However, the owner was responsive and came the last day to replace the rooter and generously gave us a small reimbursement. I would definitely recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Its always a pleasure to share this special place with my guests. There is three cabins on this point with no roads, boat in only. The Hilltop cabin has the most spectacular views being up so high on the rocks. It is the farthest from the dock, about a block away with a nice path with a slight upgrade. There is a pull cart there to carry your gear. A little work but the cabin and views from the deck will make it worth it.

Our family enjoyed our amazing vacation in the Hilltop cabin. We watched the eagles and enjoyed the sunrises from the deck. The cabin was very comfortable and had everything we needed.

Gateway to the Voyageurs National Park, the only motor boat water accessible National Park in the USA. Also one canoe lake away from the entry to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, miles and miles of interconnected lakes with short portages between, one of the 7 wonders of the world and a must see on your bucket list. Crane Lake Wilderness Lodge is located 2 miles from the end of the roads. Boat access only, with boats available to rent or bring your own. In winter it has the best snowmobiling trails you will find excellent grooming, in the edge the Canada and into the Voyageurs National Park. There is a ice road plowed in the winter to drive to the cabin and unload snowmobiles at the docks. Winter ice fishing is great with Walleye, Northern Pike, White Fish and crappie. One lake over a short distance from cabin is Muooda Lake with excellent winter lake trout fishing. Summer time is absolutely beautiful with mild warm temps. during day and cool evening. The fishing is dynamite. Many fish species also from pike to walleye to small and large mouth bass and lake trout. Pick you species and go to the marina and get the bait. Try the next day a different lake or species. You can go for miles and miles and lake after lake in the Voyageurs National Park. No two days have to be the same. Explore a different lake each day on your stay. The exploring and fishing is endless in this unique wilderness with lake after lake interconnected for you motor boat. No pull out and launch to try a different lake, just take the boat through the narrows to another lake.

The wildlife is incredible. Bald eagles soar over the tops of trees looking for their fish dinner. If your lucky enough you may see an eagle dive to the lake and grasp a fish with the their claws and fly away to their nest. Here the loons call in the evening and their mate calling to come to the Crane Lake. Watch them swim by the dock in the evening. Spruce grouse with walk in front of you when you are on your hike. You may here the wild call of the timber wolf in the distance. Deer, and black bear, huge snapping turtles may be seen. A great variety of song birds for the birder to add to their checkoff. The plant life is also very unique is this special road less area. Many species of wild mushrooms grow here. Blueberries starting in early June till late June are very plentiful. There is nothing more connected to the wilderness then handpicked blueberries from the surrounding hills by the cabin made into blueberry pancakes in the morning. My favorite thing to do with my grandchildren.

The geography is very special also. Many granite outcropping and cliffs present the oldest rocks to view in North America. The rocks exposed here are older then the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Beautiful cliffs and outcropping offer small hike to a great views of this wilderness. Pictographs from the very early natives can be found painted of some of these jagged cliffs.

Swimming is also a great past time here. The water is super clean. Swim off the docks or take your boat a few minutes to a white sandy beach.

The things to do in this unique wilderness is endless, just like the many lakes to explore. Your family will remember this vacation for a lifetime.
