About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Full Kitchen Plus RV site w/20/30/50 On 80 Secluded Acres

TimberWine is a unique, 3-level square log chateau/country home centrally located on a ridge in the center of a secluded 80 acres of timbered hills, prairie meadows, rocky canyon, pond, and wooded draws. The lower patio and lawn level is all yours. Experience a deep connection to the land ('the heart of everything that is' - Lakota Indian), its past, and its beauty in absolute privacy. Hiking opportunities on our own property abound with over a 170 ft. difference in elevation from lowest to highest point. Donna is a member of both a hiking and biking club and is an expert on the condition and topography of trails throughout the Black Hills. 4-1/2 miles to the west lies the Wildlife Loop Road of the 71,000 acre Custer State Park winding through herds of free range buffalo, deer and antelope. Visit the new Visitor Center with 20 minute Kevin Kostner narrated film, location of the buffalo herds, Historic State Game Lodge, Blue Bell Lodge, or Sylvan Lake Lodge located within the park for a refreshing beverage, snack or delicious meal. The Black Hills Playhouse, located in the park, performs during the summer months. Wind Cave National Park, Needles Highway, Mt. Rushmore Nat'l Memorial, Crazy Horse Mountain carving, Keystone, the 1880 Train and many others are only minutes away. To the south are the Mammoth Site, Lame Johnny hanging site, Wild Horse Sanctuary, Evans Plunge-Hot Springs, Angostura Reservoir, Fur Trade Museum, and the historic Fort Robinson where Crazy Horse died. Looking north from our home to the bald ridge and beyond lies the country where Elk often appear. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, site of Wounded Knee and the Stronghold area, is just across the Cheyenne River further east as is the Badlands National Park and Wall Drug. Driving west will bring you to Jewel Cave Nat'l Park, the 109 mile Mickleson hike/bike trail (ranked #7 on the top ten WORLD LIST of best biking trails), Hill City Museum of Natural History, and Gordan's Stockage, the site of the first gold seekers in 1874 - all within an hour's drive. Travel a short distance nortwest to Bear Country, Reptile Gardens, and other tourist attractions. Deadwood, Sturgis, Spearfish Canyon, and Homestake Gold Mine Visitor Center in Lead are only a 1 to 1-1/2 hour drive in the northern hills.

Back at TimberWine, sit on the southeast-facing, lower level patio enjoying a cup of coffee with the sunrise and later with a cold beverage (honor bar furnished) and a campfire as the sinking sun paints the high plains, pond, ponderosa pines and vineyard with stunning beauty. Catch the cattle, donkeys, deer, turkeys and occasional elk as they wander over and around the property grazing, drinking and resting. If you have children they will love feeding treats to Apples & Pinto, the donkeys, Frankie the yellow tabbie (voted Best Cat in the World by 13 year old Lilly). German and English spoken.

About Donna or Les Evjen

Donna and I had a professional contractor build our custom square log home in 2004-05 after we sold our company and retired here from

Duluth,MN. We have three sons and four grandsons who live in Hermantown, MN, Windsor, Colorado and Los Angeles, California. Donna grew up in a small town NW of Chicago and I in a small rural town in southern Minnesota. Donna majored in German at St. Olaf and I majored in English. We both spent time in Germany; Donna on a college experience and I with two years in Bamberg with the Army 2nd Armored Cav. We both love being out-of-doors and hiking around our 80 acre property. Donna is a member of both a hiking club (The Divas) and a biking group. She has hiked and biked nearly every trail in the Black Hills and is an expert on terrain and conditions. We share this land with two donkeys, five chickens, 4 ducks (summer), 2 cats and our JR, Moxie.

Donna spins, quilts, hikes, bikes and is active in our local historical association and book club. She is also a hospice volunteer. I keep busy with the landscaping, mowing, fence and gate repair, and all the general maintenance. I have also volunteered for teaching Junior Achievement and filling 'backpacks' for the Feeding South Dakota program. Together, we spend a good part of the winter preparing next years firewood supply, cleaning up the deadfalls, and building/burning slash piles. We live on the upper two levels of our home and have decided to offer the lower patio/lawn level as a vacation rental.

Donna or Les Evjen purchased this chateau / country house in 2004

Why Donna or Les Evjen chose Hermosa

We fell in love with the Black Hills when we vacationed here several times with our family. An invitation to join a real cattle drive by rancher friends several years ago convinced us to buy some property for the future. We bought this property because of its varied landscape and because it reminded me of the land in Norway where my grandfather came from to America in 1883. There are all four moderate seasons here with lots of sunshine and no mosquitos or other biting insects. We have great views to the southeast, west and north. Deer, elk, antelope and wild turkeys come and go on both ours and the surrounding land.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Our 80 acre property is off a main road in a secluded location offering privacy, peace and quiet after a day of seeing the sights. There is so much variety of terrain here to make hiking and exploring enjoyable. We have timbered hills, prairie meadows, a rocky canyon, grassy draws, our own vineyard and a 170 ft. elevation difference. The Cheyenne River breaks and Pine Ridge Reservation lie to the east, Custer State Park and the mountains to the west, and elk/ranch country to the north. We run cattle in the spring, summer and fall with calving taking place most years. Watching the sunset from the patio, deck or the swing in the west garden while enjoying a cool beverage is both beautiful and relaxing.

Beautiful Black Hills Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Timberwine in June. The property was beautiful, the home was clean and comfortable, and Les and Donna were fantastic hosts. We appreciated Les and Donna for being friendly and helpful, and being very attentive to our needs. Timberwine will be our destination for future Black Hills excursions. We have recommended Timberwine to our friends and will continue to do so.

Peaceful and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for six nights. There is privacy and quiet like you don't experience other places. The owner keeps the place so clean and comfortable. At the end of each day after being gone all day exploring and hiking the beautiful area is felt like coming home to relax for the evening. If you like to eat out then you have to plan to eat earlier while you are out or know that you will have to drive for 15-25 minutes to get to restaurants, but to me the trade off was worth it because you literally are minutes into the entrance of Custer Park.

Perfect getaway for our family of four

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do this property justice! Not only is the yard worthy of a spread in Better Homes and Gardens magazine, but the house is meticulous, spacious, and fully stocked with everything you could need. We spent one day in Custer Park hiking with our two young kids, and the other two days were spent hiking throughout Les and Donna's property. With kids ages 4 and 7, their property allowed for all types of hiking while still being by the house when my 4 year old son decided he was "too tired to walk." :)

Above all of that, Les and Donna are the best hosts! They helped us find fun activities that would be good for the kiddos. They have every map, magazine, and brochure available right there on the table so don't have to go far to know what your options are in the area. My kids also loved feeding their donkeys. My husband and I particularly enjoyed relaxing evenings by the fire, roasting smores, and partaking in great conversation with our new friends.
