About Michael Bighaus

My wife and I really love making our property as beautiful as possible. My wife Rute is from Brazil and speaks three languages, English, Spanish and Portuguese. I on the other hand speak English and a little Spanish and a little Portuguese, when I say little I mean very little however, I am learning.

We bought the property about 10 years ago. We planted all the trees even before we built. After having the property cleared we put down hundreds of yards of cinder soil over the entire two acres. All the trees you now see, were planted just as starts only a couple feet tall, now the Royal palms are from 25 feet to 30 feet tall. Most of the fruit trees were planted at the same time and are producing delicious fruit. At least once a year we plant a couple more different kinds of fruit trees. Because my wife is from Brazil, we have even found a few varieties from Brazil, one is called Brazilian cherry. A couple years ago we added several different varieties of Banana's, some are cooking banana's.

We really hope you enjoy our place as much as we do and will make it like your own when you are here.

Why Michael Bighaus chose Keaau

I am a Vietnam Veteran and years ago I came from Vietnam for a break from the war, we called it R&R, at that time, I fell in love with the weather and the beauty of the tropics. I decided that if I ever had the chance to live in Hawaii I would do it. I have been blessed to find a wife who loves the same things as myself, the beauty of the ocean and a warm tropical breeze. We both love long walks and the ocean is not but a perfect evening stroll. All our neighbors are wonderful who never seem to be in a hurry and find it easy to talk story. These are just a few of the reasons why we chose this property.

Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this cottage away from the city lights and sounds. With the full kitchen we were able to save on groceries by going to a couple of farmers markets. Not far away a little park to watch waves is a nice little treat. We had never used VRBO in the past and found the process easy. We would definitely love to come for another stay sometime!

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

This is a gorgeous property! The grounds are beautiful with the palms and fruit trees. A great place to relax in peace and quiet, yet handy to Volcanoes Park and Hilo. The cottage is nicely appointed with everything you need. Would’ve liked to have had more time to stay here.

This makes our 2nd time using this property and the owners are easy to work with and friendly. If a cozy little cottage is what you're looking for with total privacy then this is the place for YOU! Easy to Volcano and Tide pools, Hilo town, and Mountain View. The property alone is beautiful so you can walk around it and check out all the trees it really gives you the Hawaii feeling of being in a jungle. We Love this place so much that it has inspired us to find our own little piece of Heaven. Thank You Guys!!! Mahalo<3 The Stones

The property was perfectly manicured and the cabin was cute, clean and had everything we needed!

  • 5 of 5

It would be a dream come true for my husband and I to live permanently in a place like this! We happened to go during the rainy winter season, but it didn’t bother us because we loved this place so much. The landscaping is amazing! It was so cool to sit and drink coffee every morning while listening to the wind blowing through the palms, and watching beautiful colored birds going from tree to tree. A neighboring rooster and his hens came through every day and little wild pig ran through one day! And at night the sounds of the frogs was so soothing. It reminded us that the foliage around was full of life. Also everyone we encountered in the neighborhood was friendly. The cabin was super clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Also the town of Pahoa has some really good places to eat. Pahoa Fresh Fish was our favorite! Not fancy to look at, but friendly service and great food! Black Rock Cafe has good breakfast. We would definitely stay here again!

Amazing property!

  • 5 of 5

This was a great little house on an amazing property. Very clean and well maintained. Beautiful yard with a large fruit orchard. While it is a bit off the beaten track, the location worked well for our primary goal which was to spend a day at the Volcano (about a half hour drive), but it is also just 20 minutes to Hilo, and about 30-40 minutes from the Kapoho tide pools which provided some great snorkeling. The nearby Kaleo's Bar and Grill offered one of our best meals on the island.
