About Michael Bighaus

My wife and I really love making our property as beautiful as possible. My wife Rute is from Brazil and speaks three languages, English, Spanish and Portuguese. I on the other hand speak English and a little Spanish and a little Portuguese, when I say little I mean very little however, I am learning.

We bought the property about 10 years ago. We planted all the trees even before we built. After having the property cleared we put down hundreds of yards of cinder soil over the entire two acres. All the trees you now see, were planted just as starts only a couple feet tall, now the Royal palms are from 25 feet to 30 feet tall. Most of the fruit trees were planted at the same time and are producing delicious fruit. At least once a year we plant a couple more different kinds of fruit trees. Because my wife is from Brazil, we have even found a few varieties from Brazil, one is called Brazilian cherry. A couple years ago we added several different varieties of Banana's, some are cooking banana's.

We really hope you enjoy our place as much as we do and will make it like your own when you are here.

Why Michael Bighaus chose Keaau

I am a Vietnam Veteran and years ago I came from Vietnam for a break from the war, we called it R&R, at that time, I fell in love with the weather and the beauty of the tropics. I decided that if I ever had the chance to live in Hawaii I would do it. I have been blessed to find a wife who loves the same things as myself, the beauty of the ocean and a warm tropical breeze. We both love long walks and the ocean is not but a perfect evening stroll. All our neighbors are wonderful who never seem to be in a hurry and find it easy to talk story. These are just a few of the reasons why we chose this property.

Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this cottage away from the city lights and sounds. With the full kitchen we were able to save on groceries by going to a couple of farmers markets. Not far away a little park to watch waves is a nice little treat. We had never used VRBO in the past and found the process easy. We would definitely love to come for another stay sometime!

Absolute Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had been planning our trip to the big island for over a year, two weeks before we left, i changed out stay to Royal Palm Acres home from a lovely place in Leilani Estates. Wow! The day we got on the plane Pele spouted and Leilani was evacuated. The moment we drove up to the property, I realized how lucky we really were!!! It is everthing Hawaii should be. The air was sweet smelling and the sound of the birds and frogs was magical. No fire and ash here. A couple of nights we felt the earthquakes but nothing alarming. This place had everything we could have wanted(minus cookie sheets). It was very clean and no bugs inside. As a matter of fact, the geckos keep it pretty bug free outside too. We spent every morning on the lanai with our coffee watching the sun come up and listening to the frogs chirp. The fruit wasn't ripe enough to pick and eat, but we went to the farmers market in the highway on Sunday to load up. Great place btw. We were here looking to buy a house so we didnt do too many tourist type things, but we found The Tin Shack Bakery on our first day in Pahoa....GO THERE! They rock. By the third day the barista girl (not PC sorry) knew our names and our drink order. As you can tell, this place was like home. Great place to stay all around!!! I plan on telling everyone I know about staying here. This is the spot. Thank you Mike and Rute for making this such an enjoyable place. The air conditioning we were told by many locals that we wouldnt need....totally needed it. Nice touch. Cant wait to come back for a few days while we're transitioning to the island. Mahalo

Beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

What a treat after arriving in the dark to wake up to the beautiful surroundings of this home. Our children loved exploring the plants and trees, geckos and frogs, and it was a relaxing place to spend the first part of the morning outside while we planned our day. Even though it was a studio apartment the four of us (2 adults, 2 children) were comfortable sharing the space together as we didn't need to spend much time inside anyway. The apartment was clean and bright with plenty of space for us to keep our luggage and clothes, and there lots of lounging space outside under cover or in the sun. I was glad to have the advice to bring our own drinking water. Thank you for the perfect introduction to Hawaii!
