Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom With Mountain/Bay View

Caribou Meadows is in a beautifully private but accessible setting, it has new and antique furniture throughout, along with full furnishings to make your visit enjoyable and rewarding. This cabin is immediately adjacent to the owners family homestead (the Kilcher homestead). It was hand built on the site of one of Homer’s original homesteads, by a young woodsman as he was starting a family in Homer. His craftsmanship shows in the original wood structure details throughout the house. With three bedrooms, a sleeping loft to allow for larger parties, two bathrooms, and a modern kitchen, but with more than a trace of Old World and homestead styling, this is a unique and memorable vacation spot. The wildlife in the immediate area is abundant, with moose, eagles, sandhill cranes, porcupines and many others. The cabin is sited in a beautiful meadow, surrounded by forest with room to roam. From the cabin, you can see beautiful Kachemak Bay and the mountains across the way.

The cabin provides modern amenities, has ample space and is a beautiful spot for a family to stretch out and use as a base of operations to explore both near and far. This cabin sits alone on a 10 acre plot 11 miles out East End road but has ready access and is close to the amenities at Fritz Creek (mail, gas, groceries, world-class restaurant and wines and spirits). In the area and beautiful town of Homer is halibut and salmon fishing, the Pratt Museum, galleries, restaurants, groceries, horse back and ATV tours, kayaking, glacier and bear viewing, air tours and much, much more.

It is also within walking distance of a historic site of rich significance, where I grew up with my father, an early Alaskan State Senator and mother a writer, singer and poet and my siblings, in the austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin - the Kilcher Homestead. Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres in which to hike through to the beach via one of only three beach access sites outside of Homer.

About Catkin Kilcher Burton

My family homesteaded Alaska in the late 30's and early 40's. I was born in Basel, Switzerland while my originally Swiss family was touring and my father was lecturing about pioneer life in Alaska. I was raised on the homestead adjacent to this property. I went off to college and joined the Marine Corps. After 31 years of commissioned service, I returned to Alaska and am the Trustee for the Kilcher Family Homestead, 600 acres in a conservation easement. I am a volunteer with the Alaska Humanities Forum and the Civilian Advisory Board to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. I manage three active vacation rentals and love showing the homestead to our guests.

Why Catkin Kilcher Burton chose Kenai Peninsula

This property was built on the site of one of the old homesteads (Bartman) which was purchased by my two brothers (Atz and Otto) and myself. It is adjacent to the historic Kilcher homestead with a living museum, room to roam, and one of three access points to the beach. Surrounded by meadows and forests, the sense of splendid isolation is hard to beat. Try to yodel and you'll hear the forest echoing your yodels back.

What makes this house unique

Within walking distance of the Kilcher Homestead, it offers privacy, but with ready access to fine dining, shopping, kayaking, horse back riding, ATV rides, art, theater, fishing and all the other amazing things Homer has to offer. See the Homer Chamber of Commerce website to see how full of life Homer is. There's a homestead-style (read rustic!) sauna which can be used if you're so inclined.

Very nice

  • 5 of 5

My family of 5 stayed there 3 nights in June. We took a tour of the homestesd and went Halibut fishing out of Homer. The house was very clean with all the supplies you would need. We cooked in, played games and had friends from Soldotna come down one evening. We were in Alaska for two weeks and this home was the best one we stayed in. Thank you for a great place. John & Emily Bohannon from Virginia.

Awesome Drive!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Wish we stayed longer! 2 days was not nearly enough! East End Road has to be one of the prettiest roads to drive in all of America, please be sure to drive all the way to the end of the road. Lots of moose to see along the roads in this area, as well as in the yard! Yep, as close as 12 feet to the house! (Moose Meadows instead maybe?...lol) Got some amazing photos. Fishing was great too! Horse back ride was amazing, it left a mark on our backsides for a few days, but the memories will last a lifetime!

Great location. Very picturesque. Moose sightings in yard! Clean. A+

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was well done, nicely furnished, clean, two bathrooms, accommodated seven of us very nicely. The setting has a secluded feel (about 10 miles outside of Homer), is very picturesque with hiking opportunities to the beach and surrounding area. Wish we would have had more time there to explore the surrounding area. We had two moose sightings in the yard. The last evening we were there, three moose in the yard at dusk. We had a very pleasant stay. Thank you Katkin.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Caribou Highlands in Fritz Creek, AK! It was a beautiful property with amazing views and very convient for our activites in Homer. Catkin was great to book with and very helpful throughout our stay! We were a big group (2 families with 4 adults and 6 children) and we had plenty of room. We could not have asked for a better place to begin our Alaskan adventure. We would all choose Caribou Highlands again!

Enjoyed my stay, the view was absolutely spectacular

  • 5 of 5

I booked a fishing Charter out of Homer and wanted a nice place to stay instead of the dreary motel that we stayed at last time and I wasn’t disappointed; my wife loves photography and we had a visitor that evening and again early morning, it was a Moose with a baby calve; we enjoyed our stay and next time I plan on visiting Homer I’ll see if this property is available again.

Beautiful property, neat cabin

  • 4 of 5

Overall positive experience, saw a moose in the yard, kitchen and laundry well stocked for a large party. A lot of small maintenance issues including the kitchen faucet leaking all over-let the owner know within ten minutes of our arrival but it wasn't fixed w no communication, DVD player didn't work-same story, no effort to fix. People working on roof while we were there (they were really nice). Overall a neat place but seems to need some additional maintenance.

Owner's Response: I am glad the overall experience was positive and that the moose family visited. It was the perfect storm with me being in north Kotzebue with little to no cell or texting service so I apologize for the delay in getting the plumber in to replace the faucet -- I am usually around and stay on top of it. Richard came by Sunday and fixed the faucet -- and I am replacing the DVD player this week. I am so sorry I missed you -- I would have loved to meet you! Catkin
