Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom With Mountain/Bay View

Caribou Meadows is in a beautifully private but accessible setting, it has new and antique furniture throughout, along with full furnishings to make your visit enjoyable and rewarding. This cabin is immediately adjacent to the owners family homestead (the Kilcher homestead). It was hand built on the site of one of Homer’s original homesteads, by a young woodsman as he was starting a family in Homer. His craftsmanship shows in the original wood structure details throughout the house. With three bedrooms, a sleeping loft to allow for larger parties, two bathrooms, and a modern kitchen, but with more than a trace of Old World and homestead styling, this is a unique and memorable vacation spot. The wildlife in the immediate area is abundant, with moose, eagles, sandhill cranes, porcupines and many others. The cabin is sited in a beautiful meadow, surrounded by forest with room to roam. From the cabin, you can see beautiful Kachemak Bay and the mountains across the way.

The cabin provides modern amenities, has ample space and is a beautiful spot for a family to stretch out and use as a base of operations to explore both near and far. This cabin sits alone on a 10 acre plot 11 miles out East End road but has ready access and is close to the amenities at Fritz Creek (mail, gas, groceries, world-class restaurant and wines and spirits). In the area and beautiful town of Homer is halibut and salmon fishing, the Pratt Museum, galleries, restaurants, groceries, horse back and ATV tours, kayaking, glacier and bear viewing, air tours and much, much more.

It is also within walking distance of a historic site of rich significance, where I grew up with my father, an early Alaskan State Senator and mother a writer, singer and poet and my siblings, in the austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin - the Kilcher Homestead. Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres in which to hike through to the beach via one of only three beach access sites outside of Homer.

About Catkin Kilcher Burton

My family homesteaded Alaska in the late 30's and early 40's. I was born in Basel, Switzerland while my originally Swiss family was touring and my father was lecturing about pioneer life in Alaska. I was raised on the homestead adjacent to this property. I went off to college and joined the Marine Corps. After 31 years of commissioned service, I returned to Alaska and am the Trustee for the Kilcher Family Homestead, 600 acres in a conservation easement. I am a volunteer with the Alaska Humanities Forum and the Civilian Advisory Board to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. I manage three active vacation rentals and love showing the homestead to our guests.

Catkin Kilcher Burton purchased this house in 2004

Why Catkin Kilcher Burton chose Kenai Peninsula

This property was built on the site of one of the old homesteads (Bartman) which was purchased by my two brothers (Atz and Otto) and myself. It is adjacent to the historic Kilcher homestead with a living museum, room to roam, and one of three access points to the beach. Surrounded by meadows and forests, the sense of splendid isolation is hard to beat. Try to yodel and you'll hear the forest echoing your yodels back.

What makes this house unique

Within walking distance of the Kilcher Homestead, it offers privacy, but with ready access to fine dining, shopping, kayaking, horse back riding, ATV rides, art, theater, fishing and all the other amazing things Homer has to offer. See the Homer Chamber of Commerce website to see how full of life Homer is. There's a homestead-style (read rustic!) sauna which can be used if you're so inclined.

Very nice

  • 5 of 5

My family of 5 stayed there 3 nights in June. We took a tour of the homestesd and went Halibut fishing out of Homer. The house was very clean with all the supplies you would need. We cooked in, played games and had friends from Soldotna come down one evening. We were in Alaska for two weeks and this home was the best one we stayed in. Thank you for a great place. John & Emily Bohannon from Virginia.

Great cabin, great spot!

  • 5 of 5

I was surprised how much I liked this cabin - the rustic feel offset by very nice antiques and family (homestead) photos made it feel like something special. Bigger than I expected and so private but with easy access on good gravel road. I found it a great way for my kids to have a real taste of living on the homestead while my wife enjoyed the cleanliness, amenities, space and washer/dryer/dishwasher. We both loved the great mattresses - great sleep at the end of some long days going to the beach and on a long horse ride. Had everything we needed and Catkin was great when we asked her for ideas in town (and across the bay!). Saw a moose (no antlers) and a porcupine, so we thought that was neat. Highly recommend and would stay again.

Needed repair and was dirty.

  • 1 of 5

The view from the window of mountains and bay was beautiful. But we were not happy with the house. It needed repair. There was mold around the upstairs bathroom tub and shower cutain was dirty. The washer had mold around the rubber which smelled pretty bad. The dishwashers top rack was broken. The entrance to the house had an odor. We would not stay here again.

Owner's Response: I always welcome feedback - thank you. I am glad you enjoyed the view. It was heartwarming when I visited during the stay, to see your sons' kids playing catch and running around the yard, playing and enjoying themselves. I am sorry that the house did not meet expectations. If these issues had been addressed during the 11 day stay, especially when I dropped by, they could have been addressed and corrected immediately. Receiving it in a review and via text message on the day you checked out was a surprise. I usually require an extra cleaning by my cleaning crew for stays longer than a week but did not in this case. I'd like to address the items you mentioned that needed cleaning and repair. - The caulking in the upstairs tub has been replaced, and the shower curtain was wiped down. - If the front loading washer door is closed in between uses, the dampness creates conditions for mold. It appears that the door of the washer was closed when not in use and that over the 11 days you were there some mold occurred. I usually remind guests to leave the door open and ensure my cleaning crew wipes down the rubber ring and treats regularly with affresh. This was done after checkout. - The dishwasher rack was not set in the track. It took me my cleaning crew a couple of minutes to get back in the track so that it was sliding properly. I had hoped that the original discount I gave helped mitigate these inconveniences. Caribou Meadows normally rents for $350/night but since your son is locally stationed with the coast guard, end of season and length of stay I reduced it to the same rate as Moose Meadows -$225/night. I am sorry that these issues were not addressed during your stay to make your entire stay pleasant. Sincerely, Catkin Kilcher Burton

Caribou Meadows Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We loved every moment of our time at Caribou Meadows. It is a lovely cabin with everything you could possibly need - a true home away from home! Catkin is an extremely gracious hostess and we loved hearing the stories about her family and their history on the homestead. We would stay there for the whole summer if we could! Go up the street to Mark's "Trail's End Horse Adventures" for a day of fun.
