This recently remodeled 2-bedroom, 900 sq.ft. apartment is on the garden level of a classic, 100 year old farmhouse on a 20 acre property near Clinton Lake. The walkout apartment features a private entrance, private deck, handmade oak furniture, kitchenette, full bath, and (for your privacy), soundproof walls and ceiling. If you so choose, outdoor adventure is right around the corner. The property has a one-mile walking path available for your use and is a short bike to the Clinton Lake wildlife area. In fact, our road dead-ends at a free (albeit primitive) boat-ramp and fishing location. Two kayaks and two bikes are available and complimentary. Also, Rock Chalk Park always has year-round events. The city of Lawrence is only 3-miles east and less than 5 minutes drive. We have lived in Lawrence for 25 years and are willing to provide any info that would make your stay perfect. Feel free to book a night, weekend, or week's stay, with nearby activities for anyone, ages five to eighty-five! Or come just to enjoy the peace and quiet.

About John Green
Pattie and John have lived at Rancho Verde for 12 years, and in Lawrence for 30. In their spare time they refurbish old homes. Along with the 'Sisters House' you will be staying in (described below) there is also a second house on the property. This one was the childhood home of New York Yankees great, Ralph Hauk, who managed and played on the team during the hay day of the Yankees storied career.
John Green purchased this Farmhouse in 2006
Why John Green chose Lawrence
This home is one of two remaining 'sister houses' built roughly 100 years ago, individually, by the father of five girls. He built one for each girl! We know this because after moving and re-furbishing the house, the woman who owned it prior to us drove by to tell us how it all happened! ...that's right, she drove. And had no problem hustling up our stairs! Ralph Hauk's home (also on the property) was built with rocks in-between the two by fours. This was to protect them from Quantrill's raiders, at a time when Jayhawks carried rifles! After all, they lived down the road from the only African American community, in a town founded on 'northerner' values, by people willing to die for them. And die they did, inciting the beginning of the Civil War.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
You will be staying in a house that is part of the storied Lawrence History, in-between the town of Lawrence, KU, and Clinton Lake. Kayaks, bikes, hikes, and sailboat rental are all at your fingertips; but you are also 10 minutes from a nightlife and restaurant scene that are often written up in travel magazines.

I had to travel to Lawrence for business. But we're so glad that we chose this place, rather than being cooped up in some hotel room. For those looking for a place where they can let their kids get out and be kids (ours are 13, 11, 5, and 1.5), this is the place. John and Pattie were gracious hosts. The setting was nice, quiet, peaceful, and private. The kids were able to get out and explore nature. Among other things, we enjoyed the hiking; campfire; bicycles; grilling; the lake, the beach, etc.; and the trampoline was a hit for the whole family. Besides all that, the house was just right. And there was a good size TV in the house, but there was just no time to turn it on due to too much "old fashioned/unplugged" family-fun being had.
We loved this property! Secluded and quiet, yet close to everything “Lawrence” We will stay here again, for sure!
Beautiful, relaxing country setting
John and Pattie are awesome hosts, welcoming my family into their beautiful country home. It was very clean and spacious, an amazing little get-away that is near town but feels secluded. This home in Kansas has a lot to offer, and my family enjoyed kayaking at Clinton lake just down the road. We will be back, as we were not able to break the 1 minute lap record on the go kart behind the property. The personalized cups were also a nice touch. We cannot wait to come back!
relaxing location for a busy college graduation weekend
Four of us stayed 3 nights very comfortably at John and Pattie's VRBO during KU's graduation weekend. Rock Chalk! It's a peaceful and relaxing location just outside of the city. You have your own private deck along with a grill and plenty of seating. The patio seats 10-12 people easily. As a host, John was very accommodating and friendly.
Comfortable and great host. Very peaceful
The host was very welcoming, great WiFi. Place was comfortable. We enjoyed our stayed
Our stay was so relaxing and calm here. With Clinton Lake being 10 minutes away we were able to put our boat in and our easily for boating fun. The property had a wonderful walking trail, gorgeous running creek, fun kayaking in the pond, & so much more that we didn't even get to do. We will definitely stay here again!
The property is located on rural land, within walking distance to Clinton lake. Whereas Lawrence has shopping, restaurants, nightlife, and everything you would expect from a college town, the lake provides great boating, fishing, windsurfing, kite boarding, beaches, hiking, and general outdoor fun...right in your back yard.
