About Dermot Dinan

Originally from Ireland but spent most of my life in the USA. Over many years I traveled to Guatemala to visit the Maya ruins and fell in love with Lake Atitlan. When I retired I decided to move to the Lake and bought this magnificent house overlooking the lake. I now spend most of my time here when not traveling to the US to visit family and grandsons. Each year I go back to Ireland for a few months visiting family but always I am eager to return to Jaibalito which is now my home.

Dermot Dinan purchased this house in 2008

Why Dermot Dinan chose Jaibalito

During my early travels in Guatemala I always seemed to pass through Lake Atitlan. Each time I got to know it more and more. It was then I decided to retire here.

The setting and beauty is second to none with about 12 villages around the lake, all still with indigenous population. Jaibalito is the smallest, population of about 900 where Kakchikel is the first spoken language followed by Spanish. The local women still wear the traje unique to the area. The only access to Jaibalito is via water taxi ( lancha) about 15 mins from Panajachel.

You can also take a scenic walk on the trail between Jaibalito and Santa Cruz which gives awesome views on the trail. There is ample opportunities to indulge in hiking, visiting other villages, swimming in the lake or just lay back and enjoy the garden, lake view and read a book.

What makes this house unique

When I was looking for property around the lake this particular house caught my fancy because of its design, and location. Sitting on the balcony at anytime, but especially during late afternoon, you can enjoy the view, listen to the birds in the garden and watch some spectacular sunsets. Indeed from the comfort of your upstairs bedroom you can also view the sunrise.

Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous

Dermot's house is unbelievable. Literally a diamond in the rough! The House, decor, amenities, yard were everything you could want and more. It would have been nice to have an outdoor BBQ or wood grill to cook on outside and take advantage of the terrific weather. The upper deck is the perfect place to have your morning coffee or evening cocktails while looking out over Lake Atitlan.

If you are looking for an amazing place to stay as your base to see Lake Atitlan this is it. Its a one hour hike to Santa Cruz and a 2 hour hike to San Marcos. Everywhere else is a water taxi. The only negative comment (out of anyone's control) are the dogs barking and fighting all night (but that is all part of the experience) and nothing that a pair of foam earplugs didn't cure!

Lucas the house/grounds keeper was superb. All the locals are extremely friendly.

Han's restaurant was a regular visit for his amazing Snitzel and Spatzle as well as his hand picked and roasted coffee beans. He also makes the best granola we have every had (terrific over a bowl of fresh fruit and yogurt).

We really enjoyed your home, thanks Dermot!

Gorgeous Sanctuary on Lake Aitilan

  • 4 of 5

Dermot's house in the village of Jaibalito was beautiful, with stunning gardens and perfectly maintained grounds. Inside a tall wall, it felt like a hidden castle in the middle of this tiny village. We were grateful for conveniences such as drinkable water, full kitchen, internet, laundry, etc. The only downside was very uncomfortable beds, but when the next door neighbor is a large family in a small dirt floor house, it seems inappropriate to complain about comfort.

Nice accomodations .....but.......

  • 2 of 5

Casa Dermot is a very beautiful place in a very different setting........the reviews we based our choice to rent were misleading. The barking and howling of the dog packs which occurred without a break from sundown to sun up were intolerable, even with the use of ear plugs, this with the addition of the roosters, made sleep during the night near impossible. Sitting out on the patio in the evening was difficult due to the smoke from the wood burning fires the locals used to cook evening meals, and to burn the days garbage. We had booked and paid for a 3 week stay, 2 weeks in, we made the decision to leave and find accommodation in Antigua, where a good nights rest was finally found.....if its a quite a peace full vacation you are seeking this is not the place for you, if you are looking to witness a very traditional village, traditional way of life, and comfortable accommodation then yes Casa Dermot would be the place for you.

Beautiful home with stunning views.

  • 4 of 5

Magnificent well-maintained home with lovely art and garden. The view is unmatched. You can drink the water in the home's faucets and put TP in the commodes -a rare treat for Guatemala. Downsides of this area- incessant barking dogs all night long (they look cute sleeping on the sidewalks all day) and roosters very noisy starting about 3am - well before daylight. Earplugs helped a great deal. Also, neighboring businesses and homes burn garbage continually so there's a smell and smokiness that was enough that it kept us off the beautiful decks.

Owner's Response: Jaibalito is not any noisier than any other village in Guatemala. Having said that: this is a noisy, dirty country, but choosing to live here, we accept it and we hope our visitors inform them of these cultural differences when planning their trip. As for the trash burning: it does happen, but in this case the smoke was cause by forest fires in the neighboring valley. We are extremely apologetic that the fire that made national and international press inconvenienced our guests, but this is of course beyond our control.

Beautiful view, house and garden - loved it!

  • 4 of 5

We booked the house relatively last minute for Christmas with our 2 children and were unsure what to expect despite having visited the Lake over 10 years ago. Jabalito village was a pleasant surprise, it felt very local and often the beaten track whilst still having shops and a couple of nice restaurants to have a touch of luxury too! The house itself is wonderful, particularly the huge terraces with amazing views. The facilities and equipment were excellent. We also really loved having the garden which is amazingly well looked after and so wonderful to have vegetables and fruit for us to use too. Luis (the caretaker) also helped us to have a fire in the upstairs fireplace too which was also a nice Christmas-type touch for us. We would definitely recommend the property for others who appreciate being really in the heart of a beautiful location and somewhere that we would consider the real Guatemala.

Thank you!

Wonderful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This is our third stay at Lago Atitlan in as many years, and by far the best accommodation we have rented. The house, secluded behind a walled garden toward the back of Jaibalito village, is its own small world. The garden is beautifully landscaped and has a variety of ornamentals and edible planets, overseen by the gardener/caretake Lucas who lives on a lower level beneath the main structure. The two story house has two wide verandas, the second level affording a spectacular view across the lake of the three volcanos. There is plenty of hot water, good water pressure, and, best of all, an ultraviolet filtration system that ensures absolute water purity. The kitchen has all needed to prepare full meals, with a gas range. The wifi is strong throughout. There is an extensive collection of books: fiction and nonfiction, with an emphasis on Mayan culture. The decor reflects the owners interests in native culture and his world travels. The house is beautiful and totally serviceable. The beds are firmly comfortable, the two bedrooms ( one up, one down ) ensuite with full showers. There is a guest bathroom just off the kitchen, and a clothes washer and dryer in a separate structure just behind the house. It is a retreat that you may not wish to leave. But, when you do there are two nearby dining options at Hotel Casa Del Mundo and Ven Aca and within the village posada Jaibalito. From the village dock one can access any part of the lake with either public or private boat transportation. We return to Guatemala regularly and typically spend part of our winter sojourn at Lago Atitlan. I will be returning to Casa Dermot.

Jaibalito has several hiking trails which will take you through the mountains or to the next villages.

A short lancha trip will take to San Marcos ( new age interests), San Juan with its woman's cooperative who use only natural dyes in their work, you can visit their stores and watch the process. San Pedro is a bigger village known for its backpacking community, Santiago is bigger where men and women still use the traditional traje and has a vibrant market and street stall for buying textiles and other items.

There is a nature reserve just outside Panajachel and some great restaurants in the town center. From Pana you can get almost anywhere using the minibuses which leave regularly to e.g. City, Xela and the coast.

There is a ceremonial Maya site between Pana and Solola and arrangements can be made for a visit. Solola also has a very vibrant market twice a week and is worth a visit.

Jaibalito is small, but can get noisy at times with churches and lots of dogs. Hardly any Guatemalan village is suited for light sleepers.
