About the property

The Pump House is a traditional style cottage, which overlooks a beautiful Victorian lawn with native and exotic trees to the front, and a cobblestone yard to the back. The cottage is tastefully decorated throughout, bright and spacious, with the guests' comfort and enjoyment in mind. It has central heating and a solid fuel stove as well as a range of extra complimentary amenities. It is located next to our 18th century house, in the middle of 35 acres of farmland dotted with ancient trees, shrubberies, and a wide variety of wildlife and domestic animals-yet only 20 minutes walk from the historic town of Athy. The Barrow runs adjacent to it and is ideal for coarse fishing or bird watching. We pride ourselves on the gentle hospitality we provide our guests and look forward to welcoming you soon!

About Athy: - a heritage town in south Kildare, situated on the intersection of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal. The town developed from a 12th century Anglo-Norman settlement and has many beautiful landmark monuments. The Heritage Centre, situated in the main town square, provides a wealth of information to all visitors and doubles as a local history museum. There are several important festivals in Athy throughout the year, namely the Water Festival (May), Gordon Bennett Vintage Motor Rally (June), the Kildare Agricultural Show (June) and Athy Bluegrass Festival (July) and the Shackleton Autumn School (October). Tuesdays are market day in Athy. There is also a number of quality restaurants in the town, as well as traditional Irish pubs and a good selection of shops.

Activities on our farm: FISHING - The Barrow runs adjacent to our farm and offers fishing enthusiasts enjoyment all year round, with plenty of pike, bream and roach available.

FAUNA AND FLORA - ours is a visitor friendly farm and guests are welcome to roam through the fields and enjoy the countryside at close hand. There are many beautiful old trees dotted through the farm and a wide variety of wildlife and domestic animals to be seen: pheasants, rabbits, hares, hens, cows, horses and our resident donkey - Donkey-jote! And while you're at it, don't forget to close your eyes and enjoy the magnificent bird song, particularly if you didn't get up to hear the Dawn Chorus at day break..

Other local activities: All of these and many more are available either in Athy or within a short distance drive: GOLF - see details below. FISHING - the River Barrow and the Grand Canal offer fishing enthusiasts enjoyment all year round, with plenty of pike, bream and roach available. There are also trout fishing lakes nearby. HORSE RACING -The Curragh, Naas and Punchestown are the nearest racecourses and host monthly meetings. GREYHOUND RACING - a cheaper and exciting alternative to horse racing. Races take place in Newbridge every Friday and Saturday night. MOTOR RACING - for 'would-be Schumachers' at Mondello Park Racing Circuit. PAINT BALLING - a fun filled experience you'll never forget! Available in Stradbally. SOMETHING WE DIDN'T MENTION? If there is any other activity that you are particularly interested in, just ask and we will be happy to make enquiries for you!

A Lovely Comfortable Self Contained well Equiped Cottage in a beauty setting ,

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Pump House for a weeks holiday from the 12 th September to the 19th September, while visiting family in Athy and we new it was going to be a lovely experiance before we arrived as Claudia was very helpful before our trip with directions and information on what to expect, we were greeted with a bottle of Red wine as we arrived after 9pm from a long journey from the ferry, which was lovely and we communicated very much by text messages , as we were very busy with family , but Claudia and James were very much on hand to help us out if needed, James came straight away to fix the Broad Band as soon as we released we could not connect to it, every thing was on hand , and we had a lovely time, being surrounded by a working farm and a traditional Irish family, which was like home from home, as my husband grew up in Athy and it was lovely to explore , see family but be independent , there is an abundance of things to enjoy, and to be close to a lovely family ,we highly recommend this cottage for a great place to stay , we will be going back again and have recommended it to all our family as an extra place to stay , we made use of the dishwasher , washer dryer, and hairdryer and log burner on one of the nights , but found the cottage very warm and was very pleased with how well equipped this cosy cottage, great value for money and very relaxing, Thank you to Claudia and James for thinking of every thing for us , so that we did not have , and giving us a relaxing stress free holiday, God Bless, Tina and Joe,

A perfect country idyll

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely week in this cottage! Knew it was going to be a good week when we were presented with freshly made scones and cream and jam on arrival! This cottage is in a perfect location, the family have very friendly pets wondering around - there were two lambs when we were there - making it a great place for kids. The family themselves have very friendly helpful children, who my son was mad to play with all week, as well as using their trampoline and playing with their other toys! The cottage itself is extremely well kitted out and every little detail has been thought of. We shall definitely be back to stay and can't recommend it highly enough.

A week at the Pump House in late winter

  • 5 of 5

We stayed as a couple in the Pump House the second week of March, Spring was just arriving with daffodils, blossom and leaf buds just starting to open. The weather was fairly kind to us all week, although clearly there had been a lot of rain previously as the river was very full at the start of the week. We arrived just after dark and Claudia was very welcoming and showed us the cottage. It is exactly as described. We loved it, just right for us, and cosy especially with the log fire going in the evenings (unlimited wood is supplied along with firelighters). We didn't need to use the sofa bed on the mezzanine, but it looked good, probably for children rather than a second couple. Being on a working farm the drive was a little muddy, but that is only to be expected and as we are both from farming backgrounds that didn't bother us at all, and we loved having the donkey, cows, cats and dog around us.

The location of the cottage is ideal for exploring all over Ireland as the road links fan out well from there, we visited Dublin, the Wicklow mountains (Glendalough, Sally Gap...), New Ross & Wexford (tracing family history) & Hook Head lighthouse, unfortunately we ran out of time to visit other places that we wanted to see. We recommend exploring Athy itself, it is a lovely town. The museum is lovely, and Clancy's on a Thursday night is a must for lovers of trad-music. Food shopping is easy as there is a large Aldi very close and Lidl slightly further into town. A petrol station (very cheap fuel) is near the property. The bed is very comfortable and the bathroom very well laid out, and with the under-floor heating, very warm on the toes ! The kitchen is well-equipped with a washer-dryer (used once), dishwasher (didn't use) and all the necessary paraphernalia for cooking and eating with.

If I had to make any suggestions they would be the following :

Put a sign up at the entrance to the lane as we missed the turn (it was dark). Secondly maybe widen the gravel area in front of the cottage to enable parking the car on the gravel (as it had been wet it was a little muddy), and thirdly put up a large wall mirror in the bedroom (for hair drying purposes).

We loved staying at the Pump House and would definitely stay again, both Claudia and James (and the children we met) are just lovely, very friendly.

A gem of a cottage - cosy home from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at The Pump House. With a 2 yr old & 3 yr old I wondered if we would struggle for space but we didn't at all. It was so cosy & the rooms were bigger than I'd expected. It has a beautiful log burner and plenty of logs to go with it. We even got an unexpected night out as Claudia's oldest daughter babysat for us! I can't praise highly enough the hospitality we received. We asked about numerous things as although I'm Irish living in the UK I'm not from the area originally & we were visiting other relations - the family were so helpful to us for everything but respected our privacy at all times also which was important to us. It was the best of both worlds - you could ask for anything you needed but could spend time on your own without interruption. Beatrice babysat for us & it was a huge plus when you don't expect to have a night out because of small ones. We came home one dark evening around 6pm to a donkey standing outside the front door - Donkeoti became our friend & the children absolutely loved seeing him and the chickens wandering around in the mornings. We'll definitely be using again when visiting my husbands family in the local area and look forward to wandering around the vast grounds again next time.

lovely house but needs work. not worth 5 stars

  • 2 of 5

Disappointed. Second time around, this time for a longer period than before. No warm welcome like we did in 2015, no thank you or acknowledgement for dropping the months rent. No contact made by owners at all, only contact was made by me to deal with complaints. No internet as stated.....sometimes it did work but very very poor quality. House is lovely but looks tired, general cleanliness was below standards, fabrics furniture is very dirty, shower is mouldy and chair is coming of the wall, no working fire alarm. Washing machine, dryer, DVD and CD player, juicer are all not working or come with faults. sheets and towels have stains, hot water system is too small to fill half a bathtub let alone four people, only three table chairs for four people. the list goes on. . Lovely place but needs a make over. Left feedback and then was referred to as unkind and vindictive by the owners. I believe that knowingly and willingly renting a cottage that isn't in the best shape due to busy summer (as stated by owner) for the full price without offering any form of compensation is vindictive and unkind.

Owner's Response: For nearly four weeks Kirstie (and her Mother Leslie) stayed in The Pump House, which is located right beside our own home. It is simply not true that we were unwelcoming or unavailable. She saw at least one of us almost on a daily basis out and about, and indeed we spoke to each other on many occasions. Never once did she mention to us how 'disappointed' she felt during their stay! We are shocked and dismayed now to see that she chose to air these grievances after her departure, in a public forum, when she had so many opportunities to do it directly to us during her stay. We have always given very careful attention to any concerns raised by our guests over the past 10 years and would of course have wholeheartedly done the same with Kirstie, had she given us that opportunity. Of the issues she mentions in her review, the only one that we are prepared to accept unreservedly is the quality of the broadband during her stay. Though it generally meets the requirements of our guests very well, despite our bests efforts it was not of sufficient quality on this occasion. We are now resolving that problem. We take enormous pride in the many overwhelmingly positive reviews we have received to date. We can't help but feel that this review casts us in an unfairly negative light and urge all future potential guests to see it in the context of all other previously received reviews. We feel confident in assuring you that you will not regret your decision to stay at The Pump House at any time in the future.
