Overview

Photos and Description of this Paudeenourstown holiday cottage

1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, kitchen/living area. Sleeps up tp 4 people.

The Pump House is a traditional style cottage, which overlooks a beautiful Victorian lawn with native and exotic trees to the front, and a cobblestone yard to the back. The cottage is tastefully decorated throughout, bright and spacious, with the guests' comfort and enjoyment in mind. It has central heating and a solid fuel stove (logs are provided free of charge) as well as a range of extra complimentary amenities. It is located next to our 18th century house, in the middle of 35 acres of farmland dotted with ancient trees, shrubberies, and a wide variety of wildlife and domestic animals-yet only 20 minutes walk from the historic town of Athy. The Barrow runs adjacent to it and is ideal for coarse fishing or bird watching. We pride ourselves on the gentle hospitality we provide our guests and look forward to welcoming you soon!

About Athy: - a heritage town in south Kildare, situated on the intersection of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal. The town developed from a 12th century Anglo-Norman settlement and has many beautiful landmark monuments. The Heritage Centre, situated in the main town square, provides a wealth of information to all visitors and doubles as a local history museum. There are several important festivals in Athy throughout the year, namely the Water Festival (May), Gordon Bennett Vintage Motor Rally (June), the Kildare Agricultural Show (June) and Athy Bluegrass Festival (July) and the Shackleton Autumn School (October). Tuesdays are market day in Athy. There is also a number of quality restaurants in the town, as well as traditional Irish pubs and a good selection of shops.

Activities on our farm: FISHING/ROWING - The Barrow runs adjacent to our farm and offers fishing enthusiasts enjoyment all year round, with plenty of pike, bream and roach available.

FAUNA AND FLORA - ours is a visitor friendly farm and guests are welcome to roam through the fields and enjoy the countryside at close hand. There are many beautiful old trees dotted through the farm and a wide variety of wildlife and domestic animals to be seen: pheasants, rabbits, hares, hens, cows, horses and our resident donkey - Donkey-jote! And while you're at it, don't forget to close your eyes and enjoy the magnificent bird song, particularly if you didn't get up to hear the Dawn Chorus at day break..

Other local activities: All of these and many more are available either in Athy or within a short distance drive: GOLF - see details below. FISHING - the River Barrow and the Grand Canal offer fishing enthusiasts enjoyment all year round, with plenty of pike, bream and roach available. There are also trout fishing lakes nearby. HORSE RACING -The Curragh, Naas and Punchestown are the nearest racecourses and host monthly meetings. GREYHOUND RACING - a cheaper and exciting alternative to horse racing. Races take place in Newbridge every Friday and Saturday night. MOTOR RACING - for 'would-be Schumachers' at Mondello Park Racing Circuit. PAINT BALLING - a fun filled experience you'll never forget! Available in Stradbally. SOMETHING WE DIDN'T MENTION? If there is any other activity that you are particularly interested in, just ask and we will be happy to make enquiries for you!

Just got back from a wonderful stay at "The Pump House" A Big Thank You to Claudia, James and their family and pets for providing us with a warm welcome, a most comfortable base in an idyllic setting.

This cottage is quaint but with every modern convenience that you could ask for and more.

We especially loved the wood burning stove which gave our evenings that warm fuzzy feeling.

Thank you also for the delicious home made scones and jam you provided for us on our arrival ( must get the recipe )

We will be back soon,

Jacquie & Mike Berkshire

lovely house but needs work. not worth 5 stars

  • 2 of 5

Disappointed. Second time around, this time for a longer period than before. No warm welcome like we did in 2015, no thank you or acknowledgement for dropping the months rent. No contact made by owners at all, only contact was made by me to deal with complaints. No internet as stated.....sometimes it did work but very very poor quality. House is lovely but looks tired, general cleanliness was below standards, fabrics furniture is very dirty, shower is mouldy and chair is coming of the wall, no working fire alarm. Washing machine, dryer, DVD and CD player, juicer are all not working or come with faults. sheets and towels have stains, hot water system is too small to fill half a bathtub let alone four people, only three table chairs for four people. the list goes on. . Lovely place but needs a make over. Left feedback and then was referred to as unkind and vindictive by the owners. I believe that knowingly and willingly renting a cottage that isn't in the best shape due to busy summer (as stated by owner) for the full price without offering any form of compensation is vindictive and unkind.

Owner's Response: For nearly four weeks Kirstie (and her Mother Leslie) stayed in The Pump House, which is located right beside our own home. It is simply not true that we were unwelcoming or unavailable. She saw at least one of us almost on a daily basis out and about, and indeed we spoke to each other on many occasions. Never once did she mention to us how 'disappointed' she felt during their stay! We are shocked and dismayed now to see that she chose to air these grievances after her departure, in a public forum, when she had so many opportunities to do it directly to us during her stay. We have always given very careful attention to any concerns raised by our guests over the past 10 years and would of course have wholeheartedly done the same with Kirstie, had she given us that opportunity. Of the issues she mentions in her review, the only one that we are prepared to accept unreservedly is the quality of the broadband during her stay. Though it generally meets the requirements of our guests very well, despite our bests efforts it was not of sufficient quality on this occasion. We are now resolving that problem. We take enormous pride in the many overwhelmingly positive reviews we have received to date. We can't help but feel that this review casts us in an unfairly negative light and urge all future potential guests to see it in the context of all other previously received reviews. We feel confident in assuring you that you will not regret your decision to stay at The Pump House at any time in the future.

the owners and family of this cottage , james/claudia and all of the children made us feel so very welcolme, the cottage was lovely and clean and warm, our grandchildren loved playing around the farm with patrick and his sisters.

the animals/dogs/cats/kittens/horses.and especialy the donkey who would knock on the door(hoping for more carrots, they were all so freindly,we fished the river just behind the cottage most days for an hour or two and caught a variety of fish.

i hope we meet again in the future, what a superb holliday this was we had 3 weeks here and never bored

if you needed anything the hosts were so helpful, and we enjoyed been invited into there home for cakes and coffee

A slice of (Irish) heaven

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed at the Pump House in July 2016 for two nights, entirely too short a stay, as it turns out. The house itself was lovely, spotless, quiet, as in the pictures. What we didn't expect was the warm reception we received as we pulled into the property. The owner's children greeted us, took us on a tour of the property, introduced us to the mules, cows, dogs and cats on the property, and led us along the gorgeous river that abuts the farm. Our daughters wish we had booked the place for a week, as the experience was utterly relaxing and the company welcoming and fun. The Pump House is a great base for exploring Kilkenny, Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough, Rock of Cashel and environs, but were we to re-do our vacation, we would make Athy and Claudia and James' wonderful family farm a destination in and of itself.

The pumphouse is a very nice holidayhouse to stay. The owners are very friendly and ready to help!

The house is practical and cosy. You could stay there for months. The sitting room and kitchen is good. The bathroom is excellent; the sleepingroom also. The house is very good for an older couple like us.

It is a very quiet surrounding with very much room and great old trees!

The town Atty and her shops are nearby; just a walk.

Athy is a heritage town in south Kildare, situated on the intersection of the River Barrow and the Grand Canal. It is located 67km southwest of Dublin and has good access routes to Dublin airport and to the seaports of Dublin, Dun Laoghaire (83km) and Rosslare (110km). It also has good train and bus connections and is conveniently located within an hour's driving of Dublin and many of the Midlands main towns: Kildare, Naas, Newbridge, Carlow, Portaloise, Kilkenny, Tullamore and Athlone. County Kildare is the centre of the horse breeding and training industry in Ireland and many of the major stud farms and training establishments are located in the county.

Other Activities: Walking, rowing, canoeing

Golf: GOLF - three of Ireland's best courses are located within a 30-45 minute drive from our cottage: The K Club (venue for the Ryder Cup 2006 Matches), the PGA National Ireland and Carton House. In the town, Athy Golf Club and Cardenton House Par 3 offer a fair test of golf to all categories of players.

If you feel more energetic, go for a long stroll through our fields and along the river Barrow. Take time to admire the many mature trees and shrubbery around you, spot the wildlife and hear the birdsong. You can also try your hand at fishing. Do as little or as much as you choose…
