About the property

Cozy one bedroom cottage on riverfront property on lovely Ware Neck.

Come and spend your vacation in this quiet, peaceful setting on the Ware River. The estate boasts 290 ft of shoreline. This charming and historic 2 story cottage sits on 7 acres located on the Ware Neck Peninsula. The cottage has hand hewn post and beam construction dating to approximately the 1790s. There are fireplaces in both the living room and bedroom. There are ceiling fans in the bedroom and on the front porch. Just in front of the cottage is the restored icehouse built in the late 18th century and used to store blocks of ice brought from up north by steamboats down the Chesapeake Bay. The water front is a short stroll and has a pier with a floating dock. This is a perfect spot for watching beautiful sunsets while enjoying a glass of wine, fishing, crabbing or launching your canoe or kayak. The Cottage is 70 min from Richmond or Norfolk, 2 hours from DC, 45 min from Williamsburg, 30 min from Yorktown and 20 minutes to the Arts community of Matthews. It provides a great home base for exploring this beautiful and diverse region of Virginia.

Great house in a quiet setting

  • 5 of 5

This is an ideal place to stay if you are in the Gloucester / Williamsburg area. It is on a quiet property and is still close to all the local attractions. The house is very well maintained and the surrounding grounds are beautiful.

Inside nice. Outside. Not as pictured

  • 3 of 5

The inside of cottage was nice and clean. No complaints.

However, the outside of the house is not what is depicted in the photograph. That building in the photograph is farther down the lane .

Our view was not of beautiful flowers but of a someone's home directly in front of us. The front yard is basically a pebble driveway. So if you are expecting to sit on the front porch and admire a flower garden and see the water .... not happening from the house you are actually renting .

Owner's Response: This is a large property with many spaces and buildings. As part of an old plantation there are barns, kitchen garden, and an historic icehouse. These are spaces for you to enjoy. We have pictured and labeled those structures so you will know what the property encompasses. I am sorry that you did not take the time to review the pictures and read the labels. The photos of the exterior of the cottage are clearly labeled and 100% accurate. I might add that 81 prior reviewers had a different experience than you did.

Perfect getaway (with dog)

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was fantastic - exactly what we were looking for! In great condition, very clean, well equipped, comfortable (lots of great reading spots). Location - just a short walk to the water - was idyllic and peaceful. Short drive to the town of Gloucester Courthouse, where we enjoyed a great dinner at LuluBirds Kitchen. And we were very happy to be able to bring our dog, who loved romping around the estate. We would love to return for another visit. Thank you!

Lovely historic cottage

  • 5 of 5

What a nice surprise. This cottage is adorable. Clean, well equipped and so private. We so enjoyed our coffee each morning on the porch, afternoon sunsets from the dock and walking around the property. It was so nice that our little dog was able to enjoy the large yard running and chasing squirrels. John and Peg are so sweet. It was an easy commute to Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. Be sure and go downtown and have a meal at Olivia's.

Charming cottage with all the comforts of home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and came here for the weekend to celebrate our 29th anniversary. The cottage is even more charming then the pictures convey. Beautifully furnished, spotless and well stocked with everything you could want, and more!. The owners have thought of everything to welcome their guests. The grounds are beautiful. The kitchen garden (the building with the glass front and picket fence) is a real treat. The location on the river is amazing. We brought our own kayak, but the owners have several they let guests use. The floating dock makes launching easy. They even have rods, reels, crab pots and tackle available for use. Sunset and sunrise are beautiful and if you are lucky, you will get to see dolphins! Our time on the river was magical.

There is plenty of information in the cottage about the area. Be sure to check out Main St in the historical district. Easy access to Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg if you are there for a longer stay. If not, just enjoy the grounds, the river and the charming cottage.

We cannot thank Peg and John enough for making us feel at home and sharing their "slice of heaven" with us. We cannot wait to return!
