Space 1,200 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4

Newly remodeled home nestled on a quiet, peaceful nature preserve, located in the Big Cypress Preserve, on the Florida Panther Corridor, in the heart of Everglades National Park which encompasses over 700,000 acres. It's also located on the Florida Great Birding Trail! Join the few naturalists to experience pristine Florida at it's best. A large variety of flora and fauna in different sections of the park.

Literally step outside the home to hike and photograph in every direction!! You can hike through the grasses or hike on the old swamp buggy trails. The trails are rugged and used by the native critters in the area.

The property is a very spiritual place encouraging meditation.

The hard packed limestone rock road is great for biking. No threat of fast moving cars, just the wind in the trees. The area is very quiet and serene as the birds and critters move about. Kayaking, canoeing, paddle board, airboats and swamp buggy tours close by, within a few miles. The Turner River Road boat launch is very near. You may also be lucky enough to spot a panther from there.

Full screened in porches surround the house, a wonderful breeze generally rolls through the house with all the doors open or put on the central air or heat. Pond on the property generally full of resident wildlife: alligator, wading birds, turtles, deer, bobcat, panther, butterflies, wild turkey, bears and more. Spend days wilderness hiking, birding, photography, biking from the house. Exploring the Everglades is an endless journey with few humans in your path. You can also experience the area with world famous photographer, Clyde Butcher. He offers small tour groups. The park rangers also provide walks, maps, advice, etc.. Everglades City is the closest town, 11 miles away, famous for it's local crabs, fishing, nature guides and air boat tours. It is still a quaint village offering shopping for groceries, restaurants and excellent tour guides. Chokoloskee cemeteries and the Ted Smallwood Store are also worth a visit as well as the Ten Thousand Islands and Marco Island. These islands are salt water fishing destination: snook, grouper, tarpon, red fish and drum are generally caught.

This home is perfect for nature enthusiasts, artists,authors,etc...The tranquility will be stimulating. Transportation from either Naples Florida or Ft Lauderdale can be arranged, as well as stocking the refrigerator and other necessities.

Sleeping: It is a one bedroom with a brand new king size bed with 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, and comforter. There is also a comfortable futon in the living room, a full size sofa, and a roll away cot. Everything is comfortable, new, clean and fresh.

Amenities: It has a very well stocked kitchen of electronics and utensils: range, refrigerator with ice maker, separate deep freeze, microwave, rice cooker, electric tea kettle, electric coffee maker, french press, waffle maker, blender, toaster oven, and filtered well water.

Outside grill, 2 adult bicycles, clothing washer, stereo, satellite TV, internet, Samsung Galaxy 5 cell phone to use while visiting(signal 90%), dvds, pool table, telescope, binoculars, cards, dartboard, , ice cooler, backpack, benches around pond.

About Sue Nulman

We've always had a great love for the outdoors, especially the Everglades, being such a unique ecosystem. It's the last 'frontier' in south Florida. It has always been a convenient place to visit since Tamiami Trail (US#41)cuts across the state. We've been enjoying the Everglades for 30 years it offers such great diversity in any given season. The flora and fauna change constantly and every day is a new surprise in the woods. Private homes are very seldom available for sale! Most are passed down to the next generation. We were so excited to buy a place right on the Fl Panther Corridor and the Fl Birding Trail. We knew the area must be full of wildlife.

Sue Nulman purchased this house in 2013

Why Sue Nulman chose Big Cypress

I fell in love with this area and sought this property out for years. Only a select few people have the privilege to stay in such a unique area. The pristine ecosystem surrounding the home makes this one special place. It is also very close to the scenic Ten Thousand Isles,Friends of Fakahatchee Park, Collier Seminole State Park, Fl Panther National Wildlife Refuge, The original Skunk Ape Research Headquarters and Miccosukee Indian villages.

What makes this house unique

Privacy and serenity within a naturalist's paradise best describes the location. Luxury and comfort best describes the home. Should you desire upscale dining and shopping, Naples is about 40 mintes away. Miami is 1 hour away. The Keys is 2 hour away.

Owner /mgr may stop by for maintenance.

Feel free to stroll through the woods to view large variety of critters in their natural habitat.

As you open Cypress Garden's bamboo gate, be prepared to step into a serene oasis, engulfed in wild gardens surrounding a classic Everglades cottage.

Enclosed by roomy verandas, the elegant marbled interior flows from one magical surprise to another. Thanks to one friendly cardinal, you will wake in time to feed the waiting deer and take in the property's abundant birdlife. If you choose to step away from this rare find, many opportunities to explore the Glades can be found within an easy drive. And in the end, you will definitely come back new.

Where do you live?

peaceful, totally private nature retreat

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks in February here and loved it. We never heard or saw a car on the road leading to the cottage! We spent most days birding the many nearby nature areas and the cottage is a lovely base. We counted 37 species of birds just in the immediate yard, not counting fly overs. Relaxing on the porches was wonderful, and the big sky is amazing with no light pollution. Deer, turtles, gator, turkeys and a Fox Squirrel for viewing pleasure. The kitchen is very well-stocked and we ate many meals in. The bed is very comfy. Groceries and restaurants on Marco Island, about 40 min., and a few in Everglades City, 30 min.

Only suggestion would be to repair the grill lid - but otherwise perfect and we would return!

A ver well maintained, comfortable, relaxing nature lover's cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks in Jan. 2018 at Sue's cottage, was awesome! So relaxing, quiet & surrounded by wildlife & birds. The cottage itself is beautiful, has everything that you need, very well kept. Can relax & spend all day at the cottage or do day trips to a number of great nature locations ( Shark Valley, Loop Road, Island Ranch, Tigertail Beach, Corkscrew Swamp to name a few ). A number of great eating places within half an hour to an hour away. We hope to return again next year, looking forward to it👍🏻 Sue & Bob Farlow, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.

Big Cypress Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Quiet with great visitors , deer, turkey, gators, wood storks and a cast of numerous others. You have to look and observe to really realize what is around you. The area surrounding you is unique and should be explored to reveal an eco system like no other. The home is very accommodating and the wraparound porch outstanding . One recommendation put in a stainless steel sink.!

Peaceful retreat in Big Cypress Preserve

  • 5 of 5

The photos truly do not do the house or its surroundings justice. A beautiful property - comfortable house with every amenity or supply one would need and gorgeous grounds with a lively menagerie of woodland critters. We could not have enjoyed this house and our holiday more. Thank you for the wonderful experience.

Quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our brief stay at this remote spot. We had booked for a week, but had to leave after 2 nights because of a nearby wildfire in the Big Cypress which eventually burned over 26,000 acres. The area had been scheduled for a prescribed burn, but it was too dry, and then it caught fire anyway, so in the long run it was probably helpful in regenerating native plant growth. The owner was more than nice, quickly refunding the cost of the entire week. We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in the area. Thank you Susan!

Please note this luxury cottage is located in Ochopee, NOT Everglades City, it is approximately a 15 minute drive from Everglades City.

This property is suited for nature lovers only!

Luckily, there are no box stores, shopping malls or chain owned restaurants nearby. This location is pristine, just like it was back in the 1970's when the park service acquired most properties to form the park. If you need to have a shopping afternoon, head west into Naples about 40 miles for your fix.

Out here you will find only the wilds of South Florida. You can easily take day trips or half day trips to attractions or beaches in Naples or Miami. All photos included in my site are real, no photo shop or other devices were used. Real animals playing, eating and co- existing together, for real!!
