About Owner / Manager

The local historical society owns and operates the Yellow House. Your stay helps to support our efforts to preserve other historic properties in Erie County.

Owner / Manager purchased this farmhouse in 1857

Why Owner / Manager chose Girard

The Battles family owned the the property, which includes 50 acres of farmland, 80 acres of woods and hiking trails, and two historic houses on the property.

The history dates back to Asa Battles, born in 1786. He and Elizabeth Brown lived in Chautauqua County until he purchased 300 acres in Girard. He died in 1848, and his 15-year-old son, Rush Sobieski Battles, inherited most if it, as well as the care of his mother and two unwed sisters, Alcina and Lucina. Rush Battles built a yellow Italianate style farmhouse in 1858.

Rush and Henry Webster partnered to create the Webster House of Banking, and Rush married Webster's sister Charlotte. The Charlotte Elizabeth Battles Memorial Museum was named after their only surviving child who attended college, married Charles Barber, traveled and became a businesswoman when she inherited her father's estate and the bank. She donated to the Girard community and funded school construction.

Charlotte Battles, she once wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt in response to his banking moratorium during the Great Depression that said, 'Mr. President, we're minding our business, you do the same. Since I do not presume to tell you how to run the country, please do not presume to tell me how to run my bank.'

Such a unique house to stay in. Beds were extremely comfortable and plenty of space for the 4 of us.

Beautiful historic home

We enjoyed this lovely historic farm house and the surrounding trails. It was comfortable, very clean, and relaxing. We traveled to attend a quilt show at the Erie convention center and spent time on Presque Isle.

Very nice renovation for this old historic property.

  • 4 of 5

Our long weekend stay in "the 1858 Battles Yellow Farm House" was very enjoyable. Spotlessly clean, everything we needed was there. A good clean bed, nice bathroom with towels and washcloths, a well appointed kitchen, efficient central air conditioning, all conveniently done and without destroying the visual ambiance of life in the 19th Century. The house is a gem, full of memorabilia from that bygone era in which our fore bearers lived. We especially enjoyed the peace and quiet that also reminded us of those past days in a simpler world. The quaint town center is a short distance away with shopping and restaurants. We want to go back and stay longer and hope that we will be welcomed again so graciously as was chalked on the kitchen blackboard. Thanks to all those responsible for this restoration and the idea of making it available to be enjoyed by the public. The only downsides were the distance from our car to the house and no visible lighting in the parking area. They are minor deficiencies, but worthy of notation. Thank you.

Fabulous Experience

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfectly delightful stay in this unique historic house. It was *quiet* and wonderful. Near enough to Erie to take advantage of lake activities there. Highly recommended if wanting a get-away-from-it-all atmosphere :-).

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

Very reasonable price. Easy to find. Very simple check in. Well appointed. Quiet and low tech, just what I was looking for. Slept in every day without interruption, spent the day in Erie, then back to Girard. Grocery was just outside town on the way, grab a few items for a simple dinner in the well furnished kitchen. It was a great stay. AC was perfect for my girlfriend. Never ran out of hot water in the shower. This will be my first inquiry if I ever come back to the area.
