Welcome to The King’s Gathering, a private four bedroom, three bathroom log cabin on three levels 1.5 miles south of the Salmon River and the famous lower fly zone in Altmar, NY. Host up to 12 people in our well-appointed 2,300 sq. ft. vacation home offering antiques and modern day conveniences. After catching your salmon or steelhead, hiking or cross-country skiing through our 63 wooded acres surrounded by state and county lands, riding an ATV/snowmobile on area trails (trailheads are minutes from the property), or perhaps kayaking or canoeing in nearby Happy Valley ponds or rivers, rest assured of a great night’s sleep.
Each room is named after a fish that can be caught in the Salmon River. The 'King Room' offers a king bed on the main level surrounded by logs adjacent to a full bath. Upstairs features three bedrooms and a full bathroom. On this floor, the 'Coho Room' sleeps two on a queen bed and is painted the deep greens you would find on this fish. The 'Brown Trout Room' is painted a rich gold similar to the coloration of this fish. The blue 'Rainbow Trout Room' offers two twin beds with accents of red found on this gorgeous fish. The basement features slate flooring and a full bathroom with walk-in shower constructed of marble and river rocks. The basement area is also a great place to gather for board/video games or a friendly game of foosball.
All rooms and bunk bed feature the uber-comfy, exclusive “Marriott Bed” (9” deep foam mattress on a 10 ½” box spring). There are also sleeper sofas (queen & twin) and a twin over full bunk bed available for additional guests. All bed and bath linens provided; down-alternative duvets used.
Enjoy all your home-cooked meals or morning espresso at our custom built farm table that extends to 10 feet and seats up to 14. Grill and eat the day’s catch at the picnic table on the lower back patio. Make s’mores and share tales of the day around the fire pit or challenge one another to horseshoes.
The cabin is 6.4 miles from Exit 34 on I-81 at NY-104 E in the Happy Valley region. Pulaski is 10 miles northwest. Tug Hill region, renowned for incredible snow accumulations, is 20 minutes north/east. 35 minutes south is Syracuse (and Syracuse International Airport). Shop at Destiny USA, one of the top ten largest malls in America. Sackets Harbor and Watertown are 45 minutes north on I-81. Thousand Islands and Alexandria Bay are an hour north. 40 minutes' drive south and you can experience Sylvan Beach Amusement Park, the 'Coney Island' of central NY, and Turning Stone Casino. We are one hour from Skaneateles Lake (one of the Finger Lakes and the edge of wine country).
GENERAL ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA
This is a fun place, after all! Here are the things you CAN do, but are subject to change without advisement.
Walking/hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. There are some roughhewn trails behind the house for exploring. 63 acres’ worth. South of the property is the Happy Valley Wildlife Management Area featuring four ponds and woodlands ideal for bird watching. South Albion Road is an ATV and snowmobile friendly road providing easy access to club-run and public trailheads minutes' drive from the property.
Salmon River. (5 minutes) One of the best fishing destinations in the world is famous for its annual runs of King and Coho salmon or steelheads. There is a smaller run of summer steelheads and Atlantic salmon. Kayaking and white water rafting available during scheduled water releases.
Happy Valley Wildlife Management Area. (5 minutes) Hunting, trapping, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking are permitted in accordance with the state Fish and Wildlife Law and Regulations.
Salmon River Fish Hatchery. (5 minutes) Over 500,000 visitors stop in on this hatchery to watch the egg retrieval operation of salmon and steelhead and annual return up the Salmon River to the hatchery. It is one of the largest fish hatcheries in operation in New York. Visitors in October or late March to early April can see salmon or steelhead jumping the fish ladder.
Salmon River Falls. (5 miles) The beauty of this 110 foot waterfall - as tall as the American Falls at Niagara Falls - is hard to resist and many people visit everyday, especially in the fall. Due to its popularity, the DEC made improvements a few years ago to the area. There is public parking off Falls Road.
Shopping. (30 minutes) The sixth largest mall in the United States, Destiny USA, is located 30 minutes south. There you’ll find over 200 retailers and restaurants from Macy's to Saks Off Fifth to Dick's Sporting Goods, or Wonderworks, and Regal Cinemas.
Snowmobiling. Tug Hill - The highest snowfall east of the Rockies, with average snowfall of 200” – 300” annually making snowmobiling a wonderful seasonal sport. The property is minutes to public and club snowmobile trailheads.
Finger Lakes. (1-2 hours) Skaneateles has the highest clarity of all the lakes and is an hour’s drive. Two hours west are Canandaigua Lake and Lake Keuka with its wine country trails. Over 200 wineries can be found surrounding these lakes.
Thousand Islands. (One hour) Continue north on I-81 to the beautiful Thousand Islands/Alexandria Bay area and Canadian border. It's an easy day trip. Many of the 1,862 islands are open to the public and are home to parks, campgrounds and cottage rentals.
Syracuse. (30 minutes) Known for its architectural diversity, this city was recognized by Popular Science as one of “America’s Greenest Cities” and is home of the longest running State Fair.
Sandy Island Beach State Park. (18 miles, 30 minutes) Located at the end of CR-15 at Lake Ontario, this sandy beach between North and South Sandy Ponds offers swimming (with bathhouse), picnicking, and outdoor activities.
Turning Stone Casino Resort. (40 miles, 50 minutes) Offers entertainment and nightlife with fine dining options. Their entertainment calendar has offered entertainment from Sara Evans and The Band Perry to Foreigner, Jeff Foxworthy, or Jeff Dunham. Golf, tennis, and spa on property.
Downhill Skiing or Snowboarding. (45 minutes to an hour) Greek Peak Ski Resort in Cortland and Snow Ridge Ski Resort in Turin are both an hour's drive and offer activities like tubing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Several other terrific resorts exist within this drive time.
For the family. Mini golf (seasonal) is at the intersection of SR 13 and east on SR 104. Go-cart racing is available for a fee within 15-20 minutes' drive. Thunder Island Amusement Park in Fulton, NY offers a water park, miniature golf, and a number of other amusement park attractions (30 min away). A few petting zoos and working farms are between 15 minutes and 50 minutes' drive (Grampa Bob's Animal Park or Old MacDonald Farm). If your child is learning about abolition, Oswego County has a number of Underground Railroad historic sites that you can visit, one of which is located in Mexico, NY. Fort Ontario offers civil war reenactments during summer weekends (35-40 minutes' drive).
