Aloha, We have lived on this property for over 20 years. We are very adventurous family! My husband is a avid hunter and enjoys raising his hunting dogs. We love to surf, paddleboard, ride dirtbikes, fish, hike, and everything else under the sun!
Christina 'Chris' Countryman purchased this house in 1994
The wonderful thing about the Pupukea Country Home is that it is 3 minutes away from the most beautiful beaches in the world, yet away from the traffic and road noise. We have fallen in love with our property and home because of the country living aspect. There is something to be said for waking up to North Shore Country Roosters! In the winter months when the waves are high, you can fall asleep to the beautiful sound of the big surf!
Brilliant location, home & hosts!!!!
We had the pleasure of spending 11 nights at Pupukea Retreat, and we would definitely stay here again without hesitation. Very clean, spacious and had all the amenities we needed.it was wonderful to have a large kitchen & laundry. We are a married couple who travelled with our 2 adult daughters, so the home was perfect, especially as the girls each had their own bathroom. We felt very relaxed here and it was a perfect base for our stay during the Pipeline Masters. No issues at all with roosters-didn't even use the earplugs our wonderful host supplied.
Thank you Christina & Kevin.
We had a wonderful stay at this Pupukea home! It is in a neighborhood, and has a huge yard with a mango tree that we picked from every day! They were sweet and delicious! The owners live downstairs and are so nice and helpful if you need them. Other than that, they are very quiet and you hardly see them. Renters have the entire top level of this beautiful custom home. All wood floors and windows, it is gorgeous and very light. Ceiling fans all over to help air flow. There is no air conditioning but they provide fans in all the bedrooms in addition to the ceiling fans. The bedrooms all have their own bathrooms which is very nice. There are huge wooden dining tables both outside and inside so you can choose where to eat. It was so nice to eat outside in the evening. You can't beat the location!! It is close to Shark's Cove for excellent snorkeling, and just a short drive to the well known Sunset Beach, as well as Waimea Beach and Canyon. We spent one night driving a half hour up to have dinner at the food trucks! The only negative would be that yes there are roosters crowing at early hours. And since the windows are all open, you can hear them. But you do get more used to them as time goes on. All in all, I recommend this beautiful home and thank you Christina for all your hospitality!
We were a family of 5 adults (2 parents and 3 adult 'kids') staying for 10 nights.
The house is gorgeous and huge. The photos accurately represent how it looks. It's conveniently located on the north shore, a 5 min drive up the mountain from Shark Cove. It's surrounded by vegetation and peaceful and tranquil.
Some people on this site complained about the roosters, but honestly they're not a big deal. We all thought they were a delightful, authentic addition and we'll never hear a rooster crow again without thinking of beautiful Hawaii.
The owners live downstairs, with a separate entrance to the house. Christina, the owner, is prompt in responding to emails and her directions to the house were spot on. She popped in on the day we arrived. Other than that, you have no contact with them and they’re super quiet.
We felt completely safe at the house, sleeping with the sliding doors open (there are fly screens).
There's about a dozen food trucks in Pupukea (like an open air food court with REALLY good food and views). Highly recommended.
We cooked at home most nights. There's a supermarket opposite Shark Cove which stocks everything you need (fruit, veg, groceries, beer, wine, spirits, and for the vegans, tofu and tofurky sausages). Join up by filling in a form as it will make it much cheaper.
Pupukea is on the NW coast and in July the surf is calm and it's not windy or unpleasant (compared to how we found the NE side); that may be seasonal though as the waves get big in the winter.
You need a car.
THINGS TO DO
* Snorkel at Shark Cove
* Haleiwa: day trip, nice town, 15 min sth
* Best coffee: Coffee Gallery, North Shore Marketplace, Haleiwa (you're welcome)
* Waimea Falls: 5 min sth; gentle uphill walk through gardens, ending in a swimming hole & waterfall.
* Polynesian Cultural Center: on NW coast - a bit theme park-like, but good fun.
* Zip-lining: Climbworks (http://www.climbworks.com/keana_farms/), 10 min nth of the Polynesian Cultural Center. Worth every cent!
* Diamond Head: steep uphill climb, but worth the effort. Gorgeous views over Waikiki. Go early to avoid crowds. The parking lot is tiny so, depending on when you arrive, you may have to wait for someone to leave before you can park. We got there at 8.30am and waited about 15 mins; not a problem, just an alert.
* Dole Pineapple Plantation: kind of boring and touristy. The maze was fun but not life-changing and we didn’t do the train ride because the queue was mental. Good for kids though.
Christina Countryman's home on Pupukea Road is clean, spacious, well appointed, and away from the hustle and bustle of the homes that line the beach highway on the North Shore of O'ahu. She has spared no expense nor attention to detail in furnishing this lovely vacation home. Sitting on a plateau, above the Pupukea Beach area, it is peaceful and quiet, and yet, only 1.5 miles to the beach. Go one more mile south and you are at beautiful Waimea Bay and Valley. One mile north and you are at the beginning of the "Miracle Mile", North Shore's seven famous beaches where all the best surfing is had. The Foodland Market, also 1.5 miles away, has everything a gourmet chef might need, or any other level of culinary expertise, for that matter. Each room has its own full bathroom, and the master bath is a delightful getaway with its separate shower area and jacuzzi spa tub. The kitchen/dining/living area is open design with plenty of space to entertain. While we were there, we threw a surprise birthday party for my sister. Approximately twenty people attended and we could have easily accommodated 15 - 20 more. The deck/porch wraps all the way around the house with sliding door access to each bedroom and four additional sliders in the living area. Recreation is covered as Christina has stocked numerous snorkeling sets, blow-up rafts, tubes and floaties. I would have liked to see a horse shoe pit, but that is just a personal note. From the moment you arrive you realize you have stumbled onto something special, and vacation becomes a relaxing, unhurried, pleasure. Thanks for the wonderful experience, from one VRBO owner to another, "You did it right, Christina"! John Patrick party, 06/2016
really nice owners
lots of room
each bedroom has its own bathroom
lots of windows and sliding doors
5 min drive or less to sharks cove (too steep to walk)
best food trucks on the island just down the road!
lots of towels, snorkel gear, and beach chairs
gas bbq on the deck
they let us borrow their boogie boards and surf board (again, really nice people)
close to good surfing and snorkeling spots
doesn't feel private
not a lot to do
The roosters: I had read the reviews and knew there would be a rooster but thought there would be an obnoxious crow or two and then I could go back to sleep. But there are actually several roosters and a peacock that all live right outside the master bedroom windows. They all crowed simultaneously for a solid four hours starting at 3 am every day that we were there. After the first night I was googling how to get a refund and checking for other places to stay but we talked to Chris and she suggested ear plugs or shutting the windows. We shut all the windows the next night (not ideal because no AC but the fans did a decent job) and that was a lot better. I still woke up a few times in the early hours of each morning but was able to go back to sleep.
The owners live downstairs and although they were quiet and not at all intrusive, there was constant coming and going as well as construction, dogs, and occasional cigarette smoke. We didn't feel comfortable hanging out on the deck (there was a nice dining set and BBQ out there though) because it felt like we'd be sitting in someone else's yard and eavesdropping on their conversations. Overall it felt more like staying with someone than having your own place.
Entertainment: Since it's not on the beach and doesn't have a pool, it would have been great to have some things to do other than watch tv while we were at the house instead of having to go somewhere else all the time. Shuffleboard, ping pong, horse shoes, croquet, board games, a movie collection/ Netflix, etc. There was a scrabble board and 4 or 5 surf instruction videos but not much else.
I probably wouldn't stay there again because my preference is for a more private/quiet retreat. Mattress upgrades and entertainment options would give it more of a retreat/vacation feel too. But if you're looking for a big house with lots of room (we probably could have brought another family with us) that's close to the beach and for a good price, this could be a good choice.
Really enjoyed our stay. The great room (combined dining room, living room, and kitchen) is huge. The bedrooms are all nice and big. There is even a loft area that our older kids enjoyed. A couple of medium sized families could share this place and be comfortable. The kitchen and bathrooms are modern with quality finishes. The huge tub in the Master is a nice relaxing way to end the day.
There doesn't seem to be any heat or AC in the house, but there are lots of windows and fans. With a little practice we had no trouble finding a comfortable temperature. A couple of weird things: there are a zillion light switches and figuring them all out was a little challenging, and many of the doors and windows are difficult to lock due to a slightly poor fit in their frames. That said, we never felt unsafe.
Our biggest complaint was the roosters that live nearby. They were really loud in the middle of the night and very early in the morning. I woke up many times thinking a child was screaming. It was frustrating to be on vacation and not able to sleep soundly or sleep in. There's really nothing the owners can do about the neighbors roosters. Not their fault, but still kind of a drag.
There's a big beautiful lanai all the way around the house. It was great for grilling and watching a peek-a-boo view of the sunset. The owners live downstairs. They were very friendly and helpful. There was even a nice welcome basket with some treats.
The location near the Foodland is great for access to the North Shore and Haleiwa. We really enjoyed all the food trucks in Pupukea, which are practically around the corner from the house.
All in all, this place is a super value for your Hawaiian vacation.
