About this property

Come Ride The Chile Line In Our Cozy 1898 Narrow-Gauge Boxcar.

Our little oak boxcar was built in 1898, and it rode the narrow gauge rails from southern New Mexico trying to reach Denver. Purchased from the Alamosa yard and moved to Pilar, NM, near Taos, Stephen used it to design passive solar systems when not building homes in Santa Fe. It became our place for romantic rendezvous before we built our family home.

Today it is our guesthouse. During several stages of remodeling we have tried to keep an authentic narrow-gauge boxcar feel to the space. We have added a Yodel gas stove, a Pullman kitchen with dining nook and closet, and most recently a bathroom with a very boxcar-esque sliding door. Our family members vie for the space when they are in town, and you can see why. It is so welcoming, and unique even for unique Taos. It isn't hard to imagine you are traveling the world on the historic Chili Line, even though there is wifi, a flat-screen TV, state-of-the-art lounging chairs for reading or TV viewing. The boxcar is powered by solar electric.

For the weary traveler the queen bed is firm and comfortable. Bamboo rayon sheets add a touch of elegance to the boxcar charm. We use only nontoxic, 'green' household products throughout. The 40' flat screen TV can be viewed from the bed or the lounges. The couch is a 'Taos Bed', easily made up to sleep a third guest. The Pullman kitchen includes china and wine glasses, a two-burner electric stove, a small fridge, a sink and a toaster oven. Perhaps best of all, the 'slipper' tub invites leisurely baths or hand-held showers while viewing hundreds of acres of agricultural land, seasonally resplendent with coyotes, rabbits, soaring hawks, nesting magpies, and cows grazing and sometimes calving.

Our property has a hot tub shared with the owner's, adjacent to the owner's home, which sits in a secluded, outdoor space, allowing the contemplation of sunrise, bird flight, cloud shift, stars and moon. Don one of the boxcar bathrobes and your flip flops and take a dip.

Quiet, private and on a dead-end road, some call the boxcar a sanctuary. We are located in Ranchos de Taos, 3.5 miles from the Taos Plaza, and just 40 minutes from the Taos Ski Valley. Come experience a bit of old railroad lore while visiting our beloved Taos, New Mexico.

What an absolute Gem!!!
What a perfect getaway!!!! The boxcar itself is a delight and has been retrofitted perfectly to create the most charming space to relax and unwind. Literally every single special touch has been thought of and provided! It was everything I needed! From the thoughtful gesture of providing the type of milk I like in my tea, to the glorious soaker tub overlooking stunning views, to the homemade granola and locally sourced necessities, everything was a dream. The location is stunning and the hosts Jean and Steve were so thoughtful and kind. One of if not the best stays I’ve ever had and I will absolutely be back!!!!!

Great getaway in a historical boxcar
Jean and Steve are wonderful hosts and have done an excellent job refurbishing the boxcar and making it cozy and comfortable. All the amenities we needed were there and it’s an easy drive into town. Plus the views are amazing! We had a wonderful, relaxing stay and are already planning to go back.

A Relaxing Stay
The pastries and coffee were a great start in the mornings, followed by a relaxing soak in the clawfoot tub watching the horses play in the pasture and an occasional hot air balloon climbing and descending in the distance. Evenings were quiet and peaceful. All the essentials were provided and the hosts were very accommodating in making my stay enjoyable.

About the host

Hosted by Jean and Steve Kenin

Host profile image
I am Jean Kenin, a retired educator who gardens, sings, paints and hikes. My husband Steve is a building inspector, passive solar home builder and motorcycle rider. We met in Taos and have been married for almost 40 years. We have two fabulous sons, grown now, and a smart, well-trained and friendly Catahoula (dog). We love to travel- especially to beaches! We learned first-hand about owner rentals last year when we traveled to Turkey.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the views and wildness of this place so close to the center of town, and built our home in 1979. Our property overlooks hundreds acres of pastureland, with the Taos Mountains as back drop. Gazing out over the open Taos landscape friends often ask, how do you get anything done?

What makes this property unique

We moved the boxcar onto our property to have a guest dwelling separate from our home. It brings the lore of the narrow gauge railroad right to our doorstep. The boxcar is nestled next to my ever changing and challenging organic garden. It features the sweetest of well water to drink, a cozy bed nook at one end and the luxurious slipper bath at the other, with the kitchen/dining nook off to the side along the way. The space is quiet on our dead-end road, cool in the summer and cozy warm in the winter. The views from the dining nook and bathtub are of open spaces and big sky. This is the place to write your book, both secluded and stimulating.
Boxcar Rules:
We want you to feel at home during your stay, with these simple considerations:
• Please be respectful of the space. While quiet celebrations are encouraged, this is not a "party house".
• The boxcar is strictly a non-smoking space.
• As the boxcar is solar electric powered, please use energy-conserving practices.
• We request that guests be reasonably quiet after dark while outside the boxcar and in the hot tub.
• The hot tub is a guest privilege, and as such demands appropriate use. No drinking, eating or smoking in the hot tub, no excess body oils and creams, and please no love-making there!
• Unless otherwise arranged, guests should plan to arrive after 3 PM. Please call us with your estimated time of arrival so that we can plan to greet you.
• A quiet, well-behaved dog is welcome to accompany you; call Jean directly to discuss. $10/day fee is due upon arrival. Bring appropriate coverings to keep the furniture free of dog hair and dander. Dogs may not be left alone in the boxcar.
