Overlooking Its Own Orchard With Sweeping Coastline And Ocean Views

Bedrooms 1
Space 850 sq ft
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4 Air Conditioned By Our Trade Winds

The MacNut Farm House is located in the Lower Puna District the area most impacted by lava flows which began on May 3. Harry Kim, the Mayor of Hawaii, has ordered that all vacation rental activity be suspended in this area at least through July 31.

Though we know that the Farm House still stands, since mid-May it has been isolated by these new lava flows. We will therefore not be accepting any bookings until the county water supply and roads have been restored. This description will be renewed once the property becomes available and appropriate for use by old and new guests.

About Michael Graves

I live and work in San Francisco with my husband of 28 years, Don, who is retired. We both grew up on the East Coast (Maryland and New Jersey) but have been in California since the 70's. We are also both trained as psychologists but never spend time analyzing people when not at work! He has two children, four grand kids, and two great-grand children at last count. I guess that makes me a step-great grand dad. Yikes! We travel to Hawaii several times each year when other commitments permit.

Michael Graves purchased this farmhouse in 2005

Why Michael Graves chose Pahoa

Don had traveled to Puna for many years to conduct workshops at the Kalani Retreat Center. He was always charmed by the pristine nature of the area in contrast to resort settings so typical in much of Hawaii. Close friends also in love with Puna bought land in the Pohoiki area. We followed there lead and were lucky to find 6+ acres of abandoned macadamia nut orchard just across Pohoiki from them. Our first encampment was a nylon tarp, table and plastic chairs. After spending time on the undeveloped land we picked a site and drew up plans which were realized in the completion of our MacNut Farm House in 2007. The 'farm' has provided us with a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of life in San Francisco. We are excited by this opportunity to share life on the farm with those curious about a different experience of Hawaii.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The concept for the house was created by Don using some elements of our favorite condo on Maui. Both the living and bed rooms have sliding glass doors that open directly onto the expansive lanai with views of the orchard, coastline and ocean. A 'pocket' lanai permits passage from the bedroom to the bathroom or vice versa. In addition to the sliders there are eight other windows throughout the house offering views from almost every where you stand. These windows also allow us to manage the 'air conditioning' provided by the trade winds off the Pacific. Believe it or not in winter months they are often closed and we might even use the free standing gas stove to warm the place up!

The living areas are all on the second floor of the Farm House with the ground level used for parking, the utility room, and an outdoor shower. Two staircases provide access through the front door into the kitchen and to the lanai that runs across the orchard side of the house. There is also a cinder terrace which is a good spot from which to view the Milky Way visible on clear nights from the property. The ocean is also visible from throughout the orchard should you want to explore amongst the 500 macadamia nut trees.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful place to stay! The views were spectacular and the personal touches like fresh flowers were very welcoming. The house is the perfect size for a couple and sits on a secluded plot of land with beautiful landscaping. We woke up every morning with the amazing songs of jungle birds and the cool trade winds blowing in off the ocean. We ate every meal on the deck that looks east to the Pacific. Although we never really felt the need to leave the property, on Sundays there is a great farmer's market just outside of Pahoa town. Thanks and aloha to the hosts!

Best place we stayed on our three week Hawaiian vacation!

  • 5 of 5

The MacNut house was perfect for our honeymoon on the Big Island! This property may not be for everyone (i.e. you'd prefer a resort in Kohala) as it's a rural. But if you're looking for someplace quiet, beautiful, and romantic -- this is the place for you!

The house is perfect for a couple or small family. Clean, stylish, and has all the necessary amenities even though it's off-grid. The lanai (porch/deck) is great place to hang out rain or shine to relax, grill, read, or just enjoy the surroundings. The house faces east, so you get to wake up to the sunrise on clear days. Also, there were fresh flowers in every room when we arrived!

The property itself is absolutely gorgeous. Mat, the caretaker, told us that when the property was purchased it was abandoned and overgrown -- not anymore! If you visit, plan to spend at least a couple of hours wandering around checking out the various gardens, fruit trees and tropical plants! Be sure to keep an eye open for orchids and other flowers growing on the trees!

The only warning I might give, aside from it's somewhat remote location (although Pahoa and Hilo are not too far away) is that the living space is on the second floor, so it might not be great for someone who has trouble with stairs. But other than those two minor potential issues, this place is utterly fantastic!

If we're able to make our way back to the Big Island, we definitely hope to stay here again! We truly enjoyed our stay!

Owner's Response: We very much enjoyed having this couple celebrate their marriage at our place in Puna! They were great guests and enjoyed the house and grounds as well as fully explored the area on the East side of the Big Island. They are right that the MacNut Farm House is "off the beaten path" and appeals to guests looking for a different Hawaii experience. Given the rugged surroundings (and stairs) it is not suited for guest with mobility challenges.

Fantastic House - Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time staying at the MacNut Farm House. After multiple trips to the Big Island, this is our favorite place to be. For a couple, it is perfect size, and the huge covered lanai is the best part. The bedroom facing east allows the sun to wake you up in the morning. Yoga in the morning sun on the lanai is invigorating. Watching the rain flow through the macadamia tree orchard is peaceful. The house has absolutely everything needed for a lengthy stay. Since our last visit (18 months ago) we also noticed updates. Mat, the onsite caretaker, is professional, friendly, responsive and communicative. The owners are very responsive and a pleasure to communicate with.

Owner's Response: We were very pleased to have Marilyn and Ted return to the "farm" after their previous visit in 2016. It's very validating to have guests return as they are so many appealing choices on the Big Island and in Puna. I know they were looking forward to coming back and we are happy that their expectations were met. Also, it's nice to hear that some of the upgrades in the house and the orchard were noticed and appreciated. We will always welcome them back whenever time and opportunity intersect!

Loved the off the grid experience, the citrus fruit was amazing. Kitchen had plenty of utensils and appliances. The birds & other creatures provide the concert sound. Would return again!

Owner's Response: We very much enjoyed hosting Yvette and Mark during their time on the Big Island. Very happy that the citrus orchard was offering up lemons and limes for their enjoyment. It's always a treat when guests fully move in and make our place their own.

Awesome property and most adorable, pristine home! So many incredible plants to check out on the farm! Amazing view of the ocean with breathtaking sunrises! The home has all the amenities one needs and is super clean! Loved drinking tea in the rocker on the lanai! The caretaker is respectfully there when and if you need him, yet you feel totally secluded from all people, like ones own magical paradise! Can’t even say enough but a big mahalo and pure aloha!!!

The pictures of this home really cannot do it justice. My family of four have never enjoyed a rental on the big island more. It is a smaller home but that was great for my tight-knit group and the large lanai made it feel roomy. We prefer a non-touristy experience and so tend to stay on the East side of the island and this was perfect in location and set-up. I really can't say enough about how great this place was- the beautiful view cannot be surpassed, the caretaker was extremely attentive and helpful, it is well-built & extremely clean (which is a very big deal for me). It felt like home.

Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This house is great, and the lanai and grounds are absolutely lovely! We were staying for our honeymoon, and this house was a perfect place to relax, read a book, and enjoy each other’s company. The house is very spacious for a couple.

The house had everything we needed for a simple, and quiet getaway. The kitchen was well appointed for meal prep, and there were a number of cooking staples available. Our favorite part of the house was the lanai. There is a very sweet cat that hung out with us while we read.

We arrived late at night, and in the rain, but the provided directions made it very easy. The caretaker was very nice, and available when we had questions.

We enjoyed the area too. Downtown is small and easy to navigate. Close enough to Hilo for a night out. Lots of fun outdoor activities nearby too!

If we are ever back on the Big Island, I would definitely love to stay again!

Isaac Hale Beach Park & Boat Ramp
Car: necessary

The MacNut Farm House is 1 1/2 miles from Lava Tree Park where one can see how lava formed as it cooled. Driving down Pohoiki Road through one of the island's oldest Mango groves brings you to the Isaac Hale Beach Park and boat ramp. During lava flows, boat tours leave several times a day for a ride south to see lava meeting the Pacific. For the experienced, boogey boarding or surfing is popular. Or you can just cool off with a jump into the water off the ramp! A five minute drive north along the coastline brings you to the Ahalanui warm pond. There is easy staired access to the pond which is a blend of heated spring and ocean waters.

Making the one hour drive to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is well worth the time. Do plan to spend several hours as there is plenty to see on foot or while driving down Chain of Craters Road and around the Kilauea caldera.

The town of Pahoa, five miles from our location, offers its own rustic charms with several restaurants, two banks, used book store, sports bar, drug, hardware and grocery stores. Every Sunday there is also a farmer's market.

Puna has several such markets in locations no more than 15-20 minutes from the Farm House. If you want to sample to local fare along with Hawaiian music, a trip to Uncle Robert's on Wednesday evenings is a must!
