A wonderful family holiday - the best ever!!
We are an extended Australian family of 11 aging from 7 to 59 who decided to take the "holiday of a lifetime" in memory of our dear and much loved "Grandma Audrey" who passed away last year.
We had a wonderful holiday as guests in Alain and Marie's holiday home in Uzes which, over the course of our two week stay, became "our home" too.
It is ideally located, an easy 10 minute walk down rock-wall-lined streets to the old town centre of Uzes - an enchanting place of ancient buildings that give glimpses of lives long-gone but a culture that is still so treasured today by the French.
Every morning at 6am Uncle G ventured down to "La Nougatine Boulangerie" to get the most delicious, freshly baked croissants & bread which were gradually consumed over the next couple of hours as the "waves" of family members woke to face the day. Marie had kindly left us a jar of her home-made and delicious apricot jam which was exquisite and had pride of place on the breakfast table.
The grandkids (aged 7, 10 & 12) loved the pool - especially refreshing after a (compulsory - according to their mother) busy day of sightseeing.
It was a great base to visit tourist sites or just "chill out" - we did lots of both! Some of the highlights include: visiting the bi-weekly markets in the Place de Herbs; climbing the Castle tower; being fascinated by the array of medicinal plants in the Medieval Gardens; absorbing the history of the Museum; swimming and canoeing at the Pont de Arc and the Pont de Garde and, for the more healthy and motivated family members, climbing Mont Saint Victorie (Cezanne's mountain). NB: This Grandma passed up the climb offer and "volunteered" to stay home and "watch" the grandkids!! .
Alain and Marie were there to meet us when we arrived. The house was clean and well maintained. It is over three floors - some stairs but not too onerous. After a hip replacement I was able to get up and down with no problems. The house was spacious - plenty of room to get some "alone time". It was clean and well maintained and very, very relaxing.
Marie's kitchen was very well equipped - plenty of everything - just a delight! My son is a chef and he cooked up a storm. He especially loved the electric ovens.
Some things to note: the streets of old Uzes are narrow and can be tricky. There are stairs but they are doable.
Thank you for a holiday to remember! Merci Beaucoup! Chris
