Centrally located in a friendly neighborhood mid-way between Downtown Juneau and the Mendenhall Valley, it is convenience with a view at an affordable price. About Merigwen Kawakami

Merigwen was moved to Juneau from California by her parents at the age of 6. Upon seeing the then muddy streets of downtown, she was less than impressed and started to cry. Forty-three years later, she is still here...raising her three children with her Japanese husband, Tom and thanking her parents for the beautiful place she calls home.

Why Merigwen Kawakami chose Juneau

This area of Juneau receives great sunlight from morning to night. No matter where you want to go, you are nearly there. It's easy access to bike paths and the city bus line. Best of all, I love the view of the Chilkat mountains.

Clean and great location

  • 5 of 5

Great arrangement for a family with a 17-19-21 year olds. They had their own beds and bathroom upstairs and the parents had a room and bathroom on main level. Location worked well for us and our activities. The only time we ate there was to have a simple breakfast but you could cook or grill all your meals if you wanted.

Laundry room was very appreciated! Only request would be for more bed pillows, but the mattresses were comfortable. Loved having a key pad to use as not to worry about keeping track of a key. The mud room was terriffic as our days in Juneau were all rainy and we had a place to hang our rain gear and rubber boots. Would stay here again.

Perfect Place to Relax After Long Days Outdoors

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, our four kids (all 10 and under), and her parents stayed here during our recent 6 day trip to Juneau. This place was perfect for us. The two levels made it great for my wife's parents to stay on the lower level, while our family took the two rooms upstairs. We could all eat at the same time between the deck, bar seats, or dining table. The grill and kitchen allowed us to eat in almost exclusively, which saved us a ton of money. We really liked the "mud room" next to the entry way which allowed us to keep our dirty shoes out of the main area. The laundry room was also very convenient and came in handy since we engaged in several outdoor activities. The location was also ideal, a mile or two away from downtown Juneau but also just a few miles from Mendenhall and several other outdoor venues. Costco is 5 minutes away. We honestly couldn't have chosen a better location for our stay!

Perfect for our family of 6

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here the first week of July. It was clean and the kitchen was well stocked. I especially liked how Merigwen sent us email in advance telling us exactly how much laundry and dish soap, paper towels, etc would be there when we arrived, so we knew that we did not have to immediately go to the store.

She has obviously listened to previous reviews - the futon you see in the photos has been replaced with a more comfortable couch (which also pulls out into a bed). She has put things on the deck chairs so the legs do not get stuck in the deck cracks.

Not shown is the mud room entrance - which was a perfect spot to hang our wet hiking gear and take off our shoes and store them. The weather was good enough for us to eat out on the deck a few times. I highly recommend this property.

Stay in Juneau

  • 4 of 5

The house was very clean, convenient and easy to settle into. The view of mountains and water from the nice deck was lovely. The location of the house was accessible to all we did and the airport. The area was quiet and peaceful.

The house was well maintained, clean and perfect for a relaxing week with our family.

  • 5 of 5

The house was in a perfect location between the airport/Mendenhall Glacier and downtown Juneau. It was a very comfortable stay for six adults. It was easy to get to all the nearby attractions (hiking, Douglas, etc). The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed the view of the channel from the deck. It was nice to have a few staples in the home like dish soap, bath soap, and laundry detergent. We would definitely go back! Thanks :)

Perfect for our people!

  • 4 of 5

Our visit to Juneau was delightful. With five adults, the accommodations were perfect! The kitchen was well supplied and the overall space was great. It took a bit of time to figure out the heater...a minor issue. Only one issue we all were in agreement on was that the living/family room sofa was uncomfortable and kept sliding apart. Overall, on our trip to eight different towns on the Inside Passage, this property was at the top of our list.

Owner's Response: Thank you considering the house to be the best place of your stay while touring Alaska and for your feedback. If it happens to you it can happen to others. I'll see about posting instructions for the monitor heater. Sorry about the couch slipping. Perhaps it wasn't pushed back correctly. It is a simple but different kind of design. I'll make up instructions for it also. Alaska is a beautiful place, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and the view.
