Located in 'centre ville' of beautiful Narbonne, the ancient capital of Occitania (modern-day Provence, Languedoc, and Aquitaine), this apartment is appreciated by its guests, many of whom return year after year to take advantage of the 'sunny south' while enjoying all modern comforts. Only 20 minutes to the beautiful beaches of Gruissan and Narbonne Plage, as well as to various mythic Cathar castles, the city of Narbonne itself offers plenty of entertainment year-round. From its Michelin-starred restaurant to its genuine Italian pizzarias, and especially its renowned 'Halles' (covered market), open every day of the year, it's a gourmand's paradise!

Laura RHODES purchased this Apartment in 2005
Why Laura RHODES chose Cité
To tell you a little about ourselves, we are an American couple living in France since 2000. In 2004 my husband's mother died, leaving him a small inheritance, and he wanted to find us a "second residence" in France. I chose Narbonne simply by chance -- I had changed trains there twice en route to Barcelona -- and within two hours of arriving in the city we were shown this apartment. It was love at first sight! We signed for the apartment the next day, and took ownership in February 2005. We've been renting it to vacationers -- both short and long-term -- since the summer of 2006. In 2010-2011 we lived in the apartment ourselves for nine months, and for that reason especially it is extremely well equipped! (We installed the air conditioning then, too.)
What makes this Apartment unique
If you wish to spend your vacation in complete comfort (A/C and heating both work extremely well!), just a minute or two by foot from several good restaurants, cafés, bars, and historic monuments, you will be very happy in "La Brigade". Moreover, Narbonne is well situated to take off for one of the two beautiful Mediterranean beaches, bicycle along the canal, or to explore "Cathar country". The apartment is only 10-12 minutes by foot from the Gare (train station) de Narbonne, from where a short train ride will take you to Montpellier, Sète, Agde and Beziers to the North, Carcassonne and Toulouse to the West, and Perpignan and Collioure to the South. Now that the Spanish AVE trains are in service, it's even possible to do Barcelona as a day trip... although it's such a fabulous city that I would recommend spending two nights there minimum!

Classic French Apartment
Unbeatable location in the center of Narbonne. Literally 2-3 minute walk to all of the best places in Narbonne. Beautiful apartment in a classic French building. The apartment has everything you want or need. WiFi works great and French cable TV available along with a DVD player. The shower worked great - plenty of hot water and excellent water pressure. Having a washer and dryer in the apartment allowed us to pack lighter than usual since we could easily throw in a load of clothes before heading to Les Halles. We have a house we rent out via AirBnB so when we rent, we always try to leave the rental cleaner than when we arrived. The place was spotless when we got there and Laura (The hostess) even stocked the refrigerator with milk, water, butter, and yogurt when we arrived. That is a first for us anywhere we’ve stayed.
BTW - Laura was super. She not only provided a great rental, she helped us with a slew of advice and recommendations as we looked for an apartment to buy in Narbonne. She sent me information on real estate, notaries, HVAC installers, French wills (yes if you are an American buying property in France you need a French will), and even sent me links on YouTube for French language courses. We will stay here again when we come back to Narbonne.
you only get what you pay for !!!!
The wifi did not connect. The TV did not connect. Very noisy neighborhood.....all night long ! Toilet leaked intermittently. The owners would not respond to our emails and there was no emergency numbers for assistance
Dear Margaret Williamsen,
First, I'm extremely sorry that you and your husband did not enjoy your time at La Brigade. I have waited to respond until we were able to spend time in the apartment ourselves. Now that we have spent a week there, here is my response:
The timing of your stay turned out to be very unfortunate for three reasons:
(1) It coincided with the worst flooding that Aude has experienced in a long time -- it caused an enormous amount of damage, and several deaths! According to Orange, we lost our WiFi + TV service as a result of that disaster. It's since been restored, and the WiFi was working beautifully all last week, as it did for the previous tenants. I'm so sorry that you had to live without it.
(2) The pipe behind the toilet did apparently start to leak for the first time before or during your stay. I checked with the previous tenants, and they reported no leak. I had the outflow pipe replaced on Monday.
(3) We never heard any street noise during our stay this past week. However, the Rue Littré has occasionally been noisy in the past, and that's why we had central air conditioning installed (back in 2011), so that the windows can be closed, if need be. (Once closed, the problem goes away. One can also play one of the dozens of CDs we have available, to drown out any remaining noise.)
By the way, I never saw any emails from you after the first one, in which you stated that you had "arrived in [our] lovely home in Narbonne. What a delightful residence." Our phone numbers, however, should have been available through VRBO/HomeAway. Yet you make a good point, and I'll have them posted for future tenants.
Finally, our housekeeper reported that, after your stay, "l'appartement n'était pas propre comme avec les autres clients. Traces de graisse sur tout le plan de travail, lave vaisselle pas vidé, lit pas défait enfin pleins de détails qui vont me faire passer beaucoup plus de temps que d'habitude." I therefore had to pay her well over the cleaning deposit you paid in advance.
Nearly a perfect place
This cozy apartment is in a prime location short blocks from shops, sites, and restaurants of Narbonne - a lovely small prosperous city under the radar.
Laura could not have been a better hostess.
Something to consider for some is the loft bedroom, where the head height was just low enough to learn to duck if you are 6' or more.
A quintessential French apartment in the heart of Narbonne
Absolutely perfect spot in the heart of Narbonne. When you come through the gate into a courtyard you know you are in France. Beautifully appointed apartment, from the kitchen amenities, laundry facilities to the lovely decor and loft bedroom. The photos on the website do not do it full justice, it is even more attractive in person.
A short walk to most attractions, Les Halles, the Cathedral, the canal etc. Restaurants and Patisseries in every direction.
We immensely enjoyed our stay. It was a great location to go out on day cycling trips and evening walks exploring Narbonne itself.
We would stay here again in a heartbeat.
Thank you so much, Jay, for your kind words. It was a joy to have you and Sheilagh stay in La Brigade!
Wonderful apartment perfect situated in Narbonne
Clean, well kept apartment, everything available for a comfortable stay. Exceptionally helpful landlord, my son and I lived here for a longer period and had some more special needs, like printer or practical information of how to 'go about' living in Narbonne. We will be back!
Could not have been better!
In September 2018 my husband and I had a wonderful stay in La Brigade , which is in the heart of historic Narbonne. The apartment is nicely decorated and very well equipped.
It was a pleasure to make meals in the beautiful kitchen after shopping in the magnificent covered market (Les Halles) nearby. The lovely owners provided us a list of the best local places to eat, and were very responsive to all our questions.
The apartment could not be more central! Two minutes in one direction, and you are at the Cathedral St. Just, next to the town square. Two minutes in the other direction takes you to the Canal de la Robine, a tributary of the Canal du Midi, which flows through the heart of the city, and on whose banks are too many restaurants and bars to count. Another 2 to 3 minutes on foot and you'll be at Les Halles--one of the largest and best covered markets in France. Finally, 3 minutes in still another direction will take you to the Place de la Révolution/Léon Blum, with its park and restaurants.
If travelling by train, the Gare de Narbonne is so close (10-12 minutes by foot) that one never needs a taxi.
