Why Alan Weaver chose Hudson Valley

Stanley Bate bought this farm, in 1939, as a weekend home and a place to have a painting studio. In the 1950's, Stanley converted the barn into his painting studio and gallery and he lived here until 1972. Stanley was part of the thriving, post-war artist community in Columbia county. Columbia county continues to draw artists from around the world and weekenders from New York City with it's great, natural beauty, year-round outdoor activities and thriving communities, only 2 hours north of the City by train or car.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Consider this a chance to unplug and reconnect with nature. Cell phones and hot spots, depending on your provider, will work here, but take some time to do something other than staring at a 5x3 screen. There is a multitude of options-hiking, biking, a beautiful golf course, great food-or just relax and spend a quiet, or not-so-quiet!- weekend with family and friends.

Beautiful roomy house!

  • 4 of 5

The house is beautiful, very spacious and perfect for a group and provides a roomy feel while giving guests a sense of privacy. The kitchen and the bedrooms, especially those on the second floor are very large. The full bathrooms on the first floor provide options for those who may not be able to navigate the claw foot tubs in the second floor bathrooms. AC in the second floor bedrooms was a real plus during our August stay. The property is beautiful and provides a nice space for gathering and relaxing. Overall, this is a very nice property and I would recommend it to others.

ok

  • 3 of 5

the house was great everything went fine except only a little incident.

We brought extra guests and the owner of the house charged us we think unfairly too much and the worst thing we didn't get a receipt.

My sister in law wanted to surprise us and showed up for the 4th of July weekend and did't know that we had booked a vacation,so instead of cancelling (which was easy for us as we had purchased a cancellation policy)we decided to bring her and her daughter with us.

We had an air mattress and that was fine. The kids were having a great time when he shows up(while we were out only my niece was there) and told her we should all leave or pay double for the extra people.

That was OK with us we had to pay or leave ,but the way he delivered to us was really rude.

Anyway we paid and continued to enjoy the rest but I felt really hurt and my guests wanted to leave.

We had rented before and had extra people but nothing had happened.I rented the house ,what if I showed up less?would he return the money to us?

The day we left he was happy the way we left the house clean and everything in order.

I wanted to warn you about other guests because he mentioned that it had happened to him before ,so we think he was used to over charge for the house and make some extra money(altogether almost 22 hundred dollars).

All in all we had a great time and will book again but we have to be careful and read reviews carefully.

Thanks

Owner's Response: Mine is making a lot of this up, but what she says is very telling. Mine made a July 4th weekend reservation for 6 Adults and was very specific about who would be staying: "Guests 6 adults, 0 children/We are a family of six ,my husband and I and our four adult children". Mine obviously planned on having more than 6 family members, as she states, "we had an air mattress", but never mentioned additional people in any of the 3 emails, or numerous texts, prior to her arrival. Mine goes on to say that "we had rented before and had extra people but nothing had happened". Yes, probably because you hadn't been truthful with those home owners either! (NOTE to the VRBO organization this is obviously Mine's m. o.) The party arrived Friday night, not all at once, so I stopped by Saturday morning to see how things were going and the only person in the house introduced herself as Mine's niece, a grown woman who said that she lives in NYC. She said the house was great and everyone was having a good time. Since she had not been part of Mine's reservation and there had been 4 cars at the house Friday night, I asked how many people were staying for the weekend and she told me "12", not just a few "extra guests" as Mine states, but double the number that she had made a reservation for. I said this was a problem as I limit capacity of the house to 8 to avoid undue wear. I did offer them 2 choices: reduce the party to 8 or leave. Mine's niece went on to say that they were all Albanians and that Albanians were obsessively clean and that they would take good care of the property and it was her suggestion that that they should pay more money to cover the 6 additional people, an amount which was not "double" as Mine states. Mine says she was "OK" to leave and that "guests wanted to leave" but they didn't leave and it was their idea to stay and pay additional. I met with the entire family, 11 adults, 1 child, on Saturday afternoon, and met Mine for the first time, and there were no complaints or wishes to leave. If Mine feels "hurt" or that I was "rude" because she got caught in her lie, all I can say is; I don't know where you can book for 6 and show up with 12 and not think it's problem, but it isn't here. As I told Mine, I have had guests arrive with 1 or 2 additional people but never 6! The rates are clearly listed for parties of up to 8, and no one has ever been, as Mine puts it, "over charge"-not even Mine.

Wonderful cozy building and beautiful backyard. Owner very helpful. Our 3 families had more than enough room and really enjoyed the unique space and its beautiful surroundings.
