Ardèche gorges. The ensemble formed by the Pont d'Arc and the Gorges de l'Ardèche constitutes one of the most remarkable natural sites in France. The Ornate Cave of Pont-d'Arc, known as Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
Located in a limestone plateau crossed by the meanders of the Ardèche river, the cave contains the oldest paintings known to date (Aurignacian period: between 30,000 and 32,000 BC). J.-VS.). This exceptional cave, which bears witness to prehistoric art, was closed by a landslide about 20,000 years ago BP and remained sealed until it was rediscovered in 1994, which made it possible to preserve it in an exceptional way. Over 1,000 paintings, with anthropomorphic or animal motifs, have been inventoried on its walls. . One finds there in particular representations of dangerous species, difficult to observe for men of the time (mammoths, bears, cave lions, rhinoceros, bison, aurochs), more than 4,000 remains of Palaeolithic fauna and various footprints not human.
