About David Berg
4th generation Yooper with a love of the Hiawatha National Forest and the surrounding outdoors. I spend as much time possible exploring out my back door and find new and wonderful places every year. The Au Train River is one of the places we always take company for a relaxing paddle. It's a great summer tradition.
David Berg purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why David Berg chose Au Train
We chose to purchase a rental property in Au Train because it is centrally located to many excellent outdoor activities and provides a serene experience with a touch of the old resort area feel.
What makes this Cottage unique
The river is at your doorstep and Au Train Lake and Lake Superior are only a mile away. Lake Superior is not popular for swimming since it is so cold, but the beach in Au Train is a very popular swimming area. When my dad was a kid in the 1930's he would hitch rides with his friends, standing on the car's running boards, to get to this favorite beach. This area also provides great paddling opportunities in the bay, river, or dozens of nearby inland lakes. Of course the big draws are pictured rocks and grand island, but there are so many things to do in any direction. Great hiking and biking (Marquette and Munising have many miles of great mountain biking trails), boating, fishing, birding, sightseeing, and in the winter skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Never get tired of adventure here. On the other hand, it's also a great place to kick up your feet and relax.

Amazing cabin right on Au Train River
This is the fourth time we have stayed in this property - and we are already planning our next trip. It is an amazing cabin. The cabin has everything and more you could possibly need or want, including 2 super comfortable beds, washer/dryer, dishwasher, fridge, gas range, TV, franklin fireplace, etc. - plus the view is absolutely breathtaking. I highly recommend this property.
Cozy and beautiful!
My husband and I had a great week away enjoying the fall color in the UP. The cottage is super cozy and was a great size for the 2 of us. We loved the view of the river. We prepared most of our meals in the kitchen and would have cooked outside as well, but it was very rainy the week we were there. Neighbors are close but it doesn't feel crowded. Highly recommend if you like to get off the beaten path a bit and prefer the quiet.
Well located cabin to Pictured Rock Lakeshore
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the cabin! It’s well appointed and quaint. The location along the Au Train River is very pretty and we enjoyed kayaking while there. It is well located to Munising and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We hiked to rock formations and waterfalls multiple days we were there. Lake Superior is a site to see! The water is so clear....what a beautiful area! It is also not too far from Marquette with nice restaurants. It is close to the road. Traffic noise did not bother us but it might some guests. Just something to be aware of. Our thanks for a great stay. We enjoyed it!
Peaceful and Relaxing
My husband and I have stayed at this property twice now. We absolutely love it! The house is very clean and up to date. The AuTrain River is very peaceful and relaxing! The owner of the property is very friendly and responsive! Highly recommend!
Close to picture rocks.
The house was neat and clean and well equipped. We enjoyed kayaking on the river.
Clean cottage, all the amenities required, great location
The cottage is clean and while the decor is wilderness and rustic it does not have that old, used, dingy feel at all. Appliances are updated. I really like that the expectation is that you clean up after yourself and leave the cottage as you found it because they don’t charge a cleaning fee & you don’t have to worry about the laundry. Dave & Louisa are great! They are more than willing to share suggestions and tips but are in no way intrusive. The location is perfect! I loved being on the Au Train river. If you enjoy sitting on the dock, recreational fishing, kayaking, wading in the waters, and being near the water in general then it has everything you’d want. It’s only a mile from a great Lake Superior beach and 2 little convenience stores which are, well, convenient! Munising is about a 15 min. drive where you can pick up more substantial groceries, souvenirs, and the boat ride to Pictured Rocks. The price is more than reasonable and I feel you get more than you pay for.
Au Train is a great base camp for the many regional activities available to tourists.
