About Fred & Cheryl

Fred was born and raised in Croatia, Cheryl, in Iowa. They met at a university in S. California, where they both graduated with degrees in violin performance. Later Fred chose dentistry and graduated with his DDS.

Cheryl received her Master's Degree in violin performance from University of S. Calif in Los Angeles, and went on to perform and teach for 35 years. After practicing dentistry in Guam for 8 years and teaching on the faculty at his alma mater for 15 years, Fred (& Cheryl) chose to retire in the Black Hills of South Dakota, because of their wish to live in a quieter and more rural environment. They have never been disappointed with their decision, even though many of their family and friends wondered why they would ever want to 'move to South Dakota!!' As the years have passed, their family now understand why they were attracted to the Black Hills!! Fred and Cheryl designed a home with a vacation rental apartment, where they can host people from all over the world! They look forward to having you stay with them. They enjoy making their guests feel at home during their visit and they hope you will enjoy the Black Hills as much as they do!!

Fred & Cheryl purchased this apartment in 2014

Why Fred & Cheryl chose South Dakota

We chose this area for it beauty and tranquility, and yet its close proximity to small city life and to endless beautiful sights and scenic places to visit, which are still quite unspoiled from commercialism. It's a known fact that 'The Black Hills are the best kept secret in the Nation!'

What makes this apartment unique

This lovely apartment is the entire downstairs of our new home, same floor plan, built in 2014. Mt. Rushmore is 20 min. from your door (Visible from our deck!) --- close enough for convenience, and yet far enough to avoid the tourism rush. At this quiet location, you would never know that there are over 3 million visitors that visit Mt. Rushmore each year!! There are great restaurants throughout the Black Hills, and of course, plenty of good shopping and never-ending sights to visit. We are centrally located - less than an hour to most popular attractions in the Black Hills.

5-star accommodations close to area attractions

  • 5 of 5

If you are lucky to stay here, you will not be disappointed! A warm welcome from Fred and Cheryl will revive any tired travelers. Our family was greeted by both hosts and given warm freshly baked bread and butter from Fred, which was quickly devoured! We were impressed with the deluxe amenities available, fresh flowers, chocolates, sparkling juice, wi-fi, cable and a patio to enjoy any meal on. This apartment is close to all area attractions and only a 20min drive from Mt.Rushmore so you can go back and enjoy the evening program there~a must do! Our family of six stayed comfortably here!! Hope we can come back some day!

Relaxing and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time here while we visited the sites of the Black Hills (and even a day trip to Devil's Tower in WY!). It was clean, comfortable, and relaxing. We enjoyed dinners on the back patio and plenty of family time in the living area. The kitchen had everything we needed to make meals for our family. They even had a highchair & pack n play-which helped us save room packing! The homeowners, Fred & Cheryl, were kind, welcoming, helpful, and very hospitable. We had full days seeing the sites and it was nice to come back to this comfortable home at the end of the day. We saw plenty of deer on our drives around the house and the house was quiet even during Sturgis week. It was a great vacation.

4 night stay

  • 5 of 5

Great location, very secluded and quiet, and very clean and orderly. With our busy schedule in trying to see and do as much as we could do each day it was very relaxing to come back to this peaceful location to get a full nights rest. Fred & Cheryl are very gracious hostess and the needs of their guests is a top priority!

Owner's Response: It's good to know, from a guest's viewpoint, what they especially like about our location, the amenities they appreciate, how we're doing, etc. Larry is right, we DO make the needs of every guest our "Top Priority"!! If we're going to do this, we're "going to do it right"! Thank you for your affirmation, because we do work at it, to make your vacation special!

Fantastic Apartment for our Family Adventure!

  • 5 of 5

A perfect place for our family of five to stay during our Black Hills vacation. The apartment is spacious, immaculate, and supplied with everything you need & then some. Beautiful location that is close to all of the area attractions. It is also incredibly peaceful so a perfect retreat from long days of adventure. We enjoyed starting each day with coffee on the patio and using the grill to make our own dinners. So nice to avoid touristy dining. Our kids loved running around and seeing deer walk right up the driveway. Fred & Cheryl are wonderful hosts who made us feel welcomed and "appreciated" that little kids are not the quietest visitors. Terrific place, terrific hosts, and highly recommended!

Mt. Rushmore is sure to be one of the highlights of your Black Hills vacation. The monument is open year-around; the summer months feature a spectacular lighting ceremony nightly.

Crazy Horse monument is another famous monument dedicated to the rich Native American history that exists in this area.

If hiking is your passion, you'll want to hike Harney Peak, which is the highest mountain, traveling east, between the Rocky Mountains and the Swiss Alps!

Museums are numerous.

There are also many caves in the Hills which attract visitors from far and wide.

The famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (first week of August) draws thousands of bikers from all over the world.

Whatever your particular interests, there is something to satisfy every member of your party, whether it's hiking, boating, golfing, hunting, kayaking, swimming, caving, bicycling, rock climbing --- you may find it all in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Perhaps you would prefer just a quiet retreat from your hectic life. No problem! We're happy to say, the Black Hills enjoys a smaller population which allows visitors plenty of room to enjoy the sights and venues without overcrowding. One can usually find accommodations, even at the last minute (with maybe the exception of Sturgis Rally).

There are too numerous sights to mention each one, but when you arrive, we will supply you with plenty of information to help you plan your holiday in the Hills!
