About Sheila Marcus

We have been coming up north since my grandparents bought a home on a small lake near here 70 years ago. Some of my own fondest memories are of watching the stars, taking walks, kayaking the Crystal River, swimming, finding Petosky stones, skiing, eating ice cream and hiking the dunes. I hope that you and your family enjoy all that northern Michigan has to offer.

As a University of Michigan faculty member, active in children's health, I am also deeply committed to raising healthy and resilient children and supporting families. I bring this passion to both my work and my leisure.

I know how precious vacation time is with your family and friends. Savor the moment, these are truly some of life’s most special memories. Take pictures, take a walk, take moment to enjoy the breathtaking view from the deck and to just 'be” with your family and friends.

Beautiful, spacious, clean and well-decorated home on Lake Michigan

  • 5 of 5

Spacious, clean, and well-decorated home situated on Lake Michigan with access to Lake Leelanau as well. Beautiful scenic view overlooking the water. Great entertainment options and shopping locations within reasonable distance to explore. This was the perfect home to accommodate our multi-generational family reunion with its large gathering spaces and various bedroom layouts. I would recommend this home to everyone who is looking for a fantastic get away!

This is the 3rd year that we stayed at the Leland house.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoy the location and privacy of this house. The over all size and lay out are perfect for a generational family vacation. Due to storms prior to our arrival the beach area was less then optimal for use, which in past years was a great asset. The house, itself, gave us plenty of space for all to enjoy.

Overall, lovely, clean and accomodating

  • 4 of 5

Size and configuration is very comfortable

Bedrooms are nice and well equipped (not cheesy or musty as some places)

Overall cleanliness

great location nestled in back private road (access to town, Cathead Bay, Northport, Suttons Bay, etc.)

House starting to show some wear/tear (back patio, Refrigerator, grounds)...needs a little TLC.

Overgrowth in backyard pretty much blocks any sunset views from back patio

No real place to "sit" down at the beach (although this is a common issue many places due to high water level)

Picture of chair on dune overlooking lake is misleading...does not appear to be from this house.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Glenn and glad you enjoyed your stay! We will be re-doing the window wall to back deck to get easier access and likely power washing decking next year! We like the "peek-a-boo" view and also want to preserve all vegetation on the bluff for environmental reasons. The picture from the beach is indeed our property in 2014. Water levels do vary! Have a good rest of summer.

Beautiful view, charming town

  • 3 of 5

The house was beautiful and had an amazing view, perfect for sitting on the deck relaxing. However, if you have kids, that's not always what they want to do. The picture of the two chairs on the beach is NOT from the house, it is from the beach in town. The lake level was high this year, and there was no beach at the house. We had to put our chairs in the water. Also, having kids that wanted to explore, you have limited sight lines to sit and watch them. The amount of Petoskey stones was endless, and we had a lot of fun finding them.

The house does not have air, which made it unbearable a couple of nights, bringing a fan is a must because not all rooms had them. Having the windows open was nice for the natural breeze, but expect some little pesky bugs to find their way in.

Not sure if the description of the house changed yet, but we were told we had access to the lake across the street. Our group brought our own kayaks, brought them to the lake the first night, let the kids take a quick paddle, then were told that because of liability issues we couldn't use the kayaks or the lake across the street. Huge bummer, kayaking was something all of us were looking forward to.

Overall, our trip to Leland was five stars, we took advantage of everything this town/area had; shopping, wine tasting, sight seeing. This review is only on the house. I would not recommend this place if you have kids.

Owner's Response: We agree that Leland is a lovely town! We are glad that you enjoyed the stay in the area . The Adirondack chairs as the cover image is indeed taken from our beach in summer 2014. Lake levels were up the summer of 2016 and vary each season, but are down again in 2017. This traveler's use of the beach and dock of the neighbors as well as holding a wedding on the property resulted in several complaints by neighbors and damage to the property and furnishings including windows. Kayaks are not available on the property but kayaks are available for rent in nearby Leland and Suttons Bay, where they can be used in nearby lakes and the gorgeous Crystal River. There is a nearby public access to Lake Leelanau as well.

The property is secluded and inviting with plenty of outside room to enjoy for both kids and adults

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year of returning to Sugarbush Lane or as the kids call it " The Micigan House" The layout of the house is perfect for our 3 generations family. The kitchen is open to all three family spaces. The upstairs loft area is great for the kids to have their space.. The bedrooms are roomy. Air conditioning would be a plus. There are 4 bathrooms. The large mud room is a plus as well. The laundry room is quite ample. But this year the biggest plus was the private beach that is only 90 steps away and allowed for several sunset swims. A plus to that would be a fire pit on the beach

Owner's Response: Nancy, Thank you so much for returning for your family vacation! We are glad you had a good time. While this summer was hot and muggy, our boiler system does not allow for air conditioning in this home. Hopefully, next year will be less sticky. Also, we try to provide a natural up north experience but due to fire safety and environmental reasons we have chosen not to have a firepit. I hope this didnt prevent you all from complete enjoyment of your up morth experience. Thank you for returning to our home!

Breathe. Relax. You are now Up North.

Enjoy the beauty of the Leelanau Peninsula all four seasons with stunning views over Lake Michigan. In summer, travel by bike through lush cherry orchards and vineyards; walk the beach, swim and fish. In winter, cross-country ski and enjoy family time by the fire as you enjoy the early sunset over the lake.

Our home sits on a bluff above Lake Michigan, with stairs leading to a sandy beach. Its wooded lot provides plenty of privacy. The property is also within short walking distance to shared frontage on North Lake Leelanau.

An airy 5BR/4BA retreat, our home can easily accommodate a family or a group. It features three fireplaces, maple wood floors, large bay windows, a back deck overlooking the lake, and finishes and furniture featuring local craftsmen. The kitchen has granite counter tops, custom cherry cabinets, and a gas range. The master suite contains its own fireplace, library and a lake view. Lovely details include ash beams and paneling, and several skylights. The rooms provide some quiet spaces for those wishing to read or for business needs.

In addition to the main house, the property has a large detached garage.

We hope that you and your family enjoy all that northern Michigan has to offer. It is truly a special place! In an effort to give back to this wonderful community, yearly, we plan to donate 5% of all rental dollars to help support its farmlands and dunes, and Michigan families with medical and mental health issues. Your choice in renting this home will provide monetary support to the Leelanau Conservancy, and to high risk children and families served by the University of Michigan in outreach programs throughout the state. Thank you for selecting this home to both provide you with a wonderful vacation and to bring back to the communities of northern Michigan.
