Overview

About the property

Grand rear deck, great room, 4 Bedroom, 4 Bathroom, screened porch, stone pat

The barn is believed to date back to the Civil War. In 2014 it was renovated and named The Barn at Two Rivers.

Arriving guests park in the gravel parking areas that fits 5-6 cars. Across from which is the stone patio with furniture and cast iron bathtub fire pit complete with wood and fire starting material. The entrance to the barn is through the calm screened in porch. Upon entering the ground floor the great room welcomes guests with its open air plan. It still has the original hardwood floors, cathedral ceiling and living space beautifully appointed with Persian carpets and a gas fire place. The adjacent dining area is also beautifully appointed with a Persian carpet and a table which seats 12. Over looking this expanse is the fully equipped gourmet kitchen with silestone counter tops, a large island with seating for 6 on retro steel stools, refrigerator/freezer, gas range/stove, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, hot water kettle, Cuisinart mixer, and all the required culinary tools, serving utensils, flatware, dishes, glasses etc. Paper products are also provided.

The sleeping quarters include 4 bedrooms with their own private baths. There are two master suites one on the ground and the other on the first floor. In addition there are 2 air mattresses and 1 couch bed. Currently the barn can sleep 13 adults comfortably.

The great room opens through 2 sets of French doors onto the grand deck complete with comfortable patio furniture, a dining table, canopy, gas grill, and a 6 person hot tub with shower. Beyond the grand deck is the small brook and the walking labyrinth or meditation mandala. Finally the barn has central heat and air as well as a washer and dryer.

The barn is ideal for family and friends wanting to spend quality time with one another to celebrate or simply relax. The barn is also perfect for small conferences, educational, health and spiritual retreats.

For larger groups, additional lodging is available at a small motel just minutes away.

Nearby attractions include Harper’s Ferry, nestled between the confluences of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, and the site of John Brown’s raid which began the American Civil War. Civil War enthusiasts are attracted to the battlefields that dot the surrounding countryside. The Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers draw many white water rafters, kayakers, canoers, and campers. The C&O Canal and The Appalachian Trail are also located here and attract mountain bikers, hikers, campers, bird watchers and fishing enthusiast young and old from around the world.

A short drive from the barn takes guests to Charlestown Hollywood Casino and horse track in Charlestown, WVA. Nearby is also Shepherdstown University in charming Shepherdstown, WVA. Just minutes from the barn is Crystal Grottoes Caverns in Boonsboro, MD and The Brunswick Heritage Museum in Brunswick, MD. And my favorite is the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, MD.

About Ali Safayan

I have lifestyle medical practice in NW Washington, DC. My dear friend Gaby owned the barn and I enjoyed many delicious dinners, delightful getaways and spiritual retreats at the barn prior to her untimely death in May 2011 at the age of 50. I purchased and renovated the barn in Gaby's memory, and honor her legacy by continuing to provide the barn as a destination where family and friends can gather for special occasions. The barn is also a unique backdrop for educational, health and spiritual retreats.

As a physician one of my many concerns is our reliance on the grid and the damage it is clearing doing to our society. It is for this reason that I DO NOT provide internet, WiFi, cable, TV, radio or anything else which maintains our connection to the grid. The ultimate purpose of the barn is to provide a grid free environment where people can directly reconnect through verbal and visual communication to one another, without electronic interference and misunderstanding.

Ali Safayan purchased this barn in 2012

Why Ali Safayan chose Knoxville

There are many wonderful properties from which guests can choose but few can match the barn's energy. The barn is a perfect balance of vintage charm and modern convenience. It is easily accessible, located in a private natural setting. It is beautifully appointed, spacious, relaxed, calm, quiet, and clean. When you add the comfortable grand deck, hot tub, infrared sauna and fire pit, guest have little preventing them from creating memories that last a lifetime.

What makes this barn unique

The barn is centered perfectly among the areas abundant out door activities, historic sites, and points of interest. It is an ideal destination for those wanting to escape the daily pressures of modern life and get off the grid. To that end I DO NOT provide internet, WiFi, cable, TV, radio etc. If these are modern convenience you or your group requires PLEASE DO NOT RENT THE BARN.

Ideal Place for a Family Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Nine family members stayed at The Barn for a family wedding in Purcellville, VA. It was a perfect relaxing and open place for us to unwind between events. It is also spacious enough for everyone to feel like they have there own space. The kitchen is well equipped, and we really enjoyed the chance to congregate and talk in the mornings. I thought the “no wifi” would be an issue with the kids, but we played cards and Monopoly and actually talked to each other. Imagine that. I asked my 13 year old nephew what he thought about The Barn, and he said “it’s perfect. I just really like the feel of it”.

We hope to come back next fall with friends to see the leaves and visit Harpers Ferry. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Easily the nicest large property listed in this area. The barn was perfect for our group of 10.

  • 5 of 5

Like a couple previous reviews, our group was a little concerned about what felt like a lot of rules. These rules ultimately had zero impact on our trip—easy to follow upon arrival! The property was great overall and for a group of 10 the barn was exactly what we needed: large open kitchen for cooking, large back patio with grill, outdoor space in the front and back of the barn, and a large open living room area. We had been to this area before and found this property to be both conviently located to local activities and an easy drive. When all together at the barn, the property had more than enough room for 10 of us to hang out together while also providing individual space for people to do their own things as needed. Our group could not have been more pleased with our experience. Would absolutely come back!

WONDERFUL!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful celebration for my parents 60th wedding anniversary at the barn. We needed a location that had everything my parents needed on the first floor. At the barn they had a bedroom and full bathroom, plus they could join the rest of the family in the kitchen, family room, porch and screen room. It was ideal. The barn had everything we needed. We also had great adventures tubing on the Shenandoah and hiking at Harpers Ferry. We knew well in advance that the barn did not have tv's or wifi and found it relaxing to be unplugged during our stay. We brought games and puzzles, and enjoyed relaxing together! I'd highly recommend the barn for a family get away!!!

Memorable

  • 5 of 5

We recently rented the Barn for a 9 person celebration weekend. The Barn was everything we hoped it would be. There was a huge amount of open space for the gathered moments inside and out on the deck. The unique space was the "Wow" factor I wanted and will certainly ensure that we never forget our weekend. I would highly recommend the Barn for anyone looking for a unique and memorable getaway.

Decent house but furnishings must be upgraded to warrant $700 per night

  • 2 of 5

We stayed with our family for a weekend and I would not return to this rental or recommend this rental based on what we found when we got there. For the amount we paid for this rental, we expected decent furnishings and not dated, rickety furniture, some chairs were not safe to sit in, one of the couches is more a less an uncomfortable park bench, the 3rd floor bed slats fell off the bed, all of these problems are simply unacceptable for an expensive rental. Additionally, we expect wifi, tvs, etc. We did not realize these normally included items for ANY rental in the year 2018 were not included; the ad for the house is misleading. While it is great to get away and unplug, not everyone wants the same experience. Why not include wifi and tvs and if you don't want to use them, then DON'T, don't make a decision for all your guests. There was a mouse that visited the kitchen in plain view each night, luckily that did not freak out any of our group, but there is old food in the pantry and dirty areas of the kitchen that creates a perfect place for mice to call home. The signs posted all over the house are tacky and unnecessary, again this is not a rental that could possibly leave anyone impressed.

There are currently 27 reviews with an average of 5 stars which is why we booked this rental. I can only assume that not all reviews are being posted, this house in not remotely close to a 5 star experience.

Owner's Response: I’m sorry to hear Mr Fratus did not enjoy his stay at the barn. As clearly stated in our advertising the barn is over 100 yrs old and has been renovated. The rental agreement, which must be signed in order to rent the barn, clearly states in section 13 that there is no WiFi, TV, radio or any other electronic system. The property allows guests to completely disconnect from the hectic day-to-day experience. To completely disconnect. This is what our returning guests love about the barn. We are sorry to hear that your expectations were not met. The barn rules clearly request our guests to remove all food items when they leave. Our cleaning staff always removes any left over food items. I’m sorry to hear something was left in the pantry. I will make sure this doesn’t happen again. That said, it nearly impossible to rid a 100 year old barn of every mouse. Although Mr Fratus found the signs to be tacky, unfortunately they have become necessary as the septic system has been damaged by inappropriate material being flushed down the toilet and carpets being damaged from mud and other material being carried in on shoes from the outside. In addition, other signs are posted for our guests’ safety as there are two areas of the barn that still under renovation. As for the furnishings, the 3rd floor bed slats have been repaired and all the other beds in the barn have been inspected. In reference to the uncomfortable bench couch, which is part of a modern Italian set, there is a more conventional modular couch system that can fit 6-7 people. Hence there is ample space for everyone to relax. I’m not sure which chairs Mr Fratus found to be rickety, but all the chairs will be examind as well. Lastly, I want to thank Mr Fratus for his comments.

Beautiful barn for big groups close to Harper's Ferry!

  • 5 of 5

As a group of 12, we found the barn to be spacious and impressive. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend and loved that it was only 1.5 hours from DC. Ali was a fantastic host and we definitely plan on returning to unplug from city life!
