Love the Sugar Shack!

  • 5 of 5

I always struggle to write a great review because lets face it, if it gets too popular, it gets difficult to book and we want this house available to us when we go want to get away LOL. I stumbled on this property in July of 2016. We loved it enough that we booked again in Sept of 2017. Julie is great to work with. The house is amazing if you want privacy. Sitting on it's own in the marsh, with private gated drive and phenomenal view of the Bay. The deck, the enclosed porch with Amazing new windows that allow you to let the breeze in, is my absolute favorite area of the house. 90% of my time was spent on that porch just watching the birds, the bay and the weather. The house is clean, has a great layout, nice appliances and washer and dryer. The bed linens are nice, towels, beach towels, kitchen towels are provided as well as dishes. There is a Keurig, HUGE bonus as I don't have to haul mine when we go! We spent our time crabbing on the dock, which has been repaired and is fully functional (this is not unusual in tidal waters to have constant upkeep on docks, ramps, we understand this and were thankful it was repaired for our stay)....and has a ramp to access thru the marshy walk. Yes you have to walk thru the marshy muck to get to the dock, but we just bring our rubber boots. We caught tons of crabs for 2 meals. On this stay, Hurricane Jose was passing offshore, and we were fortunate to have some pretty high tides, which did come up to the deck of the house, but we ENJOYED that! It's part of being on a marsh and we felt like we were on our own island at times! The dog enjoyed swimming in the high tide waters too! The house was clean, and I have to say, while you do sit on marshy waters, we have NEVER experienced any kind of odors or smells at the house. Salt marshes can have a smell, but that to us is not offensive, we smell that salty marshy smell when we get close to the Jersey Shore. No odors permeated this house at all. We also did not have any bugs bothering us at night outside. We love this house and plan to return year after year if we can. Highly recommended and Julie again, is extremely helpful! Thanks so much Julie for allowing us to rent your home again!

Owner's Response: Deborah thank you very much for the great review!! You got to experience the beautiful weather of September and the fury of mother nature during hurricane Jose. We are so happy you are able to enjoy our little piece of the marsh as much as our family has for generations. Hope to see you in 2018!

Enjoyable, relaxing and beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

It all starts when the private gate opens up to a panoramic view of the house and bay. We had a great time! So relaxing and beautiful. We spent most of our time in the screened in porch area. When it rained for two days, we adjusted the windows so we can still enjoy it without worries. The cottage has everything needed for a comfortable stay. The simple one floor living is so nice and comfy. We only ventured to the dock a couple of times. It's a mucky walk. We left the dock to the wildlife and cormorants doing their Karate Kid poses. If you are a bird lover, you will go bananas! Download a birding app. So much wildlife to see and experience. Deer, foxes, rabbits and a ton of birds. The best part of this vacation is having our dog be part of the fun. He had the best time ever! No leash, a billion rabbits, scary dead horseshoe crabs and waves that matched his energy level. It's doggy nirvana! There's something for everyone at Sugar Shack. What a special time for us!

Peace & Quiet

  • 5 of 5

This is a fabulous place if you are looking for a quiet, nature-based environment and want the best bay waterfront in Rehoboth. Being avid kayakers, we loved exploring the area and saw a variety of water birds. I would recommend bringing water shoes if you want to walk along the shoreline area. This is a beautiful, cozy, beach house, and we spent most of our time on that big fabulous porch; also the versatile windows on the porch enabled us to adjust how much breeze we wanted. It is a lovely place, and hope to come back again next year.

Misleading VRBO Advertisement of Property Description

  • 1 of 5

This July 2017 waterfront rental with private crabbing pier/boat dock was a nightmare! The ADVERTISED private crabbing pier/boat dock was dangerous and could not be used. We first spoke with Julie in November 2016 and reserved the property after confirming with her the use of the dock for our boat. Two days before check-in, we texted Julie regarding the tides for docking our boat. She promptly replied and said the dock and water levels were fine for our boat. On check-in date after 2 pm, she informed us that the ramp to the dock washed away, but we could still use the dock to tie the boat. Our vacation was committed, the car/boat packed, and our family flying in from out-of-state to join us. Not only was the dock missing the ramp, but the entire dock was missing boards rendering it completely useless. After climbing off the boat and wading through the water, seaweed wrapped around our legs and our feet sank in the soft mud. During our stay, we regularly smelled strong pungent marsh and other nasty odors in and around the house. The outside trash can, which was full when we arrived, was never emptied during our stay. The old gas grill died, the sliding glass door came off its track, and the hot water heater stopped working (the maintenance man replaced the grill, put the door back on its track and fixed the hot water heater). An evening power outage caused the electric entrance gate to stop working - preventing us from returning to the property, and leaving us in the dark for several hours. Julie came over at 10:30pm to let us in - at which point, we discussed the misrepresentation of the dock - which was the primary reason we rented this property - and the other issues. She then offered us a full refund. We offered to split the rent and refund half. Julie also said that she would remove the boat dock from her VRBO ad. After contacting her later, she decided not to honor our discussion and only refunded the full security deposit and another small dollar amount, which we rejected. The view of the bay was awesome and the house interior was nicely furnished for 2 to 3 people, but the strong odors permeate the house, porch and sundeck and the dock/crabbing pier is dangerous. I do not recommend this property.

Owner's Response: We feel that this review is very false and misleading as we have records of all of our correspondence. However, we are taking the high road and not going to comment on them. Please read the rest of our reviews from our many other satisfied guests for a much better picture of who we are and what our house has to offer. Thanks, Julie

Relaxing and Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

The Sugar Shack allows one to really decompress and relax. There are no close neighbors so one can enjoy watching the bay, enjoy the breeze, read, sun or just do nothing.

There are several grocery stores within 4 or so miles to stock up on groceries, etc. I do not recommend going to the Walmart if you can help it because it is just insane and does not have a full grocery section like many do.

I definitely recommend the Sugar Shack if you desire just being able to relax and not have to deal with lots of people.

Privacy that's close to everything!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the feel of being at home. Sitting on the screened porch, playing board games, looking out on the water, watching the wildlife. The beach, shopping, and boardwalk just a short drive a way. Julie was very responsive to our questions. Great vacation getaway!
