About the property

Studio, 1 bathroom, with peaceful yard.

Our sweet backyard cottage is nestled among the fruit and flower trees of the yard. It is easily within walking distance to the grocery store, coffee, shopping, restaurants, post office, and local arch park events. It is at the north entrance to Yellowstone Park, as is all of Gardiner. The cottage is in the heart of town and also shielded from the main street by the owners' home. The yard is shared with the owners but privacy is afforded by the trees. The owners' home was built in 1930 and its cottage was built in the 1940s by former owners, the Eastons. It is believed that their intent was to rent the cottage to visitors of Yellowstone, making it a very early vacation rental in this town. The cottage is a perfect fit for two people who want to day trip to northern Yellowstone, book local activities like rafting, biking, horseback riding, and return to a simple, basic, clean environment to relax. Our guests note that the well cultivated green and floral landscaping add to the charm and character of their experience. The stucco cottage still has the details of its early history with the old style door knobs and kitchen cabinets. There is a comfortable queen bed, sitting area with DVD player & movies (no television service), eating area, full but small kitchen, and full bathroom. It is clean, well cared for, and you are welcome!

About Eleanor Stone

Tom and Eleanor Stone came to Yellowstone Park in the late 70s and early 80s, met and were married here. They worked in the interior of the Park for a number of years and then settled in Gardiner in 1989. They raised their two daughters in Gardiner. Outside of work Tom enjoys gardening, fly fishing, reading, and traveling when able. When not working, Eleanor's life revolves around family, friends, and food and she's been active in the community. They have been hosting family and friends in the Lilac Cottage for years and are happy to open it to newcomers and folks who want to enjoy the area.

Eleanor Stone purchased this cottage in 1995

What makes this cottage unique

We love our home and cottage because of its location. It is handy to go out the door to run errands or explore, and yet this downtown property has a surprising ability to tuck you away. We love the old fashioned comfort of this historic property.

We purposely keep the nightly rate of Lilac Cottage reasonable for this area. The reason is that we think that the additional 10% taxes (7% state and 3% local) plus the $40 cleaning fee and now the new VRBO Service Fee add enough to your charges! We are making our rate fair in comparison to vacation rentals in the area and even Gardiner motels.

Perfect cottage

  • 5 of 5

The first amazing thing of the Lilac Cottage is the smell of lilacs as you walk up to the front door. The cottage was very clean with everything we needed for our stay. Our hosts were fabulous! Even offering us their binoculars and bear spray for our trip into Yellowstone. Gardiner is a great little town with several restaurants to choose from. The grocery store in town was perfect to get items for us to make dinner in the cottage as well. If we ever get the pleasure of going back to Yellowstone we will definitely be staying at the Lilac Cottage.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words and we're so glad you enjoyed the Lilac Cottage, Gardiner, and Yellowstone! Whether or not our guests see or meet us, we like to offer resources to make the most of their time in the Park. The website links we provide in advance, the Cottage and town information in the Hospitality App from Homeway/VRBO, and a well stocked Cottage can all help. Hope you can return! (I think May is the best time for that Lilac scent!)

Perfect home away from home.

We loved Lilac Cottage. The location is perfect! So close to Yellowstone. The owners provided everything we might need except food. It is private and cozy. Owners are close and available if needed. Quiet and relaxing.

Perfectly Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin!! The Lilac Cottage couldn't have been more ideal, more comfortable, more clean, more provisioned....!!! From the moment we were greeted with fresh cut flowers on the dining table, to the Haagen Dazs ice cream in the freezer, to the myriad of books, maps newsletters, etc. highlighting and detailing Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding area, our stay was perfectly wonderful. The Lilac Cottage is a stone's throw from the North Gate of Yellowstone and within walking distance of nearly everything in town, including the many other activities the Gardiner area has to offer.

And the owners could not have been nicer or more accommodating, making sure we had all that we needed, yet so polite and respectful of our privacy.

We even got meet one of the neighbors who was witty and informative as well. Such a friendly town!! In fact, one morning as I was enjoying my coffee, I looked out of the kitchen window to spy a couple of elk "visiting" across the street. Made my day!

In a heartbeat, I would stay here again and again and again!!! :)

Owner's Response: That is exactly what we are aiming for and we are so happy to have made it a positive experience. I'm sorry I only got to speak with your husband a few short times and missed you; but my husband and daughter enjoyed their chat one evening with you both. We have fun preparing the Cottage for each guest and if you later think of anything we could improve, just write to me. Hope you can return.

Great little cottage, owners very nice

  • 4 of 5

The lilac cottage worked out very well for our stay in the Yellowstone area. It was more relaxing than a motel, but a working TV with stations would have been nice. The TV was only useable for watching DVD's. Eleanor and Tom were very nice, very accommodating and pleasant. All the amenities we needed were there, and then some. The place was very homey. I would suggest that the oversized chair in the living room area be a little more comfortable. You really can't sit in it very long because there is no support in the front of the lower cushion. Even though that chair does provide a fold out extra bed, which would come in handy. But it was a pleasant place to stay if you are wanting to go and come from Yellowstone. There were some nice restaurants in the area to eat at as well.

Owner's Response: We were happy to have you in the cottage! We do try to go beyond the basic amenities, anticipating what folks will appreciate and we're happy that you noticed. All guests are encouraged by us in advance to read our VRBO page all the way through and to download the VRBO/Homeaway hospitality app which includes all information about the cottage and the town so there are no surprises and visitors can plan well.

Little cosy cottage was just what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

Tucked away with a lovely shady garden, this well equipped cottage was just what we wanted on our road trip - a welcome break from hotels and motels. Eleanor and Tom made us very welcome yet left us to do our own thing. Perfect.

Cozy, Private and Serene

  • 5 of 5

A big thank you to Eleanor and Tom for our wonderful stay at the Lilac Cottage. What a perfect place to get way from the crowds at Yellowstone! Our host were extremely helpful from providing bear spray to food and activity recommendations. The location is very convenient to get into the park and walkable to any part of Gardiner after long days in the car. If I were to ever return to Yellowstone this is where I would like to stay again! Thanks again for a lovely stay!
