Fresh paint, damp

  • 3 of 5

Moisture in room high! Felt like everything always wet. That being said, Terry very nice guy. Good host, very accommodating. Shower little scary thought something gonna fall thru ceiling. I know I was first of season so pretty stinky but frebreeze took care of. Everything you could need was there, just nowhere to use any of it. No counter at all, no table space. It fit my needs perfectly since I didn't need any of it, ate out and family local. Would come again.

No frills but great for what your paying for.

  • 4 of 5

My husband, our dog (large 115 pounds) and I spent a week in room A with the attached kitchen. The rooms are nothing fancy but are clean and decorated nicely. We had enough room for us all not to feel cramped in on top of each other. It was also nice having a kitchen and being able to cook or eat when we wanted to. The location is close enough to walk or bike into Saugatuck and Douglas. We brought our bikes up so we biked all over the two towns and to the beach. We enjoyed our stay at Shulls and for the price of the rooms it was great!

Not Fancy, but Clean & Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I stayed in room C for one week with my two dogs while visiting family in Jenison. The motel is 3/4 miles from Interstate 196 and a couple miles to Hwy 31, making travel to Grand Rapids and any of the lake shore cities (e.g. Holland, Grand Haven, Muskegon) quick and easy. The neighborhood feels safe. You do hear some traffic noise, but not enough to keep me awake. The room is small and nothing fancy, but it is clean and comfortable and includes everything you really need. Although I am used to sleeping in a sleep number bed, I thought the bed was extremely comfortable. There is also a table and 2 chairs, and a soft chair, which I never even sat in because it was easier for the dogs to sit with me on the bed. The kitchen includes a microwave, refrigerator, and enough dishes, glasses, and silverware for 4. I did not use them, but there was also a coffee maker, toaster oven, hot plate and sauce pan. Some people complained that the shower was small, but I didn't think so. The shower head is a little low for tall people, but since it can be hand held, that wasn't a problem. My only problem with the shower was that the only place to set anything was a soap holder. Guests should be aware that the room does not include a phone or alarm clock. This was not a problem for me; I used my Sprint cell phone for both. It does include internet access and TV service, both of which worked well. The room was an exceptionally good value. So glad I found it. I will definitely be back.

My new go-to place to stay in Saugatuk

  • 5 of 5

I am so glad I found this place. Not just for the incredible bargain on the rate, but for the overall experience. It was clean, quiet, convenient and updated. Terry, the owner, is a pleasure to deal with and totally accommodating. Here's a few of the details - First, the photo of the front of the motel is not updated. They have updated the façade and it's cute, modern and contemporary like the inside. We stayed in Room D. The shower is NOT small. It's normal size and has a convenient detachable wand type shower head. It felt great after a day of hiking or kayaking or bike riding, etc. Free Wi-Fi was a bonus and no problems with connectivity or speed. The bed was comfortable, the pillows were both soft and firm and the linens were just right. The kitchen was stocked with plenty of glasses, plates and silverware. There were even some misc stuff left behind from previous tenants, which was convenient (like paper bags and plastic to-go containers). There's a microwave and coffee maker. There's a hot plate and toaster oven below the sink that you can place on the table to use. There's a frig that has a good size freezer section that holds a bag of ice. The A/C blew cold (it was very hot during our trip) and though we didn't use the TV, Terry informed us there was cable. The motel was located just outside of the downtown area with the bike trail starting right from the parking lot. Down the street is the Southerner restaurant with water views and sensational food, especially breakfast. There wasn't anything we were lacking and other than driving to the Saugatuk Dunes State Park, we used our bikes as transportation the whole time. I will definitely be recommending this motel to my friends and look forward to another stay later this fall.
